  1. Congrats on your bhakti, veer ji!

I'm game for the chalisa. It would be cool if we could get at least 5 people so we could do 25,000 each over a period of 40 days. Ten people would be better because I'm a lazy moorakh.

Some opinions on the objective would be great. My vote would be for both martial power and cool heads (or political astuteness) for the Panth so that we have the ability to conquer enemies but the presence of mind to know when rajniti is called for rather than rudra ras.

    K.

Come on, Singhs and Singhania! Who else is up for it?

If I have to do it myself, at the end of the 40 days I may just decide to ask Akal Purakh to turn you into poofs.

  2. I am pleased to say that our local Gurdwara sangat completed 250,000 Mool Mantar Jaaps in one week, double our target. Alongside there were hundreds of Sukhmani Sahib, Jap Ji Sahib and Chaupai Sahib paaths done by members of the sangat - all for the chardikalaa of the Panth.

This was all done with the organisation and guidance of Baba Balvinder Singh Nanaksar Vale, who in turn, organised the jaaps in memory of their Gurdev Sant Khem Singh Ji Rumi Vale, who recently passed away at the age of 109 years old after living a life (from early childhood) of intense seva and bhagti.

It is amazing to see how even today, a passionate Gursikh can bring so many sangtan together and inspire them to pray and do seva.

Having been skeptical in the past, I now see and understand how a target and deadline for completing a number of paaths and/or mantars can have massive benefits (on many levels), not only for an individual, but for a community. I pray this sort of anand is experienced by all Sikhs worldwide.

Baba Ji gave some figures regarding how many Mool Mantars are equivalent to a sehaj paath etc (based on the number of akkhar=Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji), I will try and dig these out.

Many people have come to this great forum and contributed all sorts of wonderful information, it would amazing to see if one day perhaps the sangtan of this forum could commit to a group Chalisa with an objective (of which there are many to choose from considering the state of the Panth) and together we could accomplish something wonderful, for ourselves, for this forum and for the Panth.

If this idea appeals, and there are any volunteers, please show your interest in this thread. If there are enough of us, with Maharajs kirpa, perhaps we can achieve something.

    Dhanvaad.

Congrats on your bhakti, veer ji!

  3. Thats is an excellent idea. Only now if we can implement it. Well it was like that before singh sabha destroyed it in intention of reforming the panth.

LOL, let's not have another Singh Sabha discussion on this forum. The last one was ugly enough.

Let's just say that Singh Sabha accomplished some great things but, in some instances, they may have thrown the baby out with the bath water.

I think what is most important for this generation of Gursikhs is to promote the idea of unity within the greater Sikh Panth, to accept that some groups may choose to focus on very different aspects of Sikhi, and to respect the differences as long as they do not contradict Sikh doctrine.

The approach should be to try to understand differences, to foster healthy debate, and to encourage understanding on both sides, rather than to blow shit up - mostly because blowing shit up usually ends up with everyone involved (and innocent bystanders) covered in shit.

However, Sikhs should never become so weak that they do not rise to challenges by bemukhs and naastiks like the anti-Dasam Granth brigade, especially when they are clearly at odds with Sikh History and traditional teachings.

  4. i have no idea how can one do sawa lakh in 40 days, it takes me atleast 7-8 mins to do the complete mool mantar 108 times

To be honest, apart from Mahapurakhs, most of the people I know who have done this have been bibiya who don't work and have grown up children so that they have a lot of free time. Of course, having a lot of leisure time doesn't mean that anyone but people with a lot of sharda can accomplish the chalisa.

I have immense respect for any working man or woman who manages to complete the 40 days. I can't even begin to imagine how much dedication and willpower that must take.

  5. I personally think you need to consciously take that step yourself. One can sit at the stage of vocal recitation (not saying that it's a bad or anything) for as long as one wishes. It is very easy for the tongue to be reciting any jaap and the mind to be wondering elsewhere. To do it with the voice of the mind requires you mun to be involved in the process.

Bhul chuk marf if it contrary to instructions of true realised soul as daas is probably walking the long way round.

This was from Giani Thakur Singh.

I think what he meant was that one still has to involve the mind while one is reciting out loud (or even under one's breath), but the sound gives something for the mind to focus on while it is still in the wandering stage. It doesn't mean that you should do jap with your tounge but let your mind roam freely.

At some point though the mind takes up the jaap automatically and the toungue is not required.

Try this as an experiment: do a mala or two of mul mantar aloud while concentrating the mind then stop reciting aloud. You will find that your mind continues the jaap without having to focus on the sound. Of course, very soon your mind will start to wander when you lose this focus.

The longer one recites aloud with concentration, the longer will your mind continue the jap internally without an aural focus. You can of course increase the length of time you can stay in this state by making some effort to do mental jaap when your mind begins to wander, but initially you may have to switch back to vocal jaap to regain that concentration.

