  9. Singh2 ji The facts are very simple and clear. All the Bani as mentioned in the Rehat Maryada from Akal Takht Sahib is by our Gurus. But if someone tries to pass on all that is written in 'Sri Guru Dasam Granth' as by Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji, its just not acceptable. Thats all. If someone wants to read any Granth other than Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji no one else can have any problem. We are all free to do as per our desires. But to present some Granth other than Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji as our Guru, certainly it can not be acceptable. The personality and intellect of Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji is not comparable to any living being or any other personality in the history of this world. What is did no one else could dare to do. For Gods sake do not belittle the personality of Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji by putting on all that written in the Dasam Granth as that by our Great Guru. There is no end to discussing these things. If we use cool head and unbiased mind everything is crystal clear. Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji Ordered Sikhs to follow Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as perpetual Guru for all time to come. Why should we have any confusion.
  10. Singh2 ji, Your post is a source of ‘great’ enlightenment. Hence forth I must cross check all the Sikh history books with ‘Dasam Granth’. And I never knew that there was a Granth by this name ‘Sri Guru Dasam Granth’ during Guru Gobind Singh ji’s time !. If there was one it should be covering, why 300yrs(and which 300yrs), from Guru Nanak Dev ji’s period onwards !. And I must bring to your notice that your logic is very familiar to the one propagated by many crooks here in Punjab and foremost among them is ‘Ashutosh Maharaj’ !! BTW, whom should Sikhs follow Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s command or someone else’s ?
  11. Thanks singh2 for listening to the Kirtan by Gurmat Gian Group and finding it 'Wonderful'. The real Wonder lies in the Bani that we Sikhs have the privilege of considering as our Guru, as our Guide, as our Protector and our sole ray of hope whenever we find ourselves in some crisis or some insurmountable problem. Why all this ?? Why do we consider Bani of Sri Guru Granth Sabib Ji as our sole Guru? It is Not an "established sikh tradition" to consider the Bani of Sri Guru Granth Sabib ji as our Guru. No, it is not because of some 'tradition' that we consider SGGS as our Guru. The Fact is that we The Sikhs consider Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as our Guru because our 10th Master Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji gave us an 'Order' that after Him Only Bani of Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji is our Guru. Am I wrong? Now, for we Sikhs there ceases to be any differentiation were the Bani of SGGS is concerned. The teachings of SGGS ji is a collective wisdom of All our Ten Gurus. When Dasam pita Himself ordered us to consider the Bani of SGGS ji as our GURU why should we waste our precious time of this jeevan finding guidance from anything other than SGGS ji ? Do we find the Bani of SGGS not sufficient? Have we reached a stage where Bani of SGGS is not answering our thirst of Spiritual knowledge and we need to find something more!! No, at least for me I have a long way to go and I feel one lifetime is not enough to go through All the teachings of SGGS. Why should some of us get the feeling of being more intelligent than our 'Dasam pita' is beyond my comprehension !!! Well, I can not answer on behalf of parcharaks like Inder Ghagha, Sarabjit Dhundha, Sukhwinder dadhehr, Sabhra etc. All of them are surely much more enlightened persons and can answer to queries themselves. One thing I surely fail to understand and that is, why some of our brothers are anxious to replace the sovereignty of Sri Guru Granth Shib ji !! And let us not cloud our sense of judgement with cliques like “established sikh traditions”. Anything you keep doing for a period of time gets the label of “established traditions”. Hinduism, Islam and all other traditional religions are suffering from the burden of “established traditions”. Bhul CHuk Maaf

  17. RaajK If you are interested in developing to learn Raag based Gurbani Kirtan I could direct you to Gurpreet Kaur in Ludhiana. Write to her with your queries and she may be of help. She does take classes of Gurmat Sangeet. Her email id is gurpreetkaurmail@gmail.com If you want to know about her music abilities see this site: http://gurmatgiangroup.wordpress.com/
  18. Another thing. For those who want to learn real good music, Cost is never a hindrance. For Learning Music the Cost is to be paid Not in the form of $ rather you need to Pay in the form of TIME & Effort. Remember great musicians spent their whole Life learning Music.
