On Sunday 12 June 2005 in Ilford, Sangat from all over the UK reclaimed a saroop of Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji from a 'granthi' who had been taking Guru ji to banqueting halls etc where alcohol and meat were being served.

The so called 'granthi' is Surjit Sinh of Ilford. A local family had originally planned to hold a wedding with Guru ji's saroop in a banqueting hall, called Carlton House. The hall has a bar attached and is known in the area for its parties. The 'granthi' agreed to this and to do Kirtan there.

However, the family agreed to transfer the location of the wedding to their own house after they were contacted by the local Sangat.

After the wedding took place, Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji was taken by the Sangat to a local Gurdwara Sahib which does not allow Guru ji saroop to be taken to places where alcohol and meat are served.

We would like to thank Vaheguru ji and Guru Granth Khalsa ji for allowing the Sangat to do this seva. We would also like to thank the Sangat who travelled from all over the UK to show solidarity with the local Sangat. It is only because of Guru ji's Kirpa that Sikh brothers and sisters stood together as One, regardless of whether they were Amritdhari,Kesdhari, or neither, regardless of Jathebandhi. Finally, we ask forgiveness from Vaheguru ji and the Guru Granth Khalsa ji for the mistakes we have made whilst doing this seva.

If anybody wishes to take a practical step to help prevent Guru ji saroop being dishonoured by being taken to inappropriate places, please contact GurJeevan Singh on 07944-445651 or email him on sikhalerts@yahoo.co.uk.