The idea is that eventually all jaap becomes internal when your dhyaan is strong enough (with Gurukirpa).

  6. Here is something i'm struggling with. I'm trying to get to the stage where I can do the mool mantar with the mind but instinctively my tongue begins to move on certain words, hence moving back towards a silient jaap with the tongue. Any advice apart from perserverance?

Oh wait ... you said apart from perseverance. :P

I was told this happens of its own accord and not to force the change from silent jaap to mental jaap. Initially you will move on to mental repetition and back to silent utterance, but eventually it becomes completely internal and continuous without conscious effort.

Adhyatmic, I think you should do the chalisa and tell us how it went. :-D

  7. Kalyug veer,

We probably won't be alive to see this.

Don't be so pessimistic! :P I intend to live until at least a thousand, and for this one time only offer I will sell you this Taoist pill of Immortality (that looks a little an aspirin) for the small fee of £1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.99.

In fact, i really hope i m wrong in this. But as i said, fanaticism has nothing to do with our religion, its a human trait. Speaking in context in sikhi, as sant jagjit singh ji says: its bound to happen when we start feeding amrit to snakes(malechas). Think about it, more emphasis are being put just takin amrit but no emphasis are given - how to prepare yourself to take amrit? Like amount of seva, simran ahead of time etc. In puratan times it used to be opposite. Bhai fauja singh shaheed had to prove himself to panj pyares by putting his life on railway track that he is worthy of amrit.

Now days its opposite, this kind of leniency in the panth have led gondai's/ mobs, criminals, fanatics get initiated in the dharam just so they can hide their avguns behind dharam and use dharam (emotional speeches, getting into commites) to gain more power. They are dalal(pimps) who like to use dharam as prostitution to gain more power to themselves.

I agree that this is the ideal way to administer amrit (only to those who are worthy), but this also makes our very small numbers even smaller. Spiritually this may be excellent, but politically it is suicide - and I believe Sikhi has to exist as a political entity both to influence the rest of the world and to represent the Sikh Panth against those who do not understand us, those who would seek to destroy us, and those who wish to enforce their culture and social mores on us (miri piri and so on).

I don't know what the solution is. Perhaps to be more inclusive and include sehajdharis, udasis, nihangs and nirmalay as different members of the same family, but to promote the ideal of Amritdhari rehatvaan Gursikhs as an ideal?

  8. Giani Thakhur Singh also said that you don't have to go for completing in 40 days as that would just be extremely difficult for a beginner. Just start of doing as many as you can and try and reach the 125,000 target. With guru ji's kirpa you will reach there eventually, just not in 40 days.

    I agree with this method.

Also, you can try doing the 33 malay a day for a week (or just on the weekend if you work) if you want something more intense and a feeling for how much sharda and dhyaan (and Gurukirpa) Gursikhs must have to do the whole 40 days.

It won't take a whole 8 hours as your repetition naturally gets faster, but it will still take 4-6 hours.

    K.

  9. Singh, give it +100 years. Give our sikh population get to 300 million mark. Then one can see, there is no religion for fanaticism. It's human avgun just like choori, dhuka, irkha. Fanaticism is global problem. If we refuse to do any house cleaning, just give it +100 years and let our population grow, you will see we be just like sulleh(sunnis and shia) killing each other for difference of opinions. Stabbing/beating someone with machetes(hathora) already have an killing intent as serious as 2nd degree murder. I don't know what else will it take us to get up do some house cleaning? bodies in body bag?.

Aight. See you here in 100+ years. :-D You owe me some gulab jaman if you are wrong (and I think you are).

We've already been around for a good 500 years, Singh. We've got a lot of catching up to do if we are going to compete with the Abrahamic religions for greatest number of murders in the name of God. They were far ahead of us at the 500 year mark.

I don't believe there is anything in Sri Guru Granth Sahib or Sri Dasam Granth like the kind of hate espoused in the Old Testament and the Quran.

But this is another topic for another day. Right now I'm going to enjoy the beautiful weather and try to take over the world.

Also, Amardeep, I disagree. There is going to be chaos and violence as long as Gurughar is treated like a profit-making business and not as a house of worship for the devoted. When the next generation take over, they are just going to fight about other issues, but at the end of the day it will still be about the money.

    Toodlypips chaps,

  10. And we have the audacity to call people of other faiths uncivilised... pathetic.

Meh. We still have some way to go before we start blowing ourselves up in a gurdwara and killing innocent worshippers.

Anyway, it's a pretty disgusting act.

It's clear that the financial incentives of running a gurdwara have to be removed so that the only ones who will do it are those who do it out of a desire for seva.

  11. Waheguru ji ka Khalsa Waheguru ji ke Fateh

I have a few questions regarding a chalisa 125,000 mool mantar paath in 40 days.

First question is what is the maryada for it.

