Pak Hindu body demands army deployment in flood-affected Sindh

Karachi, Aug 10, (PTI):

The Pakistan Hindu Council has demanded the deployment of army personal in some of the flood affected districts of interior Sindh where there is a large population of Hindus to check incidents of looting.

Dr Ramesh Kumar, the chief patron of the council told PTI today that they had made the demand because of unchecked looting incidents against the Hindu population in the flood affected districts of Jacobabad, Kashmore and Karampur in Sindh.

"Thousands of Hindus who were asked to evacuate their homes by the authorities in these districts due to the floods were looted by gangs of armed men who also looted their homes of all valuables and belongings," Kumar said.

He said there was a population of around 250,000 to 300,000 Hindus in these districts who were not only rendered homeless by the floods but now also looted by armed men.

"We have seen that in Pakistan the minorities are only safe under military rule that is why we are demanding the deployment of the army in districts and towns with large Hindu populations in the interior areas hit by floods," he said.

He said in Ghospur, Kandhkot and Karampur itself armed men not only looted houses but also the Hindus leaving the affected areas on foot or in transport.

The Pakistan Hindu Council is the largest representative body of the Hindus living in Pakistan with majority based in the interior of the Sindh province.

The floods have ravaged many parts of Pakistan with an estimated 1700 people killed and three million left homeless.
