  2. MY DASTAR, MY CROWN

    My Dastar, My Crown,

I wear it without a frown.

For you see it is a gift from my father,

To keep my precious hair together.

Not just a piece of cloth,

But a fabric that I fold and mold,

Lovingly around my hair each morn.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji, my father, gave me this crown,

So I can stand out in a crowd,

With a powerful smile showing I’m proud.

  4. The Guru set out from Kiratpur. On his way he waited for some Sikhs who had come to Kiratpur after his departure. Among them were the maimed and the leprous, all of whom he cured by the imposition of his hands. At Panjokhra, a village near Ambala, came a proud learned Brahman, who without even saluting the Guru, sat down in is presence. He then said," Thou who callest thyself Sri Har Kishen, must be greater than Lord Krishna. Translate the Gita for me." At that time, there stood nearby a dumb and illiterate man, Chhaju who hailed from the same village as the Brahman. Chhaju was serving water in the kitchen of the Guru where he had encamped. The Guru asked the Brahman whether he should translate Gita himself or he should get it done from Chhaju. The Brahman thought, Chhaju who could not even talk, how could he translate it? So he replied after a little pause, that Chhaju should do it. The Guru was always carrying a stick with him. He called Chhaju, put his stick on his head and asked him to answer the Brahman's questions. To the utter amazement of the Brahman, Chhaju explained in detail each and every verse that the Brahman asked. Upon this the Brahman fell on the lotus feet of the Guru and apologized for his indiscreet behavior.

  7. Wings Of a Butterfly

    ********************

In ten directions, clouds cover the sky like a canopy.

    Through the dark clouds

lightning flashes and I am terrified.

My bed is empty and my eyes are sleepless.

My Lover has gone far away to distant lands.

O mother, I have received no messages.

When my Beloved used to go out, even if nearby,

word would be sent to me.

How could I forget my dear Beloved,

the Giver of peace and all virtues?

Climbing onto the roof, searching for my Lover,

my eyes are full of tears.

The wall of self-centredness and pride separates us,

But now I can hear my Lover nearby.

There is a veil between us,

like the wings of a butterfly.

Without being able to focus properly,

    my Lover seems far away.

    My Lord has become merciful.

    My sorrow has been dispelled.

Says Nanak, when Overflowing Grace burst down

    the dam of self-centredness,

I found my Lord truly merciful.

O mother! All of my fears have now gone.

Whatever I seek the Guru leads me to find.

    The One, my Sovereign,

is the treasure of all virtues.
