  1. These padas by Shankarcharya are very similar to Bullah's 'bullah ki jana main kaun'. Is it possible that Bullah got inspired from these sanskrit padas and wrote sufi version in punjabi?

I am not mind, wisdom, pride, and heart. Neither I am ear and tongue nor I am nose and eyes. Neither I am sky or earth nor I am power or wind. I am the eternal happiness or bliss state, I am Shiv, I am Shiv.||1||

I am not the state of being alive or the five type of Vayu. Neither I am the seven elements constituting the body (Dhatu) nor I am the five sheaths which invest the soul. Neither I am voice, hand, or leg nor I am the portion at the bottom of waist (anus or Linga). I am the eternal happiness or bliss state, I am Shiv, I am Shiv.||2||

I am not the state of envy and passion or the emotions of greed and attachment. Neither I am intoxication nor I am the emotion of jealousy. And I am not even the four Purushartha — Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha. I am the eternal happiness or bliss state, I am Shiv, I am Shiv.||3||

I am not Punya (good deed), Paap (Sin), Saukhya (friendship), or Dukha (Grief). Neither I am chants (Mantra) or Shrine (Teertha) nor I am the Veda or the sacrifice and oblation. Also, I am not the food, or the one that should be eaten, or the eater. I am eternal happiness or bliss state, I am Shiv, I am Shiv.||4||

Neither I am the fear of death nor I am the difference between races. Neither I am [any relation like] father, mother, nor I am born. Also, I am not a relative, a friend, a teacher (Guru), or a student (Shisya). I am the eternal happiness or bliss state, I am Shiv, I am Shiv.||5||

I am free from changes, and lack all the qualities and form. I envelope all forms from all sides and am beyond the sense-organs. I am always in the state of equality — there is no liberation (Mukti) or captivity (Bandha). I am the eternal happiness or bliss state, I am Shiv, I am Shiv.||6||

  2. Most non-sikh sources point to our defeat in the end of the Second Anglo-Sikh war as the point when sikhs ceased to be a nation. Considering how we rolled our movement for freedom against the british into a general Indian Azaad movement, only to lose a lot in 1947 and then in the next 60 years afterwards to suffer reversal after reversal, I have to agree that our national pride was lost along with our dignity, sense of community and national character on 21st February 1849 on the streets and fields around the town of Gujrat.

  3. She should not bunch pakistani women with indians. How many indian teenager girls you have seen being married to older men forcefully? I never saw anybody, but I saw number of girls who put kheh in their parent's sirr by marrying off some sullah or running off with some other misfit by taking advantage of freedom given by their indian parents.

It is more common in paki families, as they are more conservative and matches are readily available as cousins.

Some teenager girls don't like any control over them and can make up stories like this. Parents would be happy even if they marry somebody within the community at their own wish, forget about marrying some buddha from back home.

  4. my kids and most of other canadian born kids seem to be unable to say letter ਝ. maybe due to too much exposure to english and not enough to punjabi. neither can they say ਭ, instead it is pronounced ਪ. ਭੰਗੜਾ is spoken ਪੰਗੜਾ, ਭਾਅਜੀ is spoken ਪਾਅਜੀ.

Chaj in ppanjabi is not spelt with a jajja "ਜ" but with a Jhajja "ਝ" Dal Singh Ji.

ਚੱਜ is mostly spelt ਚੱਜ and sometimes ਚੱਝ.

  5. Seriously? Is there a big problem with guys whistling at girls there?

  6. but in Guru ji's Bani he writes the opposite. It seems more likely that the writers metaphorically attempted to capture that the son of the 9th Guru worshipped an aspect of Akaal Purakh and not any deity.

I agree. As per Gurbani (made Guru by Dasam Pita himself) Maya or Devi or Shakti is not to be worshipped. Maybe Dasam Pita summoned her (not puja) to give power to Khalsa.

  7. This is from the Faridkot tika, maybe someone (ahem Lal Singh...) wants to try and translate it? Is that Panjabi or Hindi??

    It says about ਪੌਣ

Pavan has two meanings. One is that pavan(air) is biggest of all. All the organs are dependent on pavan, (second is that) pavan is world guru because instructions from Guru come through it. Meaning, with air shabad comes.
  8. Dalsingh please stop being absurd. Pavan would more accurately mean something like rooh which is a spirit. Rooh in original arabic means air or breath. The same as Pnuema in greek means air and spirit.

Pani Pita is fertilising sperms/seeds in dharti earth the womb the mother Earth. The Guru is bringing a teaching that needs correct ground to grow in and needs to be fertilised. Im sorry but Guru Granth Sahib is not about ecology.

I agree with water and earth. Bhagat Kabir too uses word water for sperm and earth for mother. In similar Shabad, pavan is used for breath or life.

But here in this Shabad pavan is being called Guru.
