  5. guru fateh ji, Be Happy Now One very respected singh tell this one be happy now it make your past happy - it make future happy this one ask how now? do that? Let's see if I got this right. Be unhappy think about past - still unhappy be happy think about past - happy unhappy now when future come- you think about this past - is unhappy be happy now - when future come think about now (the past) remember happy something like that...waheguru ji 15.14 Why be scared? Guru Arjun Dev ji, humbly, lovingly, like a child in his father's laps sings: Merey Ram Rai My King Waheguru ji, Thoo Santa Ka You belong to the Saints Sant Terey and the Saints belong to You. Terey sevak ko Your servant has Bhau kich nhee no fear at all, Jumm na avai nerey Jumm, the God of Death, does not come near. So my saintly friends, why be frightened of anything? Why Worry? Khalsa Jee, Why worry? Read what Guru Arjan Dev Jee writes : Bazigar jaise bazi paee........ As the juggler enacts his show- And exhibits tricks of various forms; Then removing his disguise he gathers up his exhibition; So too when creation is gathered up (destroyed), only the Supreme One remains. How many forms were made visible and demolished! Where are they gone? Where did they come from? Innumerable waves rise from the water; Many ornaments are made from gold; Numerous are the forms in which the seed sprouts: When the fruit ripens, The seed reappears. In so many vessels of water the very same sky is reflected; As the vessel is broken, the same Light remains. While doubt, avarice, delusion last, Evils of Maya dominate the mind: When doubt is dispelled, The self sees only the Supreme. He is eternal, and knows not destruction. Nothing is born; nothing ever dies. The perfect Master has removed the filth of my egoism; With this, says Nanak, I have attained the supreme state. (Raga Suhi, Guru Arjan Dev Jee, p. 736)

  7. fateh to all, Continued from last posting.--------- June 03, 1984 All communications including phone lines to and from Punjab are cut. Road blocks prevent anyone from entering or leaving Punjab and all journalists are expelled from Punjab. A total curfew is imposed and as many as 10,000 pilgrims are trapped inside the temple complex. Milk vendors from the villages who supply milk to the city of Amritsar are shot dead for violating the curfew orders. Operation Bluestar: Sikh homeland occupied by Indian Army. Curfew declared and undeclared Martial law promulgated. The Indian army occupied the whole of the Sikh homeland begining 9pm. Curfew declared and undeclared Martial law promulgated. Jarnail Singh Bhindranwalae gave his final interview to the jounalists. Today was the martyrdom day of Guru Arjan Dev Ji: and the day the Indian Army chose to surround Guru Arjan's temple. All the phone lines, water, and electricity supply to the complex were cut off. Jarnail Singh appealed to his Singhs not to give up their arms. Amrik Singh, General Shahbeg Singh, and Giani Puran Singh were also present at that time. Whole Punjab was sealed from the rest of the world and a total blackout imposed
  8. guru fateh June comemorates the lethal attack on ………….. Harminder Sahib and Sikhs..in 1984……… …………………………..Forgive but don’t forget Read on BLUESTAR OPERATION is the code name for the June 1984 attack on Sri Harimandir Sahib, Amritsar, by the Indian Armed Forces. This attack was conducted under the pretext of flushing out terrorists but was designed for maximum damage. The attack took place on the day of Guru Arjan Dev Ji’s martydom day . Further this operation was sanctioned under the direct orders of Indira Gandhi (then prime minister at the time) and Zail Singh (then President). The Golden Temple Complex was attacked by the Indian Armed Forces using tanks, helicopters, and other heavy artillery, under the command of Major General Kuldip Singh Brar. Sri Akal Takhat was desecrated during this attack. Sri Darbar Sahib sustained at least 300 bullet holes. Thousands of innocent people were murdered in cold blood. Their fault? They were attending the Martyrdom day of Guru Arjan Dev Ji. The brave GurSikh soldiers in the Akal Takhat, numbering about 250, gave extremely tough resistance to the Indian army. However, their resistance was no match to the large number of tanks, helicopters, bombs, and other heavy artillery that destroyed the Akal Takhat. The whole Sikh nation rose as a whole to protest against this ghastly attack. Thousands of Sikhs were martyred in the holy precincts of Darbar Sahib. Many gave their lives in attempts to reach for Darbar Sahib's protection. All roads to Amritsar were blocked. Every Sikh approaching these blockades were asked to remove their kirpan and turban. Those refusing were immediately killed or arrested. Anyone with blue or saffron turbans were particularly targeted and killed. Those arrested were blind folded and their hands tied behind their backs with their own turbans. Arrested Sikhs were packed in groups of 60-70 in small rooms with liitle room for any mobility. In protest, many respected Sikhs returned their Padam Bushan medals/honors bestowed upon them by the Indian government and sacrificed their high positions. Several Sikh Army personal deserted their posts in protest and marched straight to protect Darbar Sahib. However, Indira Ghandhi did receive retribution for her black deeds on Oct. 31st, that same year. -------continued
