Guru Arjan Dev Ji says on Ang 497
Remembering the Naam, the Name of the Lord, millions of lights appear, and the incomprehensible is understood.
simrat naam kot ujee-aaraa basat agochar soojhee. -
Just came to Ang 488 and thought it added to what Maha Singh was saying...
You can meet the Lord today, O Shaykh Fareed, if you restrain your bird-like desires which keep your mind in turmoil. ||1||Pause||
aaj milaavaa saykh fareed taakim koonjarhee-aa manhu machind-rhee-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o. -

Depends what you mean by desire?
I have a desire within me to be able to enjoy simran / naam jaap when I do it. Not be at the stage where I'm forcing myself to do it.
I have a desire to meet Waheguru. Not because I want anything but to just meet the "Almighty". Is that so wrong?
Without an element of desire of some kind, us beginners wouldn't do it. Hopefully when the prem/enjoyment for simran kicks in then it's a different story.
But agree with your point about going tot fast too quickly... Easier said then done though. We all look for shortcuts from time to time.. Myself included. Trying to be patient can be extremely difficult.

Just in case anyone else wants to have a listen you can find it on www.spotify.com plus loads of other material including kirtan.

Over the weekend I came across a audio recording of Yog Nidra by GuruMaa. According to her explanation it is supposed to take you into a semi sleep state where you will have wonderful experiences. So i started listening to the follow along instructions where your supposed to lie down and be still. Then she tells you to take your dhyaan to various points of the body starting on the right side working your way from each finger up arm then from the tip of the feet up the legs. Then things got interesting when she said now I want you to focus on the navel watching it go up and down as you breath counting down from 27. Then she made you focus on the heart doing the same count down. I was quite happy following along with this until it went to visualisations as she said various words you had to visualise/experience fully within the mind. She used words like candle, sky, sea, clouds, grass, path, cold, temple, walk up to the temple which has two steps. As you walk in right foot first then left. It was very specific as she described the inside that there was a Shiva statue with incense and roses placed before the statue. So I'm thinking I'll just substitute with my own Gurus image for visualisation purposes and replace the mantra she was using i.e. Om with Waheguru. She said bow down and make a prayer from something you want. In this deep state what ever you ask for is supposed to come manifest over time. Then she slowly withdraws you from this state.
I'm not disputing that this meditation technique might not be effective for some, but it made me question whether following these kinds of methods myself were actually distracting and confusing me from my original approach. Which was to focus on the Waheguru mantar and NO visualisations but to focus on the sound of the mantar only. She was invoking more thoughts where everything I had learned to date stated I should try and kill my thoughts and try and restrain my wondering mind using the Waheguru mantar. Think I will leave these kind of practices well alone. Although I think the initial stage of bringing your dhyaan inwards into the centre of the body from the arms and legs was usefull.
Lesson I learned from this: Stick to one method which feels right to you. Don't go trying one approach then another then another.... You will never make progress using any of them.

Nope nothing visual or auditory for me. Just blackness of the eyes and silence of the room. I am experiencing sensations down my spine. If there are Chakras I think this might be it. I can somewhat sense things in my pelvic region, my stomach region is active, my chest region becomes pretty active (and heart starts pumping or I notice it more), my throat becomes very tight and lots of pressure there. My forehead is the most activ, it feels like something is applying a lot of pressure there. And then I have these tingling sensations at the top of my head, sometimes there is pressure. Body also heats up a bit. Becomes more than relaxed. But at the time time becomes full of energy and sometimes start shivering and shaking.
My experience of the Anhat (unstruck) is blissful silence. To call it silence does not do it justice.
Veera just seeing if we can compare notes if there was something common in our experience. I haven't had the sounds and stuff that you have experienced.
Thanks for sharing your experience with us Bhagat Singh Ji. May Waheguru Ji bless us all with the deeper intensity of his naam simran.

Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji says on Ang 456
Ang 456
Make the effort, O very fortunate ones, and meditate on the Lord, the Lord King.

O Nanak, remembering Him in meditation, you shall obtain total peace, and your pains and troubles and doubts shall depart.

Chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord of the Universe; don`t be lazy.

