Hundreds of Indian students who come to the UK to pursue courses in colleges are unable to find part-time work to fund their stay and studies here and have been forced to eat in gurdwaras in Southall.

There has been a three-fold rise in the number of Indian students coming to the UK since the points-based immigration system was introduced in April this year.

Many of them come in the hope of finding work so that they can maintain themselves here.

A BBC Radio 5 documentary found that such students were desperate when they cannot find work. They were also reluctant to return to India for the shame that will follow.

Many such students flock to the gurdwaras in Southall for free food.

The documentary, broadcast on Sunday, quoted Nitin Walia, a student who has sought refuge at the gurdwara, as saying: "I can't afford to rent a room, I'm borrowing money from relatives at home just to buy my bus fare to college. I will only be able to rent a room if I can find a job, if I can't find one I will return to India."

"But that will bring great shame. I don't know how I will return the money I have borrowed." Didar Singh Randhawa, President of Sri Guru Singh Sabha in Southall, said a combination of recession and a surge in the number of students is changing the local landscape.

Randhawa said: "We see hundreds of students hanging out in the streets, but there could be thousands. Most come here every day for food. We are happy to provide food. "But they also ask for accommodation. If they don't find anything we provide them with shelter, for a day or two. We can't keep them for longer. We are hearing that some are sleeping rough."

Ravi Singh, a Business Management student, said, "Agents in India say you will definitely find a part-time job to fund your studies in the UK. But it's totally different here, there are no jobs.

"The Sri Guru Singh Sabha in Southall recently set up a telephone helpline, offering students advice on anything from how to apply for a National Insurance number to buying a travel pass."

"Some of them are begging us to send them back but we haven't got the resources," Randhawa told the programme. He has sent a message to the local press in Punjab to warn applicants to arrange money and accommodation before setting off.

Nitin Walia reportedly paid an agent nearly 600 pounds to arrange his student visa and spent a further 2480 pounds on college fees and a flight.

It took his parents' entire life savings and money borrowed from relatives to meet the cost. "I feel we have been tricked here," Walia said.

  3. Ever wonder why it is so hard to bulk up at the gym? The reason may be genetic, says a team of Canadian researchers.

The scientists analysed volunteers of European, Chinese, Aboriginal and South Asian descent, and found that even among individuals with the same percentage of body fat, South Asians have a lower percentage of skeletal muscle, one of the body’s main muscle groups and the one responsible for all voluntary actions.

The difference in lean muscle mass may be why Indians are more likely than other ethnic groups to develop diabetes and cardiovascular disease, said the researchers. The study is the first to look at ethnic differences in muscle mass as a potential reason for disease risk.

“In general, excess body fat tends to be accompanied by an increase in muscle mass,” said Scott Lear, a researcher at Simon Fraser University in Canada and lead author of the study. “But South Asians had significantly less lean mass than each of the three other groups.”

The researchers found that South Asian men had at least 3 kg less of skeletal muscle than Chinese and European men. South Asian women also had less muscle mass than their counterparts of other ethnicities — by at least 2 kg.

    The findings will appear

in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism in December.

    Integration of outcastes in Sikhism

    Gurfateh

    Integration of outcastes in Sikhism.

As we are aware that there is no caste in Sikhism, yet a person from outcastes converted into Sikhism could later on be the front runner to convert more outcastes into Sikhism.. By our own folly in past we have missed the chance when we did not let Dr Ambedkar convert into our faith.

As we see that many of us are more interested to work with DTNT(denotified and nomadic tribes)like Sikligars, Vanjaras etc., we must forget another part of Sikhi the outcastes or ST.

    Some info about them.

Raghuretas/Majhabis- They are from the caste Kshpacha as per Manusamriti, in Hindus they are called Valmiki while I am not giving the derogatory terms used by upper caste for them. In Sikhs we have the history of them since Baba Jivan Singh Ji Raghureta, Bhai Beer Singh and Dheer Singh(of Talwandi Sabo Ki, where they were shown by Tenth Master as mark of death defying loyalty of Sikhs in comparison to Dhalla Berar mercenaries) ,Bhai Garja Singh(from Bhai Bota Singh and Garja Singh Shaheed), Bhai Beeru Singh(a Misaldar of Taruna Dal, who won various battles in Afghanistan but left the empire there on call for the fellow Sikhs so termed religious or Mazhabi).

