When Gurbani defines Gurmat Terminology.

Came across many Tuks where Gurbani answers questions directly.  It will be interesting if the Sangat can find more of these?

1. What is Safat Salah?

ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਲਾਹ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਇ ॥  

vāhu vāhu sifaṯ salāh hai gurmukẖ būjẖai koe.  

Waaho! Waaho! is His Eulogy and Praise; how rare are the Gurmukhs who understand this.

2. What is Maya?

ਰਜ ਗੁਣ ਤਮ ਗੁਣ ਸਤ ਗੁਣ ਕਹੀਐ ਇਹ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਭ ਮਾਇਆ ॥  

Raj guṇ ṯam guṇ saṯ guṇ kahīai ih ṯerī sabẖ māiā.  

Raajas, the quality of energy and activity; Taamas, the quality of darkness and inertia; and Satvas, the quality of purity and light, are all called the creations of Maya, Your illusion.

3. How is Satsangat suppose to be known?

ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੈਸੀ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥  

Saṯsangaṯ kaisī jāṇīai.  

How is the Society of the Saints to be known?  

ਜਿਥੈ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ॥  

Jithai eko nām vakẖāṇīai.  

There, the Name of the One Lord is chanted

4. What is Hukam?

ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਬੁਝਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥੫॥  

Ėko nām hukam hai Nānak saṯgur ḏīā bujẖāe jīo. ||5||  

The One Name is the Lord's Command; O Nanak, the True Guru has given me this understanding. ||5||

5. Who is Satguru?

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥   ਸਤਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ॥  

Salok.   Saṯ purakẖ jin jāniā saṯgur ṯis kā nāo.  

Shalok:   The one who knows the True Lord God, is called the True Guru.

6. Why did we get this body?
 
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਦੁਪਦੇ ॥   ਭਈ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਦੇਹੁਰੀਆ ॥   ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਮਿਲਣ ਕੀ ਇਹ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਰੀਆ ॥  

Āsā mėhlā 5 ḏupḏe.   Bẖaī parāpaṯ mānukẖ ḏehurīā.   Gobinḏ milaṇ kī ih ṯerī barīā.  

Aasaa, Fifth Mehl, Du-Padas:   You have been blessed with this human body.   This is your chance to meet the Lord of the Universe.

7. What is opposed to haumai?

ਹਉਮੈ ਨਾਵੈ ਨਾਲਿ ਵਿਰੋਧੁ ਹੈ ਦੁਇ ਨ ਵਸਹਿ ਇਕ ਠਾਇ ॥   ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਤਾ ਮਨੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥  

Haumai nāvai nāl viroḏẖ hai ḏue na vasėh ik ṯẖāe.   Haumai vicẖ sevā na hovaī ṯā man birthā jāe. ||1||  

Ego is opposed to the Name of the Lord; the two do not dwell in the same place.   In egotism, selfless service cannot be performed, and so the soul goes unfulfilled. ||1||

8. What are the five Thugs?

ਮਃ ੧ ॥   ਰਾਜੁ ਮਾਲੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਜਾਤਿ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਪੰਜੇ ਠਗ ॥   ਏਨੀ ਠਗੀਂ ਜਗੁ ਠਗਿਆ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਰਖੀ ਲਜ ॥
Mėhlā 1.   Rāj māl rūp jāṯ joban panje ṯẖag.   Ėnī ṯẖagīʼn jag ṯẖagiā kinai na rakẖī laj.  

First Mehl:   Royal power, wealth, beauty, social status and youth are the five thieves.   These thieves have plundered the world; no one's honor has been spared.
