Breathless/Thoughtless state and Love-For-God

Recommended Posts

Recently, I was reading the "Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramhansa Yogananda" and there is something I really liked and would like to share with you:

"It is mentioned that the person who can At-Will (and for Any Number of Hours) enter the breathless state is known to overcome maya. That person could be tagged as Rishi."

As Mind and Breath are inter-dependent, then we could derive that the breathless state is also the thoughtless state. But many of us, believe that we're able to enter the thoughtless state while in meditation. So, it seems like we're wrong somewhere because if we're in thoughtless state (switching off even the sub-conciousness mind), then we should be in breathless state. Most of the time, when we think that we are in thoughtless state, even then the feeling of having thoughtlessness is a thought. Even if deep-sleep, we're somewhat thoughtless but the sub-consciousness mind is still working.

Also somewhere else the same pupil of a Saint was able to enter the samashi (thoughtless state) and his teacher asks

"if the student has developed the Anubhava (Love for the God/Guru). He further stated that one should NOT take the technique as the goal."

Having a thoughtless state (breatheless state) is the technique used to remember the loving God with one-pointed concentration; but having no Love for Him does not take you anywhere.