There has been a good lot of Patit hood/apostasy in them too due to lack of the knowledge about Sikhism. Other people who may try to pray upon them are Seva Bharati(of RSS, which may not convert them into Hinduism but encourage them to worship mother India, a demigoddess’s picture etc. which is their way to integrate while such acts only will make them an idolater), Christian missionaries ,Aad Dharmis(Hindu Valmikis too want them to revert back to worship Lord Valmiki as their God, they have once made a picture where Lord Valmiki was shown giving blessing to Bhai Jivan Singh Ji) and Bhaniare Wala Piara etc.

Recently I have seen some of their great men other then S. Jaswant Singh Ji of Bhai Jivan Singh Ji Trust,Chandigarh(Ph:09814575196),who is a researcher on the life of Dalit Sikhs and their contribution in Sikhism and has good lot of publication by himself.

It was on last Saturday ie 5/9/9 when a March commemorating Bhai Jaita Ji/Bhai Jivan Singh Ji came to Gurudwara Sisganj Sahib came to Delhi and I had a chance to talk to some other Singhs also, who have assured me for their up most help if we start some work in service of deprived Sikhs in Punjab.

    Their details are given below:

    S. Amrik Singh Shergill,Chairman, Shaheed Baba Jivan Singh Ji Nishkam Seva Society ,Amritsar,Ph 9316908616, while other number for member ship of the society are as follows:93167-04785,98142-04785,92560-96593,98728-19308.

Sant Baba Balbeer Singh Ji, Main coordinator, All India Pingla Ashram, Post Box, 120, Sanour Road, Patiala,Ph:0175-2204785,98142-04785,9316704785.

Bhai Darshan Singh and his son Bhai Upkar Singh, former is a Granth Singh while the latter is a Ragi Singh, they have promise to assist us in their town ie Chamkaur Sahib and to establish our contact with another community ,the Ramdasia’s who also have a Gurdwara there in the memory of Baba Sangat Singh Ji. Ph No of Bhai Upkar Singh Ji is :9465153984.

Ramdasia Sikhs:-also called Ravidasias. They were converted enblock during the time of Fourth Master hence named after him. Other then Bhai Sangat Singh Ji(childhood made of Tenth Master and made sacrifice of him during the Chamkaur fort assault as ,his head was taken by the enemy taking it as of Tenth Master, being from east India, he was called Bangesar) we have another Great Sikh from this community named Gyani Dit Singh Ji, (he was first Dittaram Kabeer Panthi, later became Gyani Dit Singh, a great reformer and scholar of Sikhism, he defeated swami Dayaland ,Arya Samaji, three times in debate).

Main threat to them: Ravidasi Hindus(who are trying to make them worship idol of Bhagat Ravidas Ji and as per the act of HKL Bhagat of 1984 riot fame, they have taken the Verses of Bhagat Ravidas out of Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, making another text called Ravidas Deep, recently Vienna episode is between them and Sikhs), Schcha Sauda dera of Sirsa(active in Malwa region as most of the followers are from Ramdasias and further into north Hariyana),Buddhist missionaries(Active in Doaba and Paur(east Malwa ie Ropar and Ludhiana).

I have seen some of them even more staunch Sikh then myself and are in mainstream but do not divulge their caste at all which is appreciable. More contacts with them will be established and information will be sent. They are the most well educated and well placed in jobs out of deprived Sikhs yet ready to help other Sikhs.

Rahitiyas/Presently call themselves as Weaver Ramdasiyas.

They are perhaps the Dhanuk converts. Dhanuk Sikhs from Rajsthani stocks are there in Firozpur District and number around 30,000 are separate from Weaver Ramdaisias. In past Arya Samaj tried to poach them into their faith. Dhanuk in past used to make a string of bow(Dhanush) from hide of the animal so termed Dhanushkar. They too claim to be weaver but are different from Kori/Koli Shurdas, the case of Bhagt Kabeer. Spread upto Maharhstra and West Bengal and Beyond. In Jammu they are called Chandal(working in cremation ground) while in Rajsthan, they are part of Scheduled tribe breaking the stone. In Punjab, they are by and large united with Ramdsiya Sikhs but prefer to not to divulge their caste.

