First of all in order to understand gurbani you dont need punjabi, what you do need is submission to Guru wholeheartedly, and no one is pulling Sikhi to Punjabi culture. You should not have any doubt for the Guru or his writings. You need to be humble and flexible , and need to accept that you can be wrong sometimes, need to show openness to other interpretations.

That means you cannot do slander of Dasam Bani & Chaupai Sahib.

Thats the first step to learn Sikhi.

The irony is she hasnt realized the way she puts things is slander , a gora with akj influence is altogether a worst combination. They barely connect to the language and are heaped upon concepts which are close minded by the types of akj and people who are pyscho don quixotes ..thinking of themselves are knights in shining armour to avenge 84.

  2. All this fawning over this Guru-nindak is making me feel like vomiting.

speak for yourself friend. No-one should be proud of any Guru-nindak spreading their lies.

Personally, I think she has made a mistake in taking amrit, as she has not even passed the first stage of Sikhi.

I dont look at it like that , i dont think she has done any mistake . I did tell her something similar to think over her decision but let me tell you in the market of religions, there are other religions which would be less challenging to follow . The Buddhist and Bahai are very popular with lesser issues . If she would have wanted to be at ease she could have chosen them . She has faced challenges and has been with Sikhi inspite of the fact that the indic values are clashing with her mindset.

We of indic origin are lost in addressing 'sahib' and 'ji' and doing some simran and sewa , we start seeing a halo around ourselves . Let us learn to accept the odds, the Gurus did this too.

Bhai Mardana ji  even though being a Muslim was a follower of Guru Nanak, following him playing the rabab. What do we know of his diet and habits ?

If you have ever visited Sachkhand Sri Hazoor Sahib especially during Dussehra and Holi look around what you get to see Sikligars, Lambada tribals Vanjharas , all of these have followed Guru Gobindsingh ji and most of them are not keshdhari , do not speak Punjabi ,which means they do not totally blend with the roop of Sikhi but still are with the Panth. Thanks to the Hazoori singhs who have accepted them as they are. The Punjabis couldnt even tolerate the Majhbis and Ravidassis who are more blended with the Punjabi culture.

I do not want to judge her faith and love for Sikhi , up above there is the Guru and Akaal Purakh to judge . I know for sure myself that i couldnt even do this , i havent taken amrit nor have kes, i am not even fit to be a dog of the Guru ghar.

Hum naahi channgge na bura koi ..

SATKIRIN KAUR I AM PROUD OF YOU, if not everybody.

  3. Ram as in Raja Ramchander ji is considered the element of good and Ravan as the element of negativity which is why during Dussehra Ravan's idol is burnt..

Ram is worshipped as messenger of Parmatma and as Parmatma's Himself too...and folklore says He was sent to destroy Ravan.

So when Guru Gobindsingh ji in His Bani brings the focal point to Parmatma Waheguru..this tuk would mean the Good and Evil both have gone, nothing remains ..the constant is Parmatma ..The Nirankaar Akaal..

  4. HI all,

I have seen some reports on social media about some fighting taking place in India, well Kashmir if I'm not mistaken. Indian government clamping down hard on peaceful protests.

It wasn't made clear why they are protesting - at first I thought maybe it was maybe a pro khalistan type of demonstration, but I don't think it was. Someone has been burning copies of the SGGS or something like that? can anyone shed some light on this for me please?

Its all about who shot the first shot ..! my friends tell me the crowds are under control of those elements wanting to create mischief ..None of the mainstream Udasi Nihang Sewapanthi are heading the agitation so really dont know who is right ..

  5. Wanda is my birth name... Harkiran once I took a Sikh name and H came up as the letter... the significance of Harkiran was my Dad just before he died in 2001, he said something about 'remembering the light' so I wanted light in the meaning.

I was using Satkirin because I didn't want to use my real name in forums... but I don't care anymore.

