recently been reading this book and certainly have changed some of my views on what happened in 84 basically the book says that it had more to do with politics. Many issues it claims were political but turned into religious because of the Akali Dal.

the book is very harsh toward Sant Ji and Sikhs.

ਰੂਪ ਢਿੱਲੋਂ ਆਮ ਲਿਖਾਰੀਆ ਤੋਂ ਥੋੜਾ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਅਲੱਗ ਹੈ। ਜਿਹੜੇ ਉਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਕੁਝ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਤਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਰੂਪ ਤਾਂ ਇੰਗਲੈਂਡ ਦਾ ਜੰਮਪਲ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮਾਂ-ਬੋਲੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਵਿਰਸਾ ਬੋਲੀ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਹਰ ਯੂਕੇ ਦੇ ਪਲੇ ਵਾਸੀ ਵਾਂਗਰ ਬਰਤਾਨਵੀ ਲਹਿਜੇ ਵਾਲ਼ੀ ਉਪਬੋਲੀ 'ਚ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੀ ਲਿਖਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਵਾਕ ਬਣਤਰ ‘ਤੇ ਅੰਗ੍ਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਦਾ ਅਸਰ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪਾਠਕ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਣਿਕ ਬਰਤਾਨਵੀ ਲਹਿਜੇ ਵਾਲ਼ੀ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਅਨੰਦ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।  

ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਠੇਠ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਹਰ ਜਣੇ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਾਇਦ ਪਸੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਵੇਗੀ। ਪਰ ਸੱਚ ਹੈ ਲਹਿੰਦੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਤੇ ਚੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਲਹਿਜੇ ਵੀ ਅੱਜ ਕੱਲ੍ਹ ਅਲੱਗ ਹਨ। 

ਰੂਪ ਦੀ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਪਰਵਾਸੀਆਂ ਵਾਲ਼ੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਨਾ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪਰਵਾਸ ਕੀਤਾ ਨਾ ਕੇ ਰੂਪ ਪਰਵਾਸੀਆਂ ਵਾਲ਼ੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ  ਅਹਿਮ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਜਾਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ। ਨਾਲ਼ੇ ਪਰਵਾਸੀ ਤਾਂ ਫੇਰ ਵੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਲੇਖਕ ਹਨ। ਰੂਪ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। 

ਰੂਪ ਦੀਆਂ ਲਿਖਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਅਨੰਨ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਕਈ ਵਿਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੌਹਦੇ ਹਨ। ਹੁਣ ਤਕੀਰ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਗਲਪ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੈ, ਫੌਜਦਾਰੀ ਗਲਪ ਅਤੇ ਜਾਦੂ-ਯਥਾਰਥ ਵੀ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾਂ ਕਈ ਹੋਰ ਰੂਪ ਭੇਦਾਂ 'ਚ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਹਨ। 

ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦੋ ਨਾਵਲ ਕਦੀ ਇੱਕੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ। ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਅਪਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਅਦਬ ਦੀਆਂ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਤਕਨੀਕਾਂ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਹੜੀਆਂ ਹਾਲੇ ਤੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਲੇਖਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਵਰਤਣ ਨੂੰ। ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਵਲ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਇੰਜ ਜਾਪਦਾ ਹੈ। 

2020 ਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਜਦ 'ਕੋਵਿਡ' ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਵੇਲ਼ੇ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਸ਼ਾਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਅੰਦੋਲਨ ਚਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ, ਰੂਪ ਨੇ ਨਾਗਾਂ ਦੀ ਖੇਡ ਨਾਵਲ ਲਿਖਿਆ। ਪਰ ਛਾਪਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਵਕਤ ਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਇਹ ਨਾਵਲ ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਹਲਾਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿੱਤਰ ਪਟ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਖਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਨਾਵਲ ਦਾ ਅਸਲੀ ਵਿਸ਼ਾ ਤਾਂ ਜਸੂਸੀ ਜੱਗ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕਮਾਲ ਨਾਲ਼ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਦੋਲਨ ਤੇ ਕੋਵਿਡ ਨਾਲ਼ ਸਮਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। 

ਨਾਵਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿੱਤੇ ਰੁਕਾਵਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ! ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ਼ ਪਾਠਕ ਨੂੰ ਖਿੱਚ ਕੇ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਖ਼ੂਬਸੂਰਤੀ ਨਾਲ਼ ਨਵੇਂ ਦੌਰ ਦੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਲਿੱਖੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕਈ ਨਵੇਂ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ਼ ਅਪਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ। ਸੱਚ ਹੈ ਇਸ ਨਾਵਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਈ ਕਥਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। 

ਇਸ ਨਾਵਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਨੁਕਸਾਨ, ਪਿਆਰ, ਲੰਗਾਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਆਂਟ ਸਾਂਟ ਜਾਪਦੇ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਬਰਤਾਨੀਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਲੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੋਚਦੇ ਹਨ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਭਾਰਤੀ-ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨੀ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਲੋਕ ਜਾਪਦੇ ਹਨ ਬਾਰੇ ਬਿਆਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। ਕਹਾਣੀ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਜਸੂਸਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਹੈ, ਰੂਪ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਦੀ ਰੂਹ ਦੀ ਛਾਣ ਕਰ ਕੁਰ ਕੇ ਪਾਠਕ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਕੁਝ ਰੱਖ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਸੀਅਤ ਹੈ। 

ਨਾਵਲ ਦੀ ਕਥਾ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਹੱਥ ਫੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਨਾਲ਼ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਨਾਵਲ ਨੂੰ ਰੱਖਣ ਦਾ ਚਿੱਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਕਸ਼ਮੀਰ ਤੋਂ ਕਨੈਡਾ ਤੱਕ ਸਨਸਨੀ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਪਰ ਮੇਰੇ ਖਿਆਲ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੂਪ ਢਿੱਲੋਂ ਨੇ ਨਾਵਲ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੀ ਬਦਲ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਫਰ ਨੀਲਾ ਨੂਰ ਨਾਵਲ ਨਾਲ 2007 ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਹੁਣ ਉਹ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਦੇ ਮਹਾਨ ਲੇਖਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹੋਣ ਚ ਕਾਬਲ ਹੈ।

One Sohan Lal Suri was an official in the secretariat of Maharaja
RanjIt Singh, employed as the royal historiographer. He has left a
comprehensive history of the Sikhs, called the Umdat-ut- Ta warlkh. It
was subsequently published in five volumes by the British rulers of the
Punjab in the nineties of the last century. Incidentally, as it now
appears, this Sohan Lal Surl was, throughout, a secret paid agent of the
Hon'ble East India Company, with their headquarters at Calcutta,
receiving a high regular salarium of Rupees one hundred and twenty
five per mensem, which at the annexation of the Punjab, was commuted
into a pension, "eternal, to continue generation after generation",
but which eventually terminated when Punjab was partitioned
in 1947.

Maybe it shouldn't be such a surprise that the British had spies right at the heart of the Sikh court?

The reference to bare bottomed peasants I think is refering to the Sikhs who wore cholas and no pyjamas. I think the reference is to the lower half of their body not being covered.

In the above PDF go to page 17 and read on. There are only about 3 or 4 pages to read. It is a PDF of a translation of the original Persian written by a Kashmiri man who accompanied Nadir on his return from Delhi. He also does not name the Sikhs as such but just calls them the "inhabitants" of that country. It's very interesting to read how those "inhabitants" actually looted nadir's army on the Chenab.  Also it states that Zakaria Khan was with Nadir at the time of his return through Panjab, which has been recorded by Bhai Rattan Singh Bhangu in the famous conversation between the two which is often quoted by the Sikhs.

It took me about 2 years to fully quit this stuff, the only thing I wasn’t lazy about is waking up early and do Simran lol.. now I’m at a point where I have lots of free time, and I want to learn a lot about Sikhi, I know the basics (Many stories of Guru Nanak dev Ji, but not enough, stories of Guru Gobind Singh Ji but also not enough, what our Guru teaches, Avasthas, importance of Naam Simran and Nitnem, and other things). Here are the few things I’m looking for in a book:

They must be all in English

- itihas about Sikhi (lives of all the Gurus, battles, etc)

- commentary on bania (I know one about Japji Sahib: translated by kamalpreet singh pardesh)

- Anything that will help expand my knowledge of Sikhi.

