Volunteers : SIKHS for SCHOOLS

SSA everyone,

I am writing this to seek advice and guidance from the panth towards starting a new movement, Sikhs for Schools.

About Myself:

My name is Taranjeet, I have settled in India after being abroad for over a decade. I graduated from IIT Kharagpur and then IIM calcutta. Currently I am pursuing my own startup.

The Problem:

Upon returning, I have seen that we as a community, have been too absorbed in constructing Gurdwaras upon Gurdwaras (which apparently, as a personal opinion, has become a good cash machine also for the SGPC), but none of them have skill centres for our kids (except few gyaan path). I truly believe, the future lies with our kids, and we should do something to levitate them from the current state of knowledge absorption and skill development. 

I have seen that schools from various communities are springing up. However, something which provides strong skill sets and unique technology based knowledge absorption is chronically lacking within us.

The Solution:

I propose to crowd-source and bring together the best of the lot among us, to create modules for existing schools or new schools, which impart the right training on sikhi and skill sets associated with it. 

I am ready to put a document on dropbox, where we can all come in as volunteer and start this movement. 

Please let us know your suggestions.

Hello Taran 

I think we need to find a way to utilise the Gurudawara more in order to provide facilities for the kids i.e. punjabi classes, gurmat classes , gatka classes , santyia classes , kirtan classes , gym classes , homework classes etc... There is an element of these being held around many Gurudawaras around the world. But sad to say for many the quality is not there, simply due to funding. Many Gurudawaras do not have a budget set aside to invest in our kids.

A charitable organisation like Basics of Sikhi(BOS) are doing a tremendous job and full time , again funding is being done by individuals / smaller organisations ( I believe the gurudawara should fund  BOS and let them spread all over the world , which they are doing )

May be hook up with BOS , get their thoughts and ideas or even become one of their parcharaks as the have a base in India as well .