The baseline is we are happy for you ..by whatever name you go ..you make us proud...so tomorrow if someone here shows me this article and tells me look at this 'gori' she became sikh...i would feel so proud to tell her ..main jaahnda enhu..(i know her )...  :)

  7. Well then if this forum wishes to be only for so called puritan sects, then rename it... this thread started because Sikh Rehet Maryada is the only accepted Rehet Maryada by Akal Takht.  Akal Takht is the seat of Sikh authority.  SRM was the only attempt which was in any successful to unite the different ideologies of different sects, and using SGGSJ as the litmus test.  From thirteen years of deliberation using many historical documents and over hundred of Sikhs participating some very prominent for the time, they arrived at what we have now.  Out of all that, it was determined that there is nothing in Sikhi that says women should receive less right then men when it comes to home life, social life, and religious life.  It was determined there is nothing in Gurbani saying women should not be allowed to do some of the seva, or hold authority positions.  So it was written as such in Sikh Rehet Maryada.  Sikhs Rehet Maryada is the RM which is followed by vast majority of Sikhs (because its the only one recognized). Gurbani agrees with everyone receiving equal treatment. Even DDTs own RM agrees with it (even though Chatanga tries to say that everything but gender counts even though gender is clearly in the very same sentence so it can't be referring to something else)

If you guys want to personally subjugate and limit your wives and have them see you as Gods, then I will pray for them to have strength to make it through this life so they can have better next time. And I hope/pray that all of you end up in female bodies next time with full memory of what you did in this lifetime so you can lay in the bed you made yourself knowing what your ideology was. And I hope you all end up in families who give preference to sons and are married off to misogynist Singhs who only want you to live in the kitchen serving him and bowing to him and seeing him as a God over you.  And I hope he tells you NO for every goal you'd like to have in life and force you to obey and make you feel like he is superior to you because you know... the Gurus all had penises and he does and you don't so that makes him better than you. (And I hope I get to see it, from my new superior male body).  In your version of Sikhi, with it's 'customs' of making women feel miserable, I wonder how most women don't just go and end it so they can be reborn as males.

Your view of Sikhi puts women in a crappy and miserable role.  If this version of Sikhi was what all the books and prominent websites etc had, I would never have even considered looking into it. I would have just lumped it with Islam as another oppressive ideology that hates women.  My husband really did not want me coming back here because he said please please do not think that is what majority of Sikhs are like because they aren't. And in Kashmir, women have been doing ALL seva alongside males including Panj Pyaras and Granthis.  Kashmir Sikhi is actually stronger because of that... Sikh marriages in Kashmir are stronger because of that.  There is no imbalance between husbands and wives there and nobody is being subjugated or relegated to a lesser status.  DDT actually tried to infiltrate there and they were stopped and told to stick to themselves.  ALL of Kashmir recognizes only Sikh Rehet Maryada.

If this forum is only for talking about the sects which 'claim' to be puritan, then you need to say so.  Rename this to DDT/Sant Samaj/Nihang etc. Awareness or something... you will save yourself future headaches.

    Ciao.

Aye Meri Maayi ..muaaf karde sannu...baksh de....amrite vele beh ke tere kol behes karan di shakti kittho aahndi pata nahi..

  8. How can anything I wrote be considered hatred?  Hatred is condemning women to a second class existence in Sikhi...

Look , be clear ..on this forum some may agree with you and others dont ..i am not the type that will keep nagging over issues ...if you feel women should do sewa ..be a sewadaar with a jatha that allows women ..thats your choice ...arguing with us on what you feel should be the ideal situation wont make sense ..none of us here are are jathedars , mukhis , or members of SGPC....

your post on every topic will have trash and filth against customs which came in place for a reason...pages full of your trash !

It is you who accepted Sikhi...you did not receive an invitation ..so please analyze your actions, Yogi Bhajan had the guts to form his own jatha and redefine Sikhi in his own way  If you wish you can set an example like him.

You call yourself as someone from an aboriginal origin of Canada then poke your nose into your own community and fight for their rights , you wont be considered a lesser Sikh for doing so.

N30SINGH , Chatanga1 bhaa ji ...all the seniors can we not have some great discussions instead of this trash? the forum even if quite is worth visiting, we keep reading older posts.

