The Color Red

Guru ji have used the color red in two different scenarios

1) To signify the color of lover, feelings of a Bhagat when he is coming close to Union with His Husband Lord. There are countless shabad regarding this. 

• Man tham Rathaa Laal hoaa rasanaa rathhe gunn saar  ang 787

2) , and also to describe the Maya.  

• Sooha Rang Vikar Hai Kanth N Paaeiaa Jaae ||  Page 786

 

So really the interpretation of color red depends on avastha of jeev, so either passion for Maya or passion for Lord.

All important things in life are red, like our blood.

Thank you learner. The colour red in spiritual terms denotes someone who is coloured in the love of Karta purkh.

This shabad talks about this love and the effect it has on such a devotee of Karta Purkh:

 

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ਰਾਗੁ ਆਸਾ ਘਰੁ ੭ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

ਲਾਲੁ ਚੋਲਨਾ ਤੈ ਤਨਿ ਸੋਹਿਆ ॥

(ਹੇ ਭੈਣ!) ਤੇਰੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਉਤੇ ਲਾਲ ਰੰਗ ਦਾ ਚੋਲਾ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਲੱਗ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇਰੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਦੀ ਲਾਲੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਡਲ੍ਹਕ ਮਾਰ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ

ਸੁਰਿਜਨ ਭਾਨੀ ਤਾਂ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹਿਆ ॥੧॥

ਸ਼ਾਇਦ ਤੂੰ ਸੱਜਣ-ਹਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਲੱਗ ਰਹੀ ਹੈਂ, ਤਾਹੀਏਂ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ (ਭੀ) ਮੋਹ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ।੧।

ਕਵਨ ਬਨੀ ਰੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਲਾਲੀ ॥

ਹੇ ਭੈਣ! (ਦੱਸ,) ਤੇਰੇ ਚੇਹਰੇ ਉਤੇ ਲਾਲੀ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਆ ਬਣੀ ਹੈ?

ਕਵਨ ਰੰਗਿ ਤੂੰ ਭਈ ਗੁਲਾਲੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਕਿਸ ਰੰਗ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਤੂੰ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਗੂੜ੍ਹੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਾਲੀ ਬਣ ਗਈ ਹੈਂ? ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।

ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਤੁਮਹਿ ਸੁਹਾਗੁ ॥

ਹੇ ਭੈਣ! ਤੂੰ ਬੜੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਦਿੱਸ ਰਹੀ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇਰਾ ਸੁਹਾਗ-ਭਾਗ ਉੱਘੜ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ

ਤੁਮ ਘਰਿ ਲਾਲਨੁ ਤੁਮ ਘਰਿ ਭਾਗੁ ॥੨॥

(ਇਉਂ ਜਾਪਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਤੇਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆ ਵੱਸਿਆ ਹੈ; ਤੇਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਕਿਸਮਤ ਜਾਗ ਪਈ ਹੈ ।੨।

ਤੂੰ ਸਤਵੰਤੀ ਤੂੰ ਪਰਧਾਨਿ ॥

ਹੇ ਭੈਣ! ਤੂੰ ਸੁੱਚੇ ਆਚਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈਂ ਤੂੰ ਹੁਣ ਸਭ ਥਾਂ ਆਦਰ-ਮਾਣ ਪਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈਂ ।

ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਭਾਨੀ ਤੁਹੀ ਸੁਰ ਗਿਆਨਿ ॥੩॥

(ਜੇ) ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗੀ ਲੱਗ ਰਹੀ ਹੈਂ (ਤਾਂ) ਤੂੰ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਗਿਆਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਬਣ ਗਈ ਹੈਂ ।੩।

ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਭਾਨੀ ਤਾਂ ਰੰਗਿ ਗੁਲਾਲ ॥

(ਹੇ ਭੈਣ! ਮੈਂ) ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗੀ ਲੱਗ ਗਈ ਹਾਂ, ਤਾਹੀਏਂ, ਮੈਂ ਗੂੜ੍ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੀ ਗਈ ਹਾਂ,

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਭ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥੪॥

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਖ—ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਚੰਗੀ (ਪਿਆਰ-ਭਰੀ) ਨਿਗਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਤੱਕਦਾ ਹੈ ।੪।

ਸੁਨਿ ਰੀ ਸਖੀ ਇਹ ਹਮਰੀ ਘਾਲ ॥

(ਪਰ) ਹੇ ਸਹੇਲੀ! ਤੂੰ ਪੁੱਛਦੀ ਹੈਂ (ਮੈਂ ਕੇਹੜੀ ਮੇਹਨਤ ਕੀਤੀ, ਬੱਸ!) ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਮੇਹਨਤ ਜੋ ਮੈਂ ਕੀਤੀ

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਆਪਿ ਸੀਗਾਰਿ ਸਵਾਰਨਹਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੧॥੫੨॥

ਉਸ ਸੁੰਦਰਤਾ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਦੇ ਕੇ) ਸੋਹਣੀ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ।੧।੫੨।

 

Guru Sahib tells us about the colour being an effect of prem:

 

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

ਨਾ ਮੈਲਾ ਨਾ ਧੁੰਧਲਾ ਨਾ ਭਗਵਾ ਨਾ ਕਚੁ ॥

(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ) ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਿੱਬੜਦਾ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਧੁੰਧਲੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ (ਭਾਵ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਾਫ਼ ਪਿਆ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਭੇਖ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ, ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਿਆਪਦਾ,

 

ਨਾਨਕ ਲਾਲੋ ਲਾਲੁ ਹੈ ਸਚੈ ਰਤਾ ਸਚੁ ॥੧॥

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦੇ ਨਾਮ) ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੀ) ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਪੇ੍ਰਮ-ਰੰਗ ਨਾਲ) ਗੂੜ੍ਹਾ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।

I also wanted to add that in Hindu sanskriti, women wear red on their wedding day because they have found their husband lord.

The ਲਾਲੁ in SGGS is in spiritual terms only. The physical act of avoiding wearing red/green comes from these colours being prefered by HIndus/Muslims and being identification markers in 18th century.

I have never seen a red or green nishan sahib ever in pictures/photos.

So if someone wanted to go by SGGS only in spiritual terms, the wearing of the colours red/green are of no consequence. The colours are irrelevant. But to go by the traditions of the Guru Khalsa Panth, red/green colured clothes are to be avoided.

 

Just to add to this topic, Sikhs never used to wear black turbans until Singh Sabha Lehar morchas.

A bit surprising as black is one of the four primary colors of the Khalsa.

Even at Nanaksar, some Singhs wear Black cholas, but never seen them with black turbans.

True. Black indicates man di awasta. Black means renunciation of five satans residing within each and every human being.

Sikhs/Khalsa are not meant to wear it unless they are in Vayraggi awasta! Let’s face it .... there aren’t any in this man di awasta these days. Money Rules, if you know what this means?  Greed has replaced solemn discipline required  to surrender or fight the five Satan’s instead!