  9. Waheguru JI Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh Continued From Post-2------ The Emperor Jahangir addressed the Guru, “Thou art a saint, a great teacher, and a holy man; You look on all, rich and poor, alike. It was therefore, not proper for you to give money to my enemy Khusro." The Guru replied, “I regard all people, whether Hindu or Musalman, rich or poor, friend or foe, as equals; and it is on this account that I gave your son some money for his journey, and not because he was in opposition to you. If I had not assisted him in his forlorn condition, and so shown some regard for the kindness of thy father, Emperor Akbar to myself, all men would have despised me for my heartlessness and ingratitude, or they would have said that I was afraid of you. This would have been unworthy of a follower of Guru Nanak." The Guru's reply did not sooth Jahangir's feelings and he ordered him to pay two lakhs of rupees (two hundred thousand rupees), and also to erase the hymns in his Granth which were opposed to the Hindu and Muslim religions. The Guru replied, "Whatever money I have is for the poor, the friendless and the stranger. If you ask for money, you may take whatever I have; but if you ask for it by way of fine I shall not give you even a penny, because a fine is imposed on the wicked worldly persons and not on priests and saints. As regarding the erasure of hymns in the Adi Granth, I cannot erase or alter an iota. I am a worshipper of the Immortal God. There is no monarch save Him; and what He revealed to the Gurus, from Guru Nanak to Guru Ram Das, and afterwards to myself, is written in the holy Granth. The hymns contained in the Adi Granth are not disrespectful to any Hindu incarnation or any Mohammadan prophet. It is certainly stated that prophets, priests, and incarnations are the handiwork of the Immortal God, Whose limit none can find. My main object is to spread the truth and the destruction of falsehood; and if, in pursuance to this objective, this perishable body is to depart, I shall account it great good fortune." The Emperor left and the Guru was placed under the surveillance of Chandu. Some writers say that Guru Arjan's execution was nothing except usual punishment of revenue defaulter. It seems that these writers are totally ignorant of Sikh tradition. When the Sikhs of Lahore came to know about the fine of two lakhs of rupees, they decided to raise the money to discharge the Guru's obligation of fine. The Guru issued a stern warning to his Sikhs that whosoever contributed to pay the fine imposed on him, would not be his Sikh. It was a matter of principle as mentioned in the Guru's reply above, and not a matter of two lakhs of rupees which could have been collected in twinkling of an eye. Fines are for thieves, robbers, slanderers and the wicked. Men devoted to religion did not belong to that category. It is, therefore, baseless to say that Guru's execution was usual punishment of revenue defaulter. The Qazis and Brahmans offered alternatives to the Guru to exchange death for expunging the alleged objectionable passages in Adi Granth and inserting the praises of Mohammad and of the Hindu deities. The Guru did not budge from his position. Guru Arjan was made to sit on the red hot iron pan and burning sand was poured over his bare body. He was seated in red-hot caldron, and was bathed in boiling water. Guru's body was burning and was full of blisters. His friend and devotee, Mian Mir, a Muslim saint, rushed to see him. When Mian Mir saw the ghastly scene, he cried out and said, “O Master! I cannot bear to see these horrors inflicted on thee. If you permit me, I would demolish this tyrant rule (Mian Mir is said to have possessed supernatural powers at that time)." The Guru smiled and asked Mian Mir to look towards the skies. It is said that Mian Mir saw Angels begging the Guru's permission to destroy the wicked and the proud. The Guru addressed Mian Mir, “Mian Mir, you are perturbed too soon. This is the Will of my Master (God), and I cheerfully submit and surrender to His Sweet Will." The Guru repeated and exemplified in action the meaning of this verse: "Tera kia meetha lagei Har Nam padarath Nanak mangei." (Asa Mohalla 5, p-394) 'Sweet be Thy Will, my Lord Nanak beseecheth the gift of Nam.' (Translation of the above) The Guru bore all this torture with equanimity and never uttered a sigh or a groan. The Guru was unruffled! The Guru remained calm and unperturbed like a sea! The Guru was in Absolute Bliss! This was the wonder of the Lord- an unparallel example in the history of mankind. Mian Mir asked, why was he enduring the suffering at the hands of his vile sinners when he possesseth superpowers? The Guru replied, “I bear all this torture to set an example to the Teachers of True Name, that they may not lose patience or rail at God in affliction. The true test of faith is the hour of misery. Without examples to guide them, ordinary persons' minds quail in the midst of suffering." Upon this Mian Mir departed commending the Guru's fortitude and singing his praises. The Guru was again addressed to comply with the demands of his enemies. When he was threatened with further torture, he replied, O fools! I shall never fear any torture. This is all according to God's Will, any torture wherefore affordeth my pleasure." He is said to have uttered this Sabad: "The egg of superstition hath burst; the mind is illumined; The Guru hath cut the fetters off the feet and freed the captive. My transmigration is at an end. The heated caldron hath become cold; the Guru hath given the cooling Name. Since the holy man hath been with me, Death's myrmidons, who lay in wait for me, have left me. I have been released from him who restrained me; what shall the judge do to me now? The load of karma is removed; I am freed therefrom. From the sea I have reached the shore; the Guru hath done me this favor. True is my place, true my seat, and truth I have made my special object. Truth is the capital; truth the stock-in-trade which Nanak hath put into his house." (Maru Mohalla 5, p-1002) Chandu thought to suffocate him in a fresh cowhide, in which he was to be sewn up. Instead the Guru asked for a bath in Ravi river which flowed embracing the walls of