Well, we can guess (based on Sainapati's Sri Gursobha) that one reason for using afu was probably long horse journeys, and marches (i.e. increase stamina).

In the previous post, I was just wondering why people would use poppy leaves for bhurji? From what I understand of plant biology, most plants seems to make the compounds they contain in their leaves (at least primarily, I'm sure other processes could be involved too), and then send these compounds to other locations in the plant where they concentrate. That's why cannabis plant leaves have a lower concentration of cannabinoids in the leaves compared to say the flowers. I'm wondering if it's the same with opiate compounds in poppy plants?

Anyway, I know me and you have had a little argy-bargy lately, but I just want to say: when you post stuff like this, it makes me happy because I am learning about my Sikh culture and heritage. Please don't feel the need to promote the jut caste based stuff because, to be straight up, enough of that goes on as it is, you can listen to most 'modren' Panjabi songs or watch those crappy movies from back home  (usually starring mahaafudhu Diljit Dosanj) and get plenty of that crap as it is. There is too much of that as it is, but not enough quality info on genuine Sikh culture (i.e. the true precolonial Sikh subayachaar). I'm sorry if I offended you previously, but please understand this point.   We've already got hordes of apnay brainwashed into this caste identity as it is, when people come on Sikh forums they should be able to learn their Sikh heritage - they can listen to the usual crappy songs and watch the crappy movies if they want  the other stuff, which just leads to more nonsense like this in my opinion:

people in punjab have also been making this bhurji.

When poppy plant is small, it’s leaves are used for making bhurji.

Champa means flower and according to Inderjit singh raqbe wale Champa was used as a code word for opium as this letter was sent to Nahan and could have got into the hands of Mughals.

There is no flower other than opium that can relieve tiredness. Plz watch the video. It’s pretty easy to understand what Champa means Afeem here.

I agree.I myself stay away from poppy plant. It’s highly addictive.

in UP, selected farmers are given licences by the state govt. to grow opium. I would like the same to happen in Punjab. Opium has always been some part of our culture. It will be good for economy and has medicinal and pain killing properties and would be a very good substitute for our smack addicted punjabis. But as you said, it shud be properly regulated and balanced.

Sukha shud make an entry into our houses and shud replace alcohol.

I find it maha admin cut when someone says all nashaas are bajjar kurehit. Only tobacco is bajjar kurehit.

My nana ji had a worker from Bihar on his aarhaa. I remember him from when I was a kid.

Anyway, my nana ji was teetotal. Once he told me this: the worker told him how he'd become addicted to afeem (he was a lot smaller than the Panjabis he worked with and the work was heavy).  The opium was wracking his body and he couldn't function without it (couldn't even get up for work without it). He begged nana ji for help. 

Nana ji told me he had to lock him in a room and made him go cold turkey for a good few days, he said in that time the guy was shrieking and screaming out loud in pain at the withdrawal symptoms. He said he gave him a lot of milk with keeo, and after a few days or like a week, the guy finally overcame the dependency. 

 

I agree sukha is a lot less harmful than alcohol for Panjabis.

Nihang Singh told me that leaves hv almost negligible nasha before the flower pods (dodde) are formed. So leaves are used for bhurji when the poppy plant is small.