Soft Target: How the Indian Intelligence Service Penetrated Canada is an investigative journalism work in the form of a book written by two Canadian reporters Zuhair Kashmeri (from The Globe and Mail) & Brian McAndrew (from Toronto Star). The authors define Soft Target as "an espionage term used for any country, institution or group of people very easy to penetrate and manipulate for subversive purposes"^[1] and argue that the Canadian Sikh community was a "Soft Target" of a covert operation by the Indian government during the 1980s. The book also makes a bold claim that Indian intelligence agencies not only penetrated the Sikh community in order to discredit them worldwide and halt the momentum of the demand of an independent Sikh state, but also manipulated the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS).^[1]

The 1989 edition is partitioned into 10 chapters.

India conspiracy[edit]

Inderjit Singh Reyat, the only person convicted of in the Air India Flight 182 bombing, is seen in the book being fed a story by Indian government agents. While Reyat's official testimony was contradictory, at one point Reyat claimed that a man staying at his home bought the tuner and took it when he left. Reyat said he did not know the man's name.^[2]

The book claims that within hours after the flight was blown up, the Globe and Mail received a call from Toronto Indian Consul General Surinder Malik with a detailed description of the bombing and the names of those he said were involved. Malik claimed his source was the Indian intelligence network, which had traced the methods of planting the bombs and the identity of the culprits.^[3]

Use by SIRC in Official Investigation[edit]

Canada's Security Intelligence Review Committee (SIRC) investigated Soft Target's description of events surrounding Flight 182 and concluded "the CSIS information it examined was insufficient to establish a conspiracy against Air India sponsored by foreign governments, in particular the Government of India."^[4]

Banning in India[edit]

The Telegraph reported that Soft Target was banned in India for "obvious reasons".^[5]

Here is a very interesting book on Sardar Hari Singh Nalwa and the times he lived in. Maybe due to my low standards, I find this to be a great example of how people should write about Sikh history in the English language: Inspiring, precise, short but yet deep, and using contemporary sources at all places. I hope to see more of this kind in the future.

This is Das Gur Katha, which was apparently written by a darbari kavi of dasmesh pita. Here is a description from thesikhencyclopedia site:

DAS GUR KATHA, by Karikan, one of the poets in attendance on Guru Gobind Singh, is a versified account, in an admixture of Braj, Hindi and Punjabi, of the events of the lives of the Ten Gurus. The only known manuscript of the work is present in the Panjab Public Library at Lahore, a copy of which was obtained for the library of the Khalsa College at Amritsar in 1956 and which was published with annotation in book form, in 1967, by the Khalsa Samachar, Amritsar. The colophon indicates the author`s name, but not the year of composition which from internal evidence is reckoned to be around AD 1699.

The work deals with events up to the creation of the Khalsa which took place during this year. The Katha comprises 234 stanzas and is written in different poetical metres such as Doha, Savaiyya, Chaupai, Pauri, Soratia and Arill. The post attributes the popularity of Gurmukhi characters to Guru Nanak who, according to him, communicated his message in a much easier language and form than those of the Vedas. Succession in Guru Nanak`s line was determined by qualities of humility and dedication and not by ties of blood. Guru Nanak`s spiritual successor was Guru Angad, his own devoted disciple. Especially detailed is the account of Guru Hargobind, Nanak VI, comprising 84 stanzas.

The poet hails him as one who combined the spiritual with the temporal and describes the battles he had to engage in. Among other details is the enumeration of Mughal provinces under Emperor Shah Jahan. The poet panegyrizes Guru Tegh Bahadur`s martyrdom which, as he says, he voluntarily embraced to uphold righteousness. The concluding twenty-one stanzas describe the cremation of Guru Tegh Bahadur`s severed head brought from Delhi to Anandpur by a disciple, Guru Gobind Singh`s investiture as successor to Guru Tegh Bahadur and creation of the Khalsa. Events are described with considerable embellishment, and no dates are given. Certain factual errors such as ascription to Guru Gobind Singh worship of the goddess Durga have also crept into the work.