Lahore city. Chandu revelled at the thought that the Guru's body full of blisters, would undergo greater pain when dipped in cold water and he permitted him to bathe in the river. The soldiers were sent to escort the Guru. The Master's disciples saw him leaving. He looked at them still forbidding any action. He said, “Such is the Will of my God, submit to the Divine Will, move not, stand calm against all woes." Crowds watched the Master standing in water and having a dip. Lo! The light blended with Light and the body was found nowhere. Hail to the Master! Thou art Wonderful- Martyr, the greatest. Thou art the Greatest! SALUTE TO THE MIGHTY KING! In Sikhism there is the same emphasis on Raza also called Bhana (God's Will) as there is on renunciation in ascetic cults and creeds. It is a state of mind which understands clearly the Divine Will. The doctrine of Bhana is the acceptance of the Will of God which is the core of Sikh faith. An enlightened mind lives according to inner dictates of His Hukam (order). It is a dedicated submission and infinite patience to accept His Will. Guru Arjan sowed the seed of martyrdom which largely flourished after him and became the heritage of the Sikhs. To justify and substantiate that prophets and saints can conquer death and suffering, two Sikh Gurus and countless Sikhs have faced martyrdom. They did so to show to the world their belief in the eternity of their spirit and the fearlessness they acquired in the love of God. It is a lesson to the world that true devotion to God transcends the sorrow of life. The Master is not indifferent to the values and to the suffering of the virtuous at the hands of the wicked. To save and defend is His Characteristic (Birdh). He cares for devotion of His devotees and guards His prophets and saints from misery unless He wills and desires that their agonizing experience and painful martyrdom should serve higher purpose. This was the fourth day of the light half of the month of Jeth, Sambat 1663 (May 30, 1606 A.D.). Dhan Guru Arjan Sahib Ji Maharaj Extracted from the book, SIKH RELIGION Sikh Missionary Center
  10. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh Continued From Post-1 -------------- The Emperor Akbar died soon after and was succeeded by his son Jahangir. Akbar had nominated his grandson Khusro in supersession of his son. Khusro claimed Punjab and Afghanistan which his father, Jahangir, was unwilling to concede to him. Jahangir ordered Khusro's arrest but the latter escaped and went towards Afghanistan. On his way he visited the Guru at Tarn Taran and told him that he was unfriended, needy, poor and had no travelling expenses. So he begged the Guru for pecuniary assistance. Khusro had previously visited the Guru accompanying his grandfather Akbar and was, therefore, very well known to him. Secondly in Guru's house everybody- friend or foe, king or pauper, is treated equally. The Guru knew what was coming, but seeing the plight of the prince, he gave Khusro financial help. Khusro was, however, seized while crossing Jehlum, by the imperial forces and was brought in chains to his father. Prithia continued to retain the assistance and co-operation of Sulhi Khan against the Guru. On the pretext of collecting revenue in the Punjab, Sulhi Khan obtained leave from the Emperor. On his way he visited Prithia at his village Kotha where they concocted plans for the Guru's destruction. In the meantime, however, Prithia took Sulhi Khan to show his brick-kilns, where Sulhi Khan met with his accidental death by his sudden fall in the live brick-kiln. Prithia was very much saddened at the death of his ally in evil. In those circumstances Chandu came to his rescue and filled the gap. Chandu wrote to Prithia to use his influence to bring his daughter's alliance with Har Gobind. Prithia was ready to assist Chandu in his nefarious designs against the Guru. He wrote back that the Guru who had deprived him of his right over Guruship, was already his enemy; and he would only be too happy to assist in meting him with adequate punishment. In his letter he begged Chandu to use his influence with the Emperor to bring the Guru to justice. So they both concocted a plan to induce the Emperor by some means to visit Punjab where they would have an opportunity to enter into some conspiracy against the Guru. Chandu's scheme was successful and in a short period of time the Emperor came to Punjab. He told the Emperor that Guru Arjan was acting as his rival in Punjab by entertaining thieves and exercising independent authority. Upon this the Emperor sent an order to the Guru through Sulabi Khan, the nephew of late Sulhi Khan, to abstain from such practices. On his journey to Amritsar, Sulabi Khan confronted with some Pathans and was killed. When Chandu heard the death of Sulabi Khan, he convinced the Emperor that it had been done through the machinations of the Guru. He added that he had done many such misdeeds. For example the Guru had deprived his elder brother Prithi Chand of his rights over Guruship and had also endeavored to deprive Hindus and Muslims of their religions. The Emperor immediately sent for Prithia who was overjoyed with the invitation. He made preparations to go to the Emperor but after the dinner he got a cramp in his stomach and died the same night. Meharban, son of Prithia, wasted no time after the death of his father in informing Chandu who in turn informed the Emperor that the Guru had blessed Khusro and had promised that he would become the Emperor. The Emperor was also notified that the Pundits and the Qazis were enraged at the compilation of Adi Granth which blasphemed the worship rules of the Hindus and the prayer and fasting of the Muslims. By such accusations, Chandu induced the Emperor to summon Guru Arjan. Emperor Jahangir writes in his