  6. some people specifically start blaming sikhs for female foeticide without analysing proper facts

    http://sikhspectrum.com/112006/doris/ch11.htm

Let us examine this lopsided female to male ratio in Punjab going back to the colonial period. There has always been a lower female to male ratio in Punjab than the national ratio since the colonial government started conducting census in Punjab. For example, though the 1911-2001 Censuses show consistent lower female to male ratio (Table 1) in Punjab than the national ratio, but there has been a consistent improvement in Punjab vis-à-vis the national situation.

    Table 1

Sex Ratio: Number of women per 1000 men

    Year Punjab India

    1911 780 963

At that time punjab was 85% muslim hindu so it clearly means that both hindu's and muslims were actively involved in female foeticide.

now let us examine the present situation

    e. In the 2001 census, Sikhs had the highest female to male ratio in Punjab. For 1000 men the numbers of female were Sikhs 897, Hindu 846, Muslims 793 and Christians 893.3

now take a look what bhai mati das said before his shaheedi

First of all Bhai Mati das was asked to become a Muslaman. He replied that Sikhism was true and Islam was false. If God had favoured Islam, he would have created all men circumised.

please remember one thing our guru's rejected both hinduism and islam

quran is not the word of god.had quran been word of god then our guru's would had embraced islam.

  8. this is a very good article.there are many cases of rebirth where science and scientific logic fails completely.one of the case of reincarnation

i found on the net is the following

    http://www.tripurainfo.com/jati.htm

Life after death : Arup Chakraborty reincarnated as Arindam Banik ?

    Ruchira Datta

Santir Bazar (South Tripura): 30th June

The question of life after death or transmigration of human soul always triggers heated debates . What compounds the issue is the conflicting positions taken by world's leading scriptures with Hinduism and its

allied faiths upholding the concept of transmigration of souls and a cycle of birth and death and the revelatory semitic faiths envisaging salvation or damnation-depending, of course , on one's depth of faith or lack of it during liftime-upon death. Given this, little Arindam Banik's (5) revelation of the details of his previous life and how he died from an accident is not supposed to be taken seriously by agnostics or rationalists. But his version is corroborated by ground realities and persons who knew him during his previous incarnation as driver Arup Chakraborty .

It was a massive jolt for Arindam's father in may last year . A small-trader by profession, Santanu Banik (36), settled in Shantir Bazar area under south Tripura's Belonia subdivision, was waiting at the motor stand to take his ailing son for medical check-up in district hospital at Udaipur. When Santanu was preparing to board a jeep of the 'commander' brand made by Mahindra copmpany four yearold Arindam burst out in visible fear : 'Papa , do not baord this jeep , take a bus or Maruti vehicle '. Santanu was jolted by the utternances of the four yearold and his knowledge of motor vehicles but he made the up and down journey between Udaipur and Shantir Bazar by bus. Upon return home he lovingly asked his son why he had asked him to avoid a commander jeep and how he knew so much about other motor vehicles . 'He replied spontaneously that he knew everything because he was a driver of commander jeep earlier and had died in an accident at Paticherri area when his jeep had collided with a truck' said Santanu , adding that his son had also asserted that 'commander jeeps and trucks are accident-prone unlike bus or Maruti'.

Santanu was dumbfounded and started reflecting over the issue ;he had always noticed that his four yearold son was fond of small cars among toys and always uttered slangs used by drivers while playing with his toy cars . He persisted with his queries and Arindam disclosed that he used to live in a house at Debdaru village , five kms west of Santir Bazar, and there are two trees, a Siva temple and pond where he would take his bath and wash his commander jeep . 'He also said that two big and red coloured bulls would sleep beside his jeep parked below the two trees ' said Santanu . Arindam also rattled off names of all the places between Santir Bazar and Debdaru as well as between Santir Bazar and Agartala wehre motor vehicles stop while plying .

Having decided to verify whether his little son was actually speaking about his previous birth Santanu took him to Debdaru and was startled when Arindam showed the mud-walled hut where he would live , the pond , the 'Siva' temple , two tall trees and even the red bulls . 'I was amazed and a little bit scared when people of the area corroborated the version given by my son that a jeep would park near this house for several months in 1998 and then it met with an accident' said Santanu , adding that one person had died . But Kartik Sarkar, the house owner , sang a different tune : my brother-in-law Swapan Dey's jeep used to garage here for several months in 1998 and then there was an accident but nobody died .