  19. Learning Sangeet is not about how many Raags you have learnt. Beginners who start learning Shabad compositions from the start reach not very far. For those who want to learn Gurbani Kirtan and want to do Good Singing in future, should always put in effort to develop their Vocal. Those who spend time and effort to develop Vocal Capabilities see the reward in a couple of years. Sur rayaz, Aalap practice, Alankar practice give rich dividends. For those who are Strong in their Basics of Vocals adding Numbers of Raags to their repertoire is a child's play.
  20. shaheediyan ji your information is not totally correct. Bhai Avtar Singh was born in 1925. All through out, he and his elder brother Bhai Gurcharan Singh used harmonium. Its only after 2000 that Bhai Avtar Singh took up Taus and Harmonium continued to remain part of his jatha. And you are giving example of Bhai Avtar Singh to youngsters and want them to do Kirtan with String instruments !! We need to be more serious and thoughtful. Personal or some individual choices should not be forced as a rule. It wont stand the test of time. The purpose of Gurbani Kirtan is Singing Guru's Bani. If done as per Nirdharit Raags, nothing like it. Instruments or no instruments, does not matter. Lets not make Musical Instruments more important than Kirtan itself. We should encourage the use of Tantisajs because their sound effect gives a very positive ambiance to Gurbani Kirtan. For Music, every individual is different. Some have inclination towards Vocal and some have towards Instrumental Music. Those who are inclined to instrumental music should be encouraged to learn Tantisajs and excel in it. Good players of Taus or Dilruba etc can add to the beauty of Gurbani Kirtan tremendously. Bhul Chuk Maaf
  21. Yes, Shashtriya Sangeet is intrinsically linked with Gurmat Sangeet. One can not develop on Gurmat Sangeet without the base of Shashtriay Sangeet. That is why I say that those interested in doing good Gurbani Kirtan need to develop themselves upon Indian Classical Music. The examples you gave clearly prove my view point. We all know of Bhai Avtar Singh who used harmonium through out his life to do Kirtan. And who says Tansen and Haridas needed an instrument to Sing ! Yes, Music as an instrument of devotion is always superior to Music for entertainment. Clearly, if we want our children to learn Kirtan they have to develop Vocal Singing and their is no substitutive to that, and they do not need to have to learn an instrument to learn vocal. The Best is learn to sing with Tanpura. Throughout ages Vocalists used Tanpura for singing. We are confusing ourselves and our children by suggesting that Kirtan or Vocal singing has to be done with an instrument. It was always Tanpura and not any instrument that was used for singing. String Instruments or for that matter any other instrument was/is used as an accompaniments. Mind you, Instruments do not do Gurbani Kirtan. Its the Human being that prays. Instruments are only part of environment.
  22. shaheediyan ji, I would beg to defer with you. Your logic is not producing any good Kirtanias and it would never. One can not take out Indian Classical Music from Gurmat Sangeet. How kirtanias were trained in the past, no one knows. I do not know and you do not know. By doing imaginary talks we do not land anywhere. And vajja is no instrument. Tantisajs are full fledged instruments. See around carefully and you wont find someone who is doing good singing and playing a tantisaj equally well. See it carefully and you'll know what I mean. Sorry if it hurts someone. But facts are all showing. By closing our eyes we do not gain anything. We just can not rewrite the basics of Music just to suite our logic.
  23. I find that many among us who want to learn Gurbani Singing are not taking the proper process to learn it. No one realizes a Simple fact that learning Gurmat Sangeet should be a Post Graduate Course ! And I find that young boys and girls who have a desire to do good Gurbani Kirtan are being put into it as a beginner. I feel that those who are desirous of Learning Proper Gurbani Kirtan should first get into the process of learning Indian Classical Music which is a base on which all the music of Indian sub continent stands on. Only after a proper basic training of Indian Classical Music a Sikh should take up the learning of Gurmat Sangeet. One fact s student of Music should always understand and that is Sangeet is not about learning so many Raags. Its not how many Raags you have learned. It is about how much you have learned the intricacies of music. And how much of music you have ingrained in yourself. Another very important thing to understand is that: There are two things in Music. Learning Vocal and Learning Instrumental. Two are different. First decide what is your aptitude. You want to learn Vocal Music or you want to learn instrumental Music ! If you want to really learn set you priorities clear from the beginning.