autobiography: "In Goindwal, which is on the river Biyah (Beas), there was a Hindu named Arjan, in the garments of sainthood and sanctity so much so, that he had captured many of the simple- hearted of the Hindus and even the ignorant and foolish followers of Islam, by his ways and manners, and they had loudly sounded the drum of his holiness. They called him Guru and from all sides stupid people crowded to worship and manifest complete faith in him. For three or four generations (of spiritual successors) they kept this shop warm. Many times it occurred to me to put a stop to this vain affair or to bring him into the assembly of the people of Islam. At last, when Khusro passed along this road, this insignificant fellow proposed to wait upon him. Khusro happened to halt at the place where he was, and he came out and did homage to him. He behaved to Khusro in certain special ways, and made on his forehead a finger-mark of saffron which the Indians call Qashqa and is considered propitious. When this came to my ears and I fully knew his heresies, I ordered that he should be brought into my presence and having handed over his houses, dwelling places, and children to Murtaza Khan (Sheikh Farid Bukhari) and having confiscated his property I ordered that he should be put to death with tortures." The following events led to the Guru's summons by the Emperor resulting in martyrdom: To begin with, it was his elder brother, Prithi Chand who devoted his whole life to harm the Guru in every possible way. Secondly Chandu's animosity over his daughter's non-alliance with the Guru's son, is considered the main fuel. These men with jealousies in their hearts, concocted the real story of Khusro to rouse the ire of Emperor Jahangir which added fuel to the blazing fire. Along with these circumstances Guru's increasing influence to convert crowds of Hindus and Muslims, created a stir in the minds of the Pundits (Brahmans) and the Qazis (Muslim priests). The compilation of Adi Granth was considered a serious blow to other religions. Through all these circumstances Guru Arjan fell a victim to the bigotry and inhumanity of the Mohammadan Emperor. Before his departure to Lahore, the Guru appointed his son, Har Gobind as his successor and gave suitable instructions. He took five Sikhs, Bhai Bidhi Chand, Bhai Langaha, Bhai Piara, Bhai Jetha, and Bhai Pirana, with him. Some writers say that Emperor Jahangir had gone to Kashmir before the arrival of the Guru in Lahore. Part 2 - To be continued... 11. guru fateh ji Some men take their beards very seriously. No, we're not talking about the 16-year-old stumped by a soul patch. We're talking about men whose religious beliefs encourage them to let their beards grow. Hair long has been associated with divinity, wisdom, masculinity and humility. Religious practice often found in facial hair a way to set believers apart from nonbelievers. Today, whether a man has a beard can still spark controversy. What kind of message does a beard send about innocence, guilt, stereotypes and political correctness? Without drawing any conclusions about what a beard or long hair may or may not mean to the man who wears it, here is a quick look at what six faiths believe about beards and letting one's hair grow. Judaism Orthodox and Hasidic Jews wear beards and, sometimes, long side-curls, called payot. Leviticus 19:27 forbids them to round off the corners of their temples or "mar" the edges of their beards. The latter is equated with shaving, but some Jews believe that scissors and scissor-action shavers may be used. In some circles, a beard is a sign of mourning, grown from Passover to Shavuot on behalf of the Jewish people. Christianity God is often depicted as having a flowing white beard, and Jesus, most often, has a darker one. No eternal, blanket understanding about facial hair arose, but smaller groups, such as the Orthodox churches, developed traditions about men keeping beards. In the modern world, men may or may not adhere to them. Some groups ascribe particular meaning to beards. Amish men, for example, may grow beards as a sign of being married. Just a beard, though -- a mustache is seen as frivolous or militaristic. Islam The Prophet Muhammad had a beard and prescribed them for his male followers. Different styles of beards are allowed, and some reflect cultural differences. Muslims may disagree on whether it is permissible to trim a beard, but Muhammad said a mustache should be trimmed so that it does not get wet when a man takes a drink of water. Cutting hair is a different story. Muhammad himself had long or short hair at different times of his life. Buddhists A goal is to dissociate from the material world and its distractions, and hair is often a subject of pride or vanity. Buddhist monks and nuns may shave their heads as an outward sign of renouncing the world. Shaven heads and faces are associated with cleanliness. Some Western teachers avoid shaved heads because they can create discomfort in the general population. Sikhism Devout Sikhs, both men and women, let their hair grow, and men allow their beards to grow. Both are required as signs of the Khalsa, a fellowship of those who "belong to the divine." The rule affirms their belief that God made men and women perfectly, with no changes necessary. When the Khalsa arose in 1699, it set Sikhs apart and encouraged them to stand up against oppression and injustice. Rastafarians Their characteristic dreadlocks express their pride in African hair and are allowed to grow free-form, uncombed and untreated after washing. They are in keeping with a Hebrew Bible, or Old Testament, law for Nazarites -- a group of people who are consecrated or set apart. Numbers 6:5 says, "No razor shall come upon the head ... they shall be holy; they shall let the locks of the head grow long."