However, the confirmation Santanu had been seeking was available in Sarasima village near Belonia subdivisional town which he visited . Swapan Dey, resident of Sarasima and the owner of the ill-fated vehicle , confirmed Arindam's version that his commander jeep had collided with a truck at Paticherri area in 1998 but denied any death . 'There were two persons on the jeep at that time including the driver but nobody died' said Swapan Dey. However, his sister Suniti Dey spoke separately with Santanu Banik last year and a team of media-persons only last week and spilled the beans : 'Ek jan manusher Kshati hoyechhila, kintu amra samle diyechhi' (one person was harmed but we managed to tackle the problem).

Nudged for a clearer reply Suniti said that the driver of the jeep had been a Bangladeshi youth called Arup Chakraborty who had died in the accident and was cremated without any information to the police . 'We would call him 'thakurbhai' as he was a Brahmin and later paid compensation to his mother who lived in a village just across the border' Suniti said , pointing to the border yards behind her residence , adding that the death had to be kept a secret because the driver was Bangladeshi and police might create complications.

Blissfully unaware of the stir he has triggered, little Arindam spends the better part of his day now in playing with his toy-vehicles . But his father Santanu Banik is a little worried over any possible psychological damage to his only son by queries on his previous birth and the manner in which he died . 'Baba, we have decided to go on pilgrimage to Kashi , Mathura and Hardwar to seek divine blessings for my grandson , we can not help that God has made him what he is' said Ms Ava Banik, Arindam's grandmother.

  9. <<and filth thing can be consumed by Lambs and Chiecken also in rural Areas. And wheat also gets manure from human waste.>>

very well said vijaydeep singh ji lambs and chickens too consume filth.i myself has seen hens eating from drainage.so for those who say that pig is unclean are wrong.this is islamic superstition which should not be bought into sikhism.

  10. According to a nihang, they say that in Shamsher Pitha's Bani aka Dasam Bani, Dasam Paatshah forbids the meat of a cow to be eaten. Cow's bless us with milk, why would we kill them when they give us such a beutiful nutritious substance.

Pigs provide nothing. Eating pork is all good. Even according to Kshatri maryada beef is forbidden but pork is not.

    Hope I didnt offend anyone.

    bhul chuk muaaf

    gurfateh

in india 70 to 80% milk is provided by buffaloes but still buffaloes are sacrificed in temples.if you consider cow as mother then buffaloe is a mother too.and btw majority of milkmen throw their cows on roads after

they stop producing milk because they can't afford to feed them so throwing them on roads is o.k but killing them is not.

  11. you know what i gave this to my brother, do you know what he said? he said "Well, it doesnt say not to eat beef? It says dont kill black cows"???

OH MY GOD seriously, he is really...well he's a older brother... lol

the verse written on ang 1413 is the following

paahi aytay jaahi veesar naankaa ik naam.

One who forgets the Naam, O Nanak, is covered by countless sins

    -- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

it does not say not to kill black cows or don't eat beef.i read the translation

of the above shabad of pro sahib singh and it says that according to this

verse the person who forgets naam is earning the above sins.

  12. As a matter of fact eating female animals is strictly forbidden as only male animals are allowed for jhatka. Eating buffalos is totally ok and there is evidence that this has been done in the Khalsa Panth (see Prachin Panth Prakash). Wildboar is allowed as well. There is no account of jhatka being performed on cows or pigs. But I have to insist that as a precautionary measure domestic pig and beef are to be avoided. As the tisra panth (third way) we keep a neutrality vis-à-vis Islam and Indian religious traditions that is why it is best to abstain from those two types of meat.

if muslims and hindus will stop smoking tobacco then only sikhs should not

    eat beef and pork.

  13. several rahitnamas forbid both pork and beef. kdsingh80's argument is way too simplistic.

bhai nandlal tankhanama states that khalsa should slay muslim, bhai chaupa singh rehatnama says that khalsa should not trust women,it also say that the service of brahmin sikh is twicw the service of other caste sikhs.if we start following these rehatnama,s then we will end nowhere.

  14. Yes, Islam is a missionary religion. I don't try to convert any person it is usually people who have a good understanding of their religion. I debate, I have debated with many Christians, atheists, and Jews. Some of whom have even converted to Islam.

muslim if you are really interested in debates go to http://www.faithfreedom.org/forum.htm and try to defend islam.there are many atheists ,ex-muslims christians hindus on that site.every muslim that tries to debate with them is badly defeated by them.