I am not saying we ban Satkirin or something ..inspite of all odds she is one of us ...but we need to finally convey a message to her that this is not the place for some puritan reform movement ..

  9. So... it's "Indic" custom then that you are trying to hide under to justify discrimination??  Is discrimination a basic tenet of 'Indic Custom'? If so, then is that a custom worth keeing?

Didn't the Gurus teach against such 'customs'??

p.s. I am not blaming Maryada... I am blaming those who CLAIM to follow certain Maryada but not actually following it.  Those who follow Damdami Taksal's Maryada have to see caste and gender on the same level as DDT's RM says that differences in caste and gender were both eliminated with the creation of the Khalsa.  So any differences that were used to discriminate prior, those 'customs' you speak so findly of, were eliminated because we are all equals and on same level in Khalsa. (Are you even Amritdhari??)

I follow Sikh Rehet Maryada, and I don't pick and choose bits to follow out of it.  SRM says every human gets equal treatment and anyone can do seva including Panj Pyaras.  DDTs RM, has a contradiction.  Because on the one hand it's saying that women are to see men as God over them, while men are told to see women as 'followers'. This creates a definite heirarchy with males above females....  (this is one questionable statement in the document) because then further down it says differences in gender / caste etc were eliminated with creation of the khalsa. So any differences which caused imbalance / heirarchies were eliminated when Khalsa was created.  So the first statement no longer holds... how can there be a contradiction?  How can women be told to see men as Gods over them, and then told that differences between male / female were eliminated??  One of the two statements were obviously added in or altered along the way to suit someone's agenda... but how can we tell which one? Because our Gurus would never issue us with contradictory instructions right?? So we go to Gurbani as the litmus test.  What does it say about equality?  "As Gurmukh look upon ALL with a single eye of equality for in each and every heart the divine light is contained" this is only one such example of MANY.  So the litmus test, Gurbani points to the statement about women seeing men as Gods over them as being the one whcih doesn't fit. And it's very very coincidental that the wording is almost identical to the same statement found in Laws of Manu... (so we can easily see where the thought came from - Brahaminical thinking creeping into Sikhi).  Go ahead, look up Laws of Manu and read it and then read Gurmat Rehet Maryada... the lines are so similar it's nearly a copy and paste!  Now it WOULD work, if the original was saying for both spouses husband and wife to see God in each other, as ALL humans were instructed in Gurbani to see the divine light in "each and every heart".  Right??  So I am not dissing the Maryada, but merely suggesting that at some point, some things were changed to inject sexist views of women.  Another example is the idea of sootak or ritual impurity of women to be used as another excuse to limit women from seva (and another excuse to call them inferior to males).  But again, if one actually reads what is written in Gurbani it tells us that the real impurity is not caused by blood , but instead is within one's mind... our actions, our thoughts, our deeds towards others and uses 'sucking the blood of others' as an example... exploitation. It says that one does not become pure by washing the body, but the real purity can only be experienced in the mind in which 'naam' (Waheguru) resides.  Gurbani was never speaking about physical blood making someone impure, it was using allegory - physical references to shift our thinking.  What I am against are these obvious anti-female teachings being perpetuated in Dheras etc. and the youth now (just look at Paapiman) have a disdain and contempt for females to the point they feel they deserve respect from females just for being male and that females are inferior, bad, impure, etc so women should just shut up and obey them and accept that they are the lesser creatures they are.  (ie: embodying the saying... "shut up and make me a sammich woman").

What would Guru Nanak Dev Ji say if he were alive today??

there was this woman i forgot her name ...who used to write so much of trash and the other is you...stop justifying your hatred filled attitude behind Sikhi...you have no idea what you want.

  10. I am not racist at all (married a Punjabi didn't I)..... and I actually have aboriginal north american background.  So neither I nor my family had anything to do with what you were ranting about... in fact your pointing these things out sounds like a child... when a teacher scolds them from something, and the child says "but Johnny did it too" in order to take the heat off himself.  It's not a very becoming trait to try and deflect blame to others.

Ohh ! So you are a teacher !!!!! blame on others ? when you blame Maryada and Indic customs what do you think you are doing ? showering praises ?