  12. guru fateh to all, i got this in my mail. i m posting this mail in general section so that all the sangat can read it. i request all the sangat reading this message to write for true stories that happened in their life. ----------------------------------- The Cure Of All Ills Is Naam - "Sarab Rog Ka Aukhad Naam" true incidents: Blood Pressure Once I had blood pressure 180/95 and chlestrol over 200 I japped naam and now it's 120/80 and 139. Another time I had a dental appointment. for root canal problems..My dilema was whether to go to the dentist or listen to a Sant at the Gurdwara. I decided to go to the Gurdwara. Amazingly, the pain disappeared for over a year, the tooth still had the problem but there was no pain. I guess I did not Jap Naam enough for it to completely get better. On another occasion I japped naam for a while. When I went for my eye test, the optician asked `What did you do? Your eye sight has improved.!' I didn't tell him, but my daughter sitting next to me smiled. I could go on, let us stop here. Dhan Guru Nanak Dhan Gur Sikhi. Vaheguru. . .Vaheguru. . . Vaheguruuuuu. . . . High Fever "I became ill with quite an intense fever for a couple of weeks. It was quite horrible. I could only sleep for a few minutes and then stay awake for hours. This pattern continued throughout the day and night. My body ached and I couldn't find comfort in lying down or sitting up. I don't believe in taking medicine. (This is my personal view and it has nothing to do with sikhism). But I do take Guru Arjun Dev Jee's words `Sarab rog ka aukhad naam ` the cure for all ills is Naam) quite literally. And frankly speaking, I was quite surprised that naam hadn't cured me yet. Then I deeply reflected upon my situation and realized that I haven't been japping naam since my sickness began. I usually jap naam internally. And I realized I had tried to do the same in my sickness too, but upon reflection, I realized that my power of concentration had weakened so much that I hadn't been able to concentrate on naam even once. So I decided to jap naam with rasna. I went to Baba jee's room. It was about 1 am. My temperature was into 3 digits. With difficulty, I sat down and for the next five minutes said "waheguru waheguru" out aloud. Realistically, I only concentrated for maybe 20 seconds or so. After five minutes I could not manage sitting up, so I went back to bed. What happened was nothing short of miracle. I dozed off and had a dream at about 3.45 am. I was sitting in a room with other gursikhs and japping naam. Suddenly I woke up. My mind was still enjoying the sangat of the gursikhs and naam. And most amazlingly my temperature was completely normal. This excited me so much that I woke up my wife and told her to feel my pulse (my wife is a health care professional). She too was quite surprised and said, "You are ok now!"." Pyareooo, there is much to be learnt from the above First of all, we all say gurbaneei is TRUTH over and over again. But how many of us really believe that? (Daas personally reflected upon this and realized that deeply, I believe that gurbaNi is for "other" people, not daas. A related topic is our immortality. Reflect upon this and you will realize that none of us really believes that we will ever physically die. We think physical death is for other people, not us). Anyways, getting back to the topic of gurbaNi. We sikhs will be ready to kill if a non-sikh says anything remotely bad about gurbaNi. Yet what gurbaNi tells us, we consistently ignore. Another thing that we can learn from this little "saakhi" is that Bhai Gurdas jee too was writing TRUTH when he wrote: charan sharan gur ek panda jaey chal satgur kot panda aagey hoe lait hai || (take one step towards the Guroo's shelter, and the SatGuroo will take countless steps to meet you) This gursikh too had taken a few steps to sit up and jap naam. Satguru took kot steps to give him sangat of gursikhs in his dream. The "ek" step that a gursikh takes towards the guru is when at amrit vela, a gursikh pushes away sleep and fatigue. Then a gursikh does udham of getting up and taking ishnan when many people are just getting back from parties. Then the gursikh takes steps towards Baba jee's room. Then a gursikh takes steps to sit down. Then a gursikh starts a battle with the mind who constantly wants to play with past and future. A gursikh by saying "waheguru waheguru waheguru" wins the mind and "kills" it for few moments before the mind gathers more power and runs away again. Again the gursikh brings the mind back by lovingly saying eh man pyarea tun sada sach samale || (O my beloved mind, always remember the Truth) The mind comes into the fold of gurbaNi and again the mind repeats "waheguru waheguru waheguru". After a few moments the mind, like a child who doesn't know any better, runs away with the mind's pseudo friends. Again a gursikh chids the mind by saying mere man pardesi ve pyare aao ghare || (O my mind wandering afar with friends, come home) This battle continues until dawn. A gursikh once complained to a naami gursikh, "I jap naam but I have no ras (sweetness)..." The naami gursikh responded, "RAS? There is a battle going on and you want RAS?!!!!" ras will come when the battle is won. Then man jeete jag jit || (by conquoring the mind, the world is conquored) The whole world will bow to the gursikh. This has happened. Look at Baba Attar Singh jee. Look at Baba Nand Singh jee. These gursikhs conquered their mind and the are the True kings of this world. Not the kings who today rule and tommorrow sit in jail. No, these gursikhs could say anything and others who kill themselves to obey them. We too can conquer the world, yes you and I can do it. The first step is to obey gurbaNi. The steps a gursikh has to take are: - wake up at amrit vela (before 6 am). - have a bath - jap naam. (vaahi-guroo vaahi-guroo meditation) - do nitnem. (daily prayers) - continue naam during the day whenever possible. With these few steps, the guru takes a million steps from Sach Khand - where only Truth shines - and comes to a sikh's rather dark heart and sits there and gives sangat to the gursikh when the gursikhs japs naam. Don't for a minute think that we on our own can jap naam for even a millisecond. Our hearts and mind are so filthy with unTruth that it is impossible, yes, impossible for us to even imagine saying "waheguru" even once. It is all due to the guru. > The guru loves, loves, loves gursikhs. The guru knows love. If we were to, even for a millisecond, feel an iota of guru's love, I assure you, my pyari sakhioooo, we would start screaming and wailing because it is so overwhelming that we cannot imagine holding the guru's love within us. This phenomenon does happen. This happens during keertans and simran smagams. Then a gursikh is temporarily taken to new heights because of the presence of naami gursikhs. At those heights, it is possible to see the guru's love flowing. And gursikhs who are not prepared with naam to accomodate this love start crying and wailing. Daas has witnessed this personally. I tell you, my pyare guru ke pyare, pyare gursikhooo, we are loved so much that the combined love of our mother, father, family and friend is but a small spec compared to the guru's love for us. Let us all take this moment to reflect upon the above gursikh's faith in gurbaNi. gurbaNi tells us that we should wake up at amrit vela and jap naam. naam is "waheguru waheguru waheguru waheguru waheguru waheguru waheguru waheguru waheguru waheguru waheguru". gurbaNi tells us japo tan eko naama avar niraphal kaama || daas humbly urges gursikh who don't jap naam to start tonight. Yes,tonight. Tommorrow might come or might not come. Let us all take a vow not to waste even a single free breath. Let us all jap waheguru waheguru waheguru waheguru waheguru waheguru waheguru waheguru waheguru waheguru waheguru waheguru waheguru .... From a Naami Gursikh!
