Can someone please list and explain the different types of Satis?

Sati could mean pious women, honest person, philanthropist, etc

In terms of women,

- One type of a Sati, is a woman, who does not engage in any sexual contact (physically), other than with her husband

One type of a Sati, is a woman, who does not engage in any sexual contact (mentally), other than with her husband

- Another type is a woman, who will die on hearing the news of her husband's death.

- There are more...

What this topic has to do with gurbani/spiritual poetry and discussions? Sati concept has no place in sikhi, this is more towards indic religion..i will move your topic to shortly to that section?

Bro, Gurbani talks about Satis. Sati has several meanings. The word is used in Gurbani. Don't think of a Sati only, as a woman burning on a pyre.

Actually when Gurbani speaks about Sati, it is using allegory and metaphor (like it is for many things) as a means of taking a physical reference and turning it around to show us what really matters... that being our mind / ego, thoughts and our deeds, and our relationship to God... 

In the case of Sati, it questions the physical practice - and then tells us that the TRUE sati, is one (female or male) who surrenders themselves to their husband Lord ....instead of surrendering physically to a fire or to pain caused by attachment etc. The true sati instead lives through the pain accepting Gods will, and does not jump into a funeral pyre.  It's actually speaking against the practice of sati and telling us to surrender to Waheguru as our Husband Lord. 

Sati meaning stems from Sat (truth or true) and so is used to mean true one, or one displaying true virtues or devotion.  One does not need to be physically female to be a sati (speaking in terms of relationship to Waheguru - husband Lord