Maharaja Jassa Singh Ramgarhia (1723 - 1803 A.D) Before Guru Gobind Singh Ji left for his heavenly abode he appointed Baba Banda Singh Bahadur, as the general of the Khalsa. He Strengthened and developed the Sikhs into a powerful force. The mugal rulers could not tolerate the rise of the Khalsa and retaliated which brought severe hardship to the Sikhs. Dal Khalsa and the rakhi system them emerged followed by the formation of the Sikh Misls, not only to establish the Sikh power in the Punjab but also to defend faith and their very existence. After a century and a half of the post Guru period, the Sikh history was dominated by the five warriors from the above Misls, namely, Maharaja Jassa Singh Ramgarhia, Jassa Singh Ahluwaila, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Akali Phula Singh and Hari Singh Bhangi. Maharaja Jassa Singh Ramgarhia was in 1723 at a village called Icholgil in Lahore, Punjab. In addition to being the leader of the Ramgarhia mils he was a brave soldier, a farsighted states man and the first Sikh Maharaja among the Misls. Under his leadership, Ramgarh, a fortress at Amritsar was built, to defend the holiest Sikh Shrine, Sri Harmander Sahib - The Golden Temple. In 1783 he captured Delhi and brought the seat of authority of the mugal rulers to Amritsar. It is set in front portion of the Ramgarhia Bunga. Futhurmore, he made Sri Hargobindpur as the capital of his territory and minted Nanakshahi coins. The Delhi Gurdwara's were repaired and extensively restored by him. Maharaja Jassa Singh Ramgarhia was affable, intelligent, morally upright and a deeply religious person. Whenever there was a threat to the Sikh Panth, he was the first to accept the challenge. Moreover he was an excellent horse rider, shooter, archer and one of the bravest Sikh barons of his time, His father taught his language skills, use of weapons and relgious practices. With him as the leader, the Sikhs became champions of freedom in age of oppression and tyranny, enforced by the Mugal rulers. The Sikhs should be proud of the contributions made by Maharaja Jassa Singh Ramgarhia and "Ramgarhias" in general to uplift the history of the Sikhs. It may be mentioned that "Ramgarhia" is not a caste. However, many sikhs proudly call themselves "Ramgarhia" in rememberance of a famous ancestors, "Maharaja Jassa Singh Ramgarhia". Satnaam Waheguru
