Esoteric Taoism In Chinese Cinema

Recommended Posts

Fateh!

Mr Vampire is one of the greatest horror movies of all time in Chinese cinema. Not only is the film great fun, it is also a repository of of Taoist folklore and contains a great deal of esoteric Taoist practices which are described through the form of a Taoist mystic doing battle with his Jiang Shi (stiff corpse, i.e. vampire) foe.

You may notice that Chinese vampires are a bit different from their Western counterparts: they can only hop because they are stiff from rigor mortis, they can only see you when you breathe, their favourite weapon is their enormously long nails (nails continue to grow even after death), and they can be harmed by glutinous rice.

There are 5 films in the series, but the first is the best.

Enjoy,

K.