With each and every breath, worship the Lord in adoration; meditate on the Lord God in your mind and with your mouth. (I think the reference to man mukhee refers to the mouth of the mind i.e. internally with sass sass)
saas saas araaDh har har Dhi-aa-ay so parabh man mukhee.
Prays Nanak: may I meditate on the Lord`s lotus feet, and not be lazy in chanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord of the Universe. ||1||

I have to die in that shabad. Kill the mind/thoughts completely as guru ji instructs on ang 429.
Ego, self-centeredness, excessive anger and pride are the lot of mankind.
ha-umai mayraa jaat hai at kroDh abhimaan.
If one dies in the Word of the Shabad, then he is rid of this, and his light is merged into the Light of the Lord God. ||2||

Came across the pangti which got me thinking....
Meditating on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, with intuitive ease and poise, spiritual wisdom is revealed. ||1||
sehjay naam Dhi-aa-ee-ai gi-aan pargat ho-ay. ||1||
True spiritual knowledge is going to come itself when we do abhyaas slowly, but this could also mean when we enter shej samadhi which is really high avasta.

My Guru is telling me to do one thing and one thing only and I do so many others..... Waheguru Waheguru Waheguru Waheguru
Ang 426
They are occupied with the Naam, and only the Naam; they deal only in the Naam.

Deep within their hearts is the Naam; upon their lips is the Naam; they contemplate the Word of God, and the Naam.

They praise the Naam, forever and ever, and through the Naam, they obtain the Mansion of the Lord`s Presence.

Through the Naam, their hearts are illumined, and through the Naam, they obtain honor.

Through the Naam, peace wells up; I seek the Sanctuary of the Naam.

O Nanak, everything is under the influence of the Naam; by perfect good destiny, a few obtain it.

Just read rest of Ang 425. Do I really need to read anymore? How many more ways does my mind need to be told to do as much simran as I can. Why am I still so lazy and why does my mind look for other things to do instead? Why have I already wasted so much time in my life? Got a long hard battle ahead of me. Only way I'm going to win this game is if he so wishes it and does his kirpa...
Sri Guru Amar Das Ji says
Everything is within the home of your own self; there is nothing beyond it.
gharai andar sabh vath hai baahar kichh naahee.
By Guru`s Grace, it is obtained, and the doors of the inner heart are opened wide. ||1||

He opens the doors deep within, and through the Eyes of Divine Vision, beholds the treasure of liberation. ||2||

The appraisers cherish the commodity of the Name; they obtain understanding from the Guru.

The wealth of the Naam is priceless; how few are the Gurmukhs who obtain it. ||4||

Searching outwardly, what can anyone find? The commodity is deep within the home of the self, O Siblings of Destiny.

The entire world is wandering around, deluded by doubt; the self-willed manmukhs lose their honor.

The false one leaves his own hearth and home, and goes out to another`s home.

LOL! funnily enough...I had asked the same question once!
It won't go on outside of your meditative state.
That's not entirely true from what I hear, eventually you will be able to hear it 24-7. For the past few days mine has been on loads. I thought it would also manifest when you go internal and begin to close off the nine gates. But mine just starts even when I have my eyes open and my mind is still. Sometimes I wake up in the night and its happening. Just wish it was intoxicating to draw me to listen to it. I will see if I can post some relevant pages from Discourses from the Beyond which will shed some light.

I justed wanted to write a little example to help understand what I believe Guru ji is trying to instruct us with, because if you learn you apply this jugti then you watch how much more stable you mind becomes. You will then notice how when you don’t, you will automatically see how it breaks your inner peace.
I am sure you have heard countless saakhi’s of bhagats, mahapursh calling everyone they see WaheGuru. When I first heard this I found it a little strange, why on earth are they calling a person waheguru. I have even been to gurdwaras where this is normal practise. First I thought maybe they are japping naam after ever little phrase. Then when I started listening more and reading SGGS the light dawned.
These people are trying to develop what I believe is called bibek bhuddie. As guru ji instructs us to do in the pangti’s above and probably countless others. If you train your mind to see Waheguru in everyone who will you hate? who will you curse? who will you swear at? Who will you do nindiya off?
Then this is not just limited to people, look at Waheguru’s whole creation. Waheguru is inside that too but we just don’t have that divine sight to see his parkash in it yet, myself included. But slowly when you start bringing this line of thought into your mind you develop more peace/shanty of mind because you don’t want to hurt anyone or do their nindeya because indirectly your only adding more sins into your basket. And boy do we have millions of them already. This is how guru ji is instructing us how to conquer Krodh and the other vices gurbani talks about.
The day the penny dropped for me, I was waling down an escalator and below I saw hundreds of people, and the more I looked at them the more I smiled and just said Waheguru. Then I walked home I saw a tree and I looked at that tree and said to myself guru ji your in their too but one day please show yourself in your true light.
The more I remember to put this at the forefront of my mind, when ever a confrontation starts I have now come to hate it and think this person is has lost it and I wont let him destroy my inner piece which with his kirpa I am trying to so hard to develop. Just silently start japping waheguru in your mind and do not be drawn into any kind of confrontation. You see how most times the situation just dissolves itself.
If the other person doesn't stop, just step back with nimerta and say "Tuwno Jaadha Patha Ji" and walk away.
Dhan Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
Waheguru.
Appologies for my spelling mistakes...

