  1. i highly respect balpreet singh, but i think he should have been discreet with his srisahib (and possibly go with a smaller size)...at the end of the day, we have to take this kirpan issue bit by bit to make it acceptable, it won't happen with 3 foot kirpans right off the bat.

first we need to get acceptance of having the right to carry 6 and 9 inch kirpans.....once Canadians have been given time to digest that much, then we can move on to bigger and sharper sir sahibs ;)

this is why Guruji tells us to understand Rajneeti (politics)...(highly ironic since the singh is a law student). we can't go charging into this kirpan debate which is a battle even more difficult than the turban. our parents generation fought for the turban, i think our generation will have to fight for the kirpan.

but i don't want to slate balpreet singh, he's our brother and we need to keep his back. he's just trying to impress our father, Guru Gobind Singh ji.

  2. Just wondering what's a purpose behind cocunut ? note i m not saying putting cocunut is bad but i just need to know the reason behind this ritual.

cocunut symbolizes the offering of one's life (specifically, giving one's head).

the 5 paisey symbolize the offering of the wealth of all the worlds.

    forget what tilak symbolized

  3. Dr Sangat Singh indicated in his book “Sikhs in History†that Amar Shaheed Sant Jarnail Singh Bindrawale’s dying words were of a similar tone “Tell Indira she is a bitch†(Indira kuthi di dhi hai)

    Just curious...

    1. what are Dr Sangat Singh's sources?

    2. when exactly would these "dying words" have been said, and to whom?

But I agree with others, cursing is not a good thing, especially after 21 years…seems almost pointless and more like misdirected anger.

I could understand if this protest occurred in 1984...I’m sure the calmest saints may have cursed IG. And we all know what happens when a saint says something, even in a moment of anguish or anger.

  4. Nice point hpp :D

But I personally don’t feel I’m disrespecting Maharaj using abbreviations, it’s just for quicker writing that’s all.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but even in Gurbani, Guru ji uses just “mama†to abbreviate for “mahala†at times. In other cases “Guru†is abbreviated using “Gurâ€.

Also, I would understand that if we were to write a formal essay of sorts, or some other form of scholarly material, then using abbreviations does seem inappropriate, but for these types of forums, I think it’s acceptable.

    Just an opinion.

  5. Sikhs need to go the legal route.

Being a minority, and that too a very visible minority, they should aim at bringing in legislation that prevents misrepresentation, or great offense, to the community. Perhaps people will find a way to work around this in the name of freedom of speech, but I think with proper legislation we can blunt their efforts to a large extent.

Boycotting the movie will have little to no effect, and neither will protests because in this case the media is siding with the Indian film industry for the most part. Even after countless protests after so many of these incidents there still isn’t a voice emerging from the Indian media in support of Sikhs. I remember reading articles in support of “Sardarji jokes†and I have yet to come across an editorial in support of Sikh views.

In my opinion, the best route would be the legal route so it hits the filmmakers where it hurts. The public perception is that of indifference when to comes to this issue, so winning public sympathy (which in itself requires assistance from media) is very difficult.

  6. Also by keeping the languages to Aramaic, Hebrew and Latin, Mel Gibson clearly sent out this message: it is not God who should adapt to us but us who should submit to God. A message that applies to us as well: It is us who have to adapt to Sikhi NOT the opposite.

    Good analysis