  13. Pauri 9 (Gurmukh is philosopher’s stone) Philosopher’s stone remains hidden and does not publicize itself. Any rare one identifies it and only a prospector gets it. Touching that stone, the lowly metals transform into one metal, gold. Becoming pure gold those metals are sold as invaluable ones. The pleasure fruit of gurmukhs is the holy congregation where merging consciousness into Word, the clumsy mind is chiselled into beautiful shape. Even a worldly person here, concentrating upon the feet of Guru, becomes dear to God, the formless One. Becoming householder, man resides in his innate nature (atma). Translation By Dr Jodh Singh Ji
  14. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh MARTYRDOM OF GURU ARJAN: During the rein of Guru Arjan, crowds were converted to Sikhism in Punjab and in various other parts of India and even in the neighboring countries. It is said that the hilly Rajas of Kulu, Suket, Haripur and Chamba visited the Guru and became his followers as did the Raja of Mandi. Guru's fame and influence became widely spread. At that time Chandu Lal was Emperor Akbar's Diwan or financial advisor. He was a Khatri by caste and was originally an inhabitant of Rohela village in Gurdaspur district of Punjab. His official duties necessitated him to reside in Delhi. He had a young daughter of extreme beauty. Her mother, one day, said to her father, “Our daughter is growing to maturity. We should search for a husband for her." Chandu Lal,therefore, sent his family priest and barber in search for a suitable match for his daughter. The priest and the barber searched every city in the Punjab but could not find a satisfactory match. One day again Chandu's wife insisted that they should continue their efforts. So the priest and the barber were again despatched for the purpose. They searched and searched and when they reached Lahore, they heard about the Guru's young son, Har Gobind. They went to Amritsar and found Har Gobind as the most descent match for the young girl. They came back and reported to Chandu accordingly. They gave their analysis on the excellence of Har Gobind and the enormous respect that his father was commanding in the city of Amritsar. Chandu was not pleased hearing praises of the Guru, so he asked the priest and the barber, “Do you think him equal to me? Guru's caste is inferior to me. You desire to put the ornamental tile of top storey into a gutter! Where am I, the imperial finance minister; and where is the Guru, though he may be an object of veneration to his followers?" After the husband and wife had argued the whole night over the matter, it was decided that Sada Kaur (their daughter) should be given in marriage to Har Gobind. The marriage presents were, therefore, dispatched to Amritsar. It came to the ears of the Sikhs of Delhi that Chandu had used derogatory expressions for the Guru. They sent a messenger with a letter explaining Chandu's utterances and prayed to the Guru to reject his alliance. The Sikhs of Delhi as well as of Amritsar prayed that the alli ance of a haughty head like Chandu should not be accepted. The Guru was obliged to accept the advice of his Sikhs and so with utmost humility he told the matchmakers, “I am contented with my humble lot and desire not an alliance with the great. An ornamental tile should not be put in a gutter." While the matchmakers were still remonstrating, a Sikh, Narain Das, a grandson of Bhai Paro (a famous Sikh of Guru Amar Das) stood in the congregation and beseeched the Guru, “O king, I am the dust of thy lotus feet. I have a daughter whom my wife and I have vowed to offer to thy son. If you make her the slave of thy feet, I shall be fortunate. I am a poor unhonored Sikh and thou art the honor of the unhonored." The Guru replied, “If you have love in your heart, then your proposal is acceptable to me." Narain Das at once went and purchased the marriage presents and betrothal ceremony was performed. Upon this another Sikh, Hari Chand stood up and appealed, “O true king, I have vowed to give my daughter to thy son. If my petition please thee, I will give my daughter as a servant to Har Gobind." The Guru though unwilling at first to accept a second wife for his son, felt that he could not reject the offer of a faithful Sikh. All this happened in the presence of Chandu's matchmakers who went back to Delhi and disappointed their master with sad news. Chandu was very much incensed and he wrote a letter to the Guru apologizing for his thoughtless expressions. He pleaded with the Guru that if he accepted his alliance, he would give large dowry to his daughter and he would have many favors conferred on him (Guru) by the Emperor. In the end he wrote that he was already on bad terms with his brother Prithi Chand and if he fell out with him too, it might ignite a blazing fire which would be difficult to extinguish. He despatched the letter with the priest. The Guru having read it, stated, “It is the pride that ruins men. Man suffers for his acts. They whom the Creator joineth, are united and they whom men joineth, are not. It is the Guru's rule to comply with the wishes of his Sikhs. Their words are immutable. As for his threats, I have no fear because God is the guardian of all." The priest returned with this message. This set the stage for Chandu's evil designs against the Guru. 16. Baba Buddha ji was a most venerated primal figure of early Sikhism, was born on 6 October 1506 at the village of Katthu Nangal, 18 km northeast of Amritsar. Bura, as he was originally named, was the only son of Bhai Suggha, a Jatt of Randhava clan, and Mai Gauran, born into a Sandhu family. As a small boy, he was one day grazing cattle outside the village when Guru Nanak happened to pass by. According to Bhai Mani Singh, Sikhan di Bhagat Mala, Bura went up to him and, making obeisance with a bowl of milk as his offering, prayed to