Only vision or sound as well?
What about the 'tunnel like' appearance after a couple of minutes? What does that mean?
I had always thought that the sounds that start playing according to the Waheguru Mantar 'vidhi' I chant, were made up by my mind. I kind of wished for it to go away (if it was my mind's play)... When it kept repeating every time I sat, I kinda felt really down because of my 'assumption' (?) of my mind doing it.
Reading your post has made me think about it again. I used to always think that the 'anhad shabad' would start suddenly and not with a faint sound in the beginning.
This is the very problem I have come to realise, no one is willing to tell us when we are hearing the anhad bani and how it manifests. I seriously recommend you read Discourses on the Beyond volume 3. Which briefly mentions visions and sounds.
From my own limited knowledge all I know is listen with 100% attention on the waheguru mantar to stop your thoughts and keep you mind in check and stop it from wondering, This is what i'm reading again and again in SGGS. When the anhad shabad begins to be heard then you focus on that which will take more effort. If your seeing visions and your mind is engaging and your thinking wow look at that then your mind is playing tricks on you and your kidding yourself that you have managed to still your mind. Place 100% faith in Waheguru shabad to take you where it wants to. Guru will take you when the time is right. The only place it will take you is back from where it came, i.e. Waheguru. But once again I can't say this enough you have to learn to still your thoughts. I can't even do that properly myself yet. Don't force yourself through tunnels unless some abyaasi pursh who you place full trust in instructs you to do so.
Even I'm confused about the anhad shabad, sometimes it gets really loud and sometimes I can hardly hear it. At which point I revert to the Waheguru mantar. Also if this thing becomes very loud how will I function day to day. Someone is talking to me and I can hear this sound in my ears. lol
The only nashani I know of for dasaam duar entry is anhad shabad will be heard there and also you will begin to smell a beautiful fragerance. Everthing else is just an illusion of maya to distract you. I hope someone with more experience will respond to you if they can help. As I read SGGS and something along these lines appears which might help us, I will post.
The problem I face, and I'm sure others out there also, is that we have been given too much knowledge of different techniques. Rather than starting from the beginning and progressing we know focus here focus there, you will see this you will see that. It all in our mind now so it won't be difficult for the mind to say let me give them what they are expecting. That is why again and again we are told just focus on the shabad only and you can't go wrong. tbh i'm not helping by posting my experience because i'm adding more fuel into our already over active minds. Become 0 then guru ji will fill you up with true knowledge which is practical not theoretical from books. I should really take my own advice because I am just as bad. We are too keen to know jugti's techniques, what will happen, i want this i want that. If the shabad does its magic we will be completely dead mentally when we meet waheguru, so any hopes, wishes and desires will be gone. Then at that point you will ask for TRUE NAAM and that ONLY. Even I don't know what that could possibly be.
Hope that helps, Ji.

I'm really beginng to feel I shouldn't be writing all this stuff because I don't want be held responsible for leading anyone up the wrong path. If I say anything wrong or you guys out there feel too much is being said, please let me know and I will stop.
I read a pungti not long ago that said, first liberate yourself before you try and liberate others........ I am not trying to liberate anyone but merely inspire others to walk the path as I'm trying to do so. If you guys make it to waheguru first please let me him know his Sikh is trying to find him and be in his charan.

Has anyone come across a proper 'list' of what happens on the journey of meditation? I believe it must be different for everyone according to their past lives etc. but has any mahapurakh clarified about this?
(Also, I don't mean 'Naam di Avastha' as Baba Hari Singh Randhawe wale have explained...but actually about what happens...as in what one begins to see and hear.)
There is a little bit explained in Discources on the Beyond books written by Sant Waryam Singh. But it consists more of instructions of how to progress... I have heard that nothing beats having the sangat of someone who has actually gone through the stages because there will be many hurdles along the way and Maya will try its absolute best to hold you back or distract you on your path. For example when you start seeing lights of the different chakras/taats poeple can get lost by just looking at them thinking they made it. I don't even have the answer because I haven't seen any lights yet. I think you need to remain focused on the dhun because shabad is higher than taats/colours. Any kind of vision is considered maya and to be ignored. But to contradict that how will one know when Waheguru is staring one in the face? I guess only time will tell.
May Waheguru guide us all safely to his pavitar charan...
On this marg we have to be patient and persevere on, just have faith and keep walking. Myself included.
