Violin - The Classical Indian Saaz

Recommended Posts

Karnatic (South Indian) sangeet is almost certainly the purer form of Indian Classical, as it has not been much affected by the Persian/Sufi influence that has mixed with and created North Indian Clasical.

One amazing exception to the stringent and well preserved South Indian traditions (in all aspects - faith/fighting/ayurved/music/language etc) is the adoption of the western Violin, which our southern brothers have done so well it has long been mass produced in South India, designed to be tuned to Indian saptak and sur.

It sounds very similar to the Sarangi - and another interesting innovation is the way it is held/played - Indian style i.e. vertical rather than horizontal as in the west.... an actual example of the GGM sketch "everything Indian" coming to life!!

Enjoy:
