I think its bit of both- there is historical context to this. Kam1825 member on this forum can probably shed some more light on to this, i've messaged him on facebook to take a look at your topic here.

Where patanjali teaching of dharna- one pointedess, meditation-dhyaan-concentration and samadhi- gyan is mentioned among other limbs its compatible with Gurmat as those are universal teaching to realize atma-universal science of soul, where it talks about raw hatha yoga and parnayam without incorporation of Shabad or mantra, its not compatible.

For example- Sant jvala singh ji harkhowale did lot of simran abhyaas in his early life in which he incorporate techniques of hatha yoga too. So its not black and white.

Similiarly there is sakhi of mata ajeeto ji in soraj parkash granth -using meditation techniques -concentrate on third eye to see the future and to transcend, this technique is also mentioned in patanjali yog shastras.

I've find this topic similiar to vedant school of thought and gurmat. Here is what sant gyani gurbachan singh bhindranwale says on gurmat/gurbani position on vedas-

From Sikhi spiritual perspective, its already been established that enlightened being  is forever -AWAKE even during sleep as maharaj says:

Yeah toronto has some same issues, if seriously if sikhs wants to make parchar as main livelihood/full time as source of income where parcharik you have to feed your family too, you better off making youtube videos popular ones-like nanak naam has done (viritual parchar model) with donate page and also write a book on spirituality make money through that via wider audience than going to gurdwara with per-determined outcome of charavahas from sangat its just not realistic, steady or sustainable. We -canadian sikhs hardly donate. 

I remember i tried so hard with malton gurdwara committe years ago to get one of parcharaik to do parchar on stage at malton,  there is so much red tape getting parcharik to do parchar in gurdwara. They won't even agree paying half of his air fare let alone full. Now things have gotten better in malton but its same problem everywhere with canadian gurdwaras

In my opinion, knowing gurmukhi is nice to have but not prerequisite for spiritual journey especially since fairly accurate esoteric translations are available. But yes knowning gurmukhi is really good to have understand foundations of gurbani and sikhi.

Got it. After missionaries , some lawyer was handling operations and under him international students were allowed to stay free as long as they do full seva. Not sure what happened afterwards.

Psychology topic itself is very fascinating, if you do some deep study on it, you be astonished to come across - deep layers of mind and ego of human, how complex they are, how many zillions of defense mechanism humans use to cope for ego survival- to stand on always, how ego feels threatened, how ego always require sense of security, cause to represent, how it thrives on conflict and division, how conditioning forms. One can also get deep understanding on various religious groups, people, movements, social media groups, spiritual materialism etc etc