AFAIK, it's the same as maryada for sharda pooran paath - i.e., have jal, jyot, and dhoop present. It should be done the first time sitting on the same place and the same time. Some say start at amritvela facing the rising sun, but I don't know if the direction one faces is really important if you can't see the sun (i.e., if you have no window facing east).

Sant Jagjit Singh Harkhowale writes about this in his autobiography which can be found online.

Secondly does anyone know of a person who has completed a chalsia or even attempted one?

What effects did it have on there jeeven? What troubles did they face when trying to complete one?

Yes, but I don't know how it changes their jeevan though I don't doubt that it had a mighty change on their internal state.

Giani Thakur Singh said that doing such an intense tapasya will sometimes bring out your past karams (so that they can be destroyed) - but the karams have to come out at some time anyway.

That's why people sometimes increase their tapasya in a gradual way (to reduce the sudden onslaught of problems).

However, things clear up quickly if you finish the chalisa. If you don't, from the experience I have heard from others, the negative situations remain for a while because they are not completely burned away by your tapasya.

Does it matter if one is amritdhari or not?

You don't have to be Amritdhari to do the chalisa, but you need to keep rehat while you are doing it

Must it be done while sitting? How did they keep count of how much is done?

This is recommended first time round because it is an aid to concentration. Unless your concentration is firm, it's too easy to get distracted if you do it while walking around.

  12. Seems like these MPs believed that the following statement implied some sort of threat towards them:

"They have never been invited," Inderjit Singh Bains said during an interview on Radio Sher-e Punjab "If they come, they need to bring their own security."

I see no implied or explicit threat in that statement at all. If the MPs were not invited, naturally they would have to bring their own security. Why should the organisers spend the sangat's money on security for people who are not welcome?

It looks like some people are blowing an innocent comment out of proportion for their own agendas.

To me it seems that Canada has become the political vassal of India.

  13. Kanpur(UP) ch 28th March 2010 nu 42 sikha ne 2 Banis Sri Guru Granth Sahib(Japji sahib and Anand Sahib)to par ke amrit chakeya si. Vichar karan te pata lagga ki oh Dasam Granth nu Guru Gobing Singh Ji Maharaj di krit nai mande hun, islaye onna ne 2 baniya par ke hi amrit sanchar kar ditta.

Well, then those 42 aren't Amritdhari Sikhs, they are still bakray. Their gooroo is the hobbit Darshan Lal.

And either write in English or use Gurmukhi script.

  14. It's probably best that any letter written to this paper comes from a large Sikh organisation in Canada rather than angry individuals, even if the anger is righteous and the headline is clearly a ploy to rile up already frustrated Sikhs. It should include an introduction to what the Akal Takht represents for Sikhs (likening it to the Vatican for Catholics), then provide copies of the hukumnamas against Darshan Lal appearing in any Gurdwara so that people understand that what Darshan Lal is doing is inciting Sikhs and purposely enflaming passions. Perhaps copies of the passages from Open Secrets should be quoted to show that he is acting as an Indian agent. The aim should be that the Canadian authorities ban him from entering Canada, and it should embarrass the Indian government so that they are forced to react against their agent.

Maybe next time there is a bhanga in Canada with these kala-afghana scum, someone could pick up Darshan Lal and use him to beat some kala afghana to death. Perhaps then the tabloids in Canada could write articles asking for a ban on fat, egotistical traitorous Indian hobbits.

Edit: Looking on the bright side, there will likely be some people who, under the influence of Kaljug, will search for translations of Sri Dasam Granth because of this article, and will realise how deep thw wisdom of this Granth is.

  16. Getting back to the topic on hand, do y'all believe these powers either did not exist or are no longer available in kalyuga?

In Gurbani, particularly Dasam Bani, the shakti swaroop of Akal Purakh is in the form of sarbloh shastar. Both edged weapons and projectile weapons are described as manifestations of Chandi/Shakti of Akal Purakh. Does this mean that only sarbloh shastar exist as Dharmic weapons? Do none of the legendary mystical weapons exist in this yuga?

As an aside, I'd be interested to hear the views of Sangat here on whether they believe modern weapons like landmines, nuclear weapons, chemical and biological weapons could ever be considered Dharmic. Are they still considered shakti swaroop?

    Regards,

    K.

  17. Did the people who acquired these powers be able to extend their tails? That would be the true test if it really worked!

    human_tails_01.jpg

The coccyx is a remnant of a lost tail. There have been cases of humans born with vestigial tails.

On a serious note, I'd be interested in your views about whether you believe the weapons described in Indian epics are merely symbolic or based on some real event that has been mythologised.

(By the by, I do not believe deities like Hanuman exist in the forms described in Indian mythology, but I believe they still reveal some important truths hence their mentions in Gurbani. For example, in Hanuman Natak, which was a favourite read of Dasmesh Pita, Hanuman is eulogised because he is a Bhagat of Waheguru and a Dharmic hero who fights evil.)

    Regards,

    K.
