CHANDIGARH :Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal saturday asked the government and private Engineering

Colleges to start a special drive to impart skilled training to the unemployed youth to enable them to find gainful employment for their livelihood.

While reviewing the functioning of the engineering colleges in both government and private sector, the Chief Minister directed the principals and the managements of these colleges to focus on the skill development programme to link it with local industry so that the trained youth could be absorbed in the nearby industry as per its requirement. The Chief Minister was apprised in the meeting that nearly 70000 youth would be provided with skill development training in the five government colleges at Bathinda, Ferozepur, Gurdaspur, Lehragagha and Malout. Likewise, the Chief Minister also impressed upon the management of private colleges to start special programs in their campuses after the working hours so that maximum unemployed youth could be benefited from these skill development training modules.

It was also informed in the meeting that the short term skill development courses started in the government colleges were becoming very popular amongst the youth as these were graded by the national council for vocational training and the certificates awarded to the students after the completion of course were also useful to find a gainful employment in the industry being awarded from an accredited body.

The Chief Minister also asked the principals and the managements of government and private engineering colleges to start +1 and +2 classes in science stream in all the colleges from the next academic session as 25 private colleges had already started this program. The Chief Minister also asked the principals to take up nearby senior secondary government schools under catchment’s scheme for the upgradation of infrastructure to give a boost to the science stream in +1 and +2. As many as 678 such schools had been selected to be provided with requisite infrastructure by the engineering colleges.

Badal also appreciated the scheme of academic audit to review the functioning of the engineering colleges from all aspects to make them efficient, under which all the colleges would be audited by the PTU once in three years.Badal also asked the management of the private colleges to open Adarsh Schools as per the policy of the Punjab government in its vicinity or even the interested management could also be allotted a place of their choice for the opening of such schools.

He also asked the principals of the government colleges to put up a detailed proposal for the upgradation of infrastructure and recruitment of qualified staff against the vacant posts at the earliest to the Principal Secretary Technical Education so that action could be taken in a time bound manner to ensure quality technical education to the engineering students.Badal also asked the management of the private colleges to constantly prevail upon the school students especially with rural background to motivate them to take up science subjects by arranging special campus there.

Prominent amongst others who were present in the meeting included Principal Secretary to Chief Minister DS Guru, Principal Secretary Technical Education Suresh Kumar, Additional Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Gaggandip Singh Brar, VC PTU Dr. Rajneesh Arora, Director Technical Education VK Sharma besides the members of the PUTIA Dr. HS Gill, Dr.Rohin Sachdeva, Satnam Singh Sandhu, Dr. Zora Singh and the principals of the government engineering colleges of Bathinda, Ferozepur, Gurdaspur, Malout and Lehragagha.
