Gurfateh

I have put this list for all those who wish to learn the two main languages of gurbani: Sadhu Bhasha and Braj Bhasha

For learning the language of most of Adi Guru Granth Sahib (Sadhu Bhasha):

The best books in English praised unanimously by all Sikh scholars in both India and West:

a. dictionary:

Shackle, Cristopher.1981.A Guru Nanak Glossary,London: School of Oriental and African Studies.

b. grammar with exercises:

Shackle, Cristopher.1983. An introduction to the sacred language of the Sikhs, London: School of Oriental and African Studies.

For learning Braj (for Dasam Guru Granth Sahib, Sarabloh Prakash Granth and the rest of puratan Sikh literature):

a. grammar and anthology:

Snell, Rupert.1991.The Hindi classical tradition : a Braj Bhasha Reader, London: School of Oriental and African Studies.

b. dictionary:

McGregor, R.S.. 1993.The Oxford Hindi-English Dictionary, Oxford : Oxford University Press.

Thsi dictionary contains most Braj words used in medieval literature.

I hope this will help. Needless to say that a good background in Sanskrit is very helpful if not necessary sometimes when it comes to certain texts of Dasam bani.

I will create another list for Sanskrit later.

these books should still be available.
