The Sikh Panth is heading towards yet another division over the issue of forthcoming tercentenary celebrations of ‘GurGaddi Divas’ of ‘Gurugranth Sahib, which falls in October 2008.

Even as Akal Takht and the SGPC are determined to celebrate the event as per the Nanakshahi calendar, a section of Sikh sants including Baba Sarbjot Singh Bedi who met at Takht Hazur Sahib, Nander (Maharashtra), late last evening, opposed the Nanakshahi calendar.

Baba Bedi alleged that with the approval of the calendar, Sikh tradition stood violated.

Nirmale Sant Akhara chief Mahant Gyan Dev of Haridwar, who was also present, also opposed the calendar. He announced the Nirmale Sant sect would not-accept Nanakshahi calendar and celebrate functions as per the Bikrami calendar.

The Patna Sahib and Hazoor Sahib Takhts have not given approval to the Nanakshahi calendar so for, despite repeated requests by the SGPC and the Jathedar of Akal Takht.

However, Mr Laddu Singh Mahajan, President, Hazoor Sahib Management Committee, told The Tribune that no final decision had been taken on any calendar with regard to the tercentenary celebrations. He said all five Sikh high priests, including the Jathedar of Akal Takht, would be invited next month to take a decision on the issue.

The decision was postponed on the request of Mr Parmjit Singh Sarna, president Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), who took up the matter with Mr Buta Singh, Governor, Bihar, who is also Chairman of the Nanded Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee.

Mr Buta Singh reportedly assured Mr Sarna that a consensus would be evolved for the final decision.