him in this manner: "O sustainer of the poor! I am fortunate to have had a sight of you today. Absolve me now from the circuit of birth and death." The Guru said, You are only a child yet. But you talk so wisely." "some soldiers set up camp by our village," replied Bura, "and they mowed down all our crops - ripe as well as unripe. Then it occurred to me that, when no one could check these indiscriminating soldiers, who would restrain Death from laying his hand upon us, young or old." At this Guru Nanak pronounced the words: "You are not a child; you possess the wisdom of an old man." From that day, Bura, came to be known as Bhai Buddha, buddha in Punjabi meaning an old man, and later, when advanced in years, as Baba Buddha. Bhai Buddha became a devoted disciple. His marriage at the age of seventeen at Achal, 6 km south of Batala, did not distract him from his chosen path and he spent more time at Kartarpur where Guru Nanak had taken up his abode than at Katthu Nangal. Such was the eminence he had attained in Sikh piety that, at the time of installation of Bhai Lahina as Guru Angad, i.e. Nanak II, Guru Nanak asked Bhai Buddha to apply the ceremonial tilak on his forehead. Bhai Buddha lived up to a ripe old age and had the unique honor of anointing all of the four following Gurus. He continued to serve the Gurus with complete dedication and remained an example of holy living for the growing body of disciples. He devoted himself zealously to tasks such as the digging of the baoli at Goindval under the instruction of Guru Amar Das and the excavation of the sacred tank at Amritsar under Guru Ram Das and Guru Arjan. The ben tree under which he used to sit supervising the excavation of the Amritsar pool still stands in the precincts of the Golden Temple. He subsequently retired to a bir or forest, where he tended the livestock of the Guru ka Langar. What is left of that forest is still known, after him, as Bir Baba Buddha Sahib. Guru Arjan placed his young son, Hargobind, under Bhai Buddha's instruction and training. When the Adi Granth (Guru Granth Sahib) was installed in the Harimandar on 16 August 1604, Bhai Buddha was appointed granthi by Guru Arjan. He thus became the first high priest of the sacred shrine, now known as the Golden Temple. Following the martyrdom of Guru Arjan on 30 May 1606, Guru Hargobind raised opposite the Harimandar a platform called the Akal Takht, the Timeless Throne or the Throne of the Timeless, the construction of which was entrusted to Baba Buddha and Bhai Gurdas, no third person being allowed to take part in it. On this Takht Bhai Buddha performed, on 24 June 1606, the investiture ceremony at which Guru Hargobind put on two swords, one on each side, symbolizing miri and piri, sovereignty and spiritual eminence, respectively. Baba Buddha passed his last days in meditation at Jhanda Ramdas, or simply called Ramdas, a village founded by his son, Bhai Bhana, where the family had since shifted from its native Katthu Nangal. As the end came, on 16 November 1631, Guru Hargobind was at his bedside. The Guru, as says the Gurbilas Chhevin Patshahi, gave his shoulder to the bier and performed the last rites. Bhai Gurdas, further to quote the Gurbilas, started a reading of the Adi Cranth in memory of the deceased. The obsequies concluded with Bhai Gurdas completing the recital and Guru Hargobind presenting a turban to Bhai Buddha's son, Bhana. Two shrines stand in Ramdas commemorating Baba Buddha, Gurdwara Tap Asthan Baba Buddha Ji, where the family lived on the southern edge of the village, and Gurdwara Samadhan, where he was cremated. 18. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh Vaar 16 - Pauri 7 Pauri 7 (Gurmukh benevolent like sun) In the dark night myriad stars shine. The houses are lit by lighting the lamps but still the thieves also roam about for the purpose of stealing. The householders shut the doors of their homes and shops before they go to sleep. The sun with its light dispels the darkness of night. Likewise the gurmukh making people understand the importance of nam (meditation), dan (charity) and isanan (ablution) sets them free from the bondage (of life and death). The pleasure-fruit of gurmukhs is the company of holy persons through which animals, ghosts and the fallen ones are salvaged and liberated. Such beneficient persons are dear to the Guru. 22. BILAAVAL, THIRD MEHL, THE SEVEN DAYS, TENTH HOUSE: ONE UNIVERSAL CREATOR GOD. BY THE GRACE OF THE TRUE GURU: Sunday: He, the Lord, is the Primal Being. He Himself is the Pervading Lord; there is no other at all. Through and through, He is woven into the fabric of the world. Whatever the Creator Himself does, that alone happens. Imbued with the Naam, the Name of the Lord, one is forever in peace. But how rare is the one, who, as Gurmukh, understands this. || 1 || Within my heart, I chant the Chant of the Lord, the treasure of virtue. The Lord, my Lord and Master, is inaccessible, unfathomable and unlimited. Grasping the feet of the Lord's humble servants, I meditate on Him, and become the slave of His slaves. || 1 || Pause || Monday: The True Lord is permeating and pervading. His value cannot be described. Talking and speaking about Him, all keep themselves lovingly focused on Him. Devotion falls into the laps of those whom He so blesses. He is inaccessible and unfathomable; He cannot be seen. Through the W ord of the Guru's Shabad, the Lord is seen to be permeating! and pervading everywhere. || 2 || Tuesday: The Lord created love and attachment to Maya. He Himself has enjoined each and every being to their tasks. He alone understands, whom the Lord causes to understand. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, one understands his heart and home. He worships the Lord in loving devotion. His egotism and self-conceit are burnt away by the Shabad. || 3 || Wednesday: He Himself bestows sublime understanding. The Gurmukh does good deeds, and contemplates the Word of the Shabad. Imbued with the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the mind become pure and immaculate. He sings the Glorious Glorious Praises of the Lord, and washes off the filth of egotism. In the Court of the True Lord, he obtains lasting glory. Imbued with the Naam, he is embellished with the Word of the Guru's Shabad. || 4 || The profit of the Naam is obtained through the Door of the Guru. The Great Giver Himself gives it. I am a sacrifice to the One who gives it. By Guru's Grace, self-co! nceit is eradicated. O Nanak, enshrine the Naam within your heart. I celebrate the victory of the Lord, the Great Giver. || 5 || Thursday: The fifty-two warriors were deluded by doubt. All the goblins and demons are attached to duality. God Himself created them, and sees each one distinct. O Creator Lord, You are the Support of all. The beings and creatures are under Your protection. He alone meets You, whom You Yourself meet. || 6 || Friday: God is permeating and pervading everywhere. He Himself created all, and appraises the value of all. One who become Gurmukh, contemplates the Lord. He practices truth and self-restraint. Without genuine understanding, all fasts, religious rituals and daily worship services lead only to the love of duality. || 7 || Saturday: Contemplating good omens and the Shaastras, in egotism and self-conceit, the world wanders in delusion. The blind, self-willed manmukh in engrossed in the love of duality. Bound and gagged at death's door, he is beaten ! and punished. By Guru's Grace, one finds lasting peace. He practices Truth, and lovingly focuses on the Truth. || 8 || Those who serve the True Guru are very fortunate. Conquering their ego, they embrace love for the True Lord. They are automatically imbued with Your Love, O Lord. You are the Giver of peace; You merge them into Yourself. Everything comes from the One and only Lord; there is no other at all. The Gurmukh realizes this, and understands. || 9 || The fifteen lunar days, the seven days of the week, the months, seasons, days and nights, come over and over again; so the world goes on. Coming and going were created by the Creator Lord. The True Lord remains steady and stable, by His almighty power. O Nanak, how rare is that Gurmukh who understands, and contemplates the Naam, the Name of the Lord. || 10 || 1 || Guru Granth Sahib Ji Ang: 841
  23. Having noticed that people go to good Sants and tell their tales of hardship and suffering, I asked a GurSikh how do these good Sants keep from getting depressed? When even one person tells me their sad story I feel the whole weight on my shoulders, instead of pulling the other person up, I fall down with them. The GurSikh said, it's all water off a duck's back. The good Sants are absorbed in naam and gurbanee. These problems and sad stories strike them but don't stick. They sympathise, understand and do ardas. Their internal feathers stay dry...the problem water can't absorb into them. 15.11 Health Remember we are not only Sants but Sipahees as well, we are not homeless holy ones but Warrior Saints. In todays western world we may not be living as a Khalsa army and we may not have a physical hand-to-hand war to fight, but that's no reason to neglect our health and warrior skills. Guru Gobind Singh ji said 'treat peace times as the lull before the storm'. We sit all day. We sit for meditation hours on end. We sit in our cars/buses/trains for hours on end. We sit at the Gurdwara hours on end. We sit at work hours on end. We've emphasised the Sant aspect : Meditation, honest work, share with others, but what happened to the Sipahee? When I was at Anandpur I saw a sign saying 'This is where the younger Sahibzadian used to do gatka training EVERY MORNING'. Read history and you'll notice how physically strong the Sikhs of old have been - Bhai Kaneya ji used to do hard seva in Guru Tegh Bahadur ji's stables. From Guru HarGobind Sahib's time to well after Guru Gobind Singh ji the Khalsa was a fit unit of people. Bhai Manj ji used to chop wood, carry bundles, do seva. Guru Amar Das ji used to walk for miles with Guru Angad Dev ji's bathing water. Guru Nanak Dev ji walked and walked and walked and walked.....on 4 mega travels. Khalsa ji simran can be done walking, weight training, exercising, jogging, on a cycling machine, while stretching, doing Yoga, doing gatka etc etc. We are living in the western world where all modern health facilites are available. We are blessed to enough to have had a decent education so we can go and find out about a decent healthy diet and of what exercises to do. If your knees hurt or your neck hurts while doing meditation then you are doing it wrong or you are overdoing it. Pain is your body's warning system that somethings going to breakdown soon. There is no reason for neglecting one's health by using Naam simran and bhagatee as an excuse. Infact I feel that if one doesn't look after their health then meeting Waheguru ji is going to be tough. Instead of being focused on Waheguru ji thoughts will be on different pains in the body and full time attention will be on fixing them. Like the example of the body being like a wedding car, the mind is the driver and the soul is the bride in the back seat. If the mind did finally get into gear and start driving to dasm duar, but it went totally obsessed to the point where it was Naam japping all the time at 500 miles per hour, with it's foot down hard on the gas pedal. Then sooner or later that wedding car is going to break down. You need service stops, check the oil, tyres and regular maintenance. If the body breaks down then your soul aint getting to Waheguru. Dont fool yourself that it's ok to neglect your health and diet and body because your doing so much sitting and simran. You are a Sant and a Sipahee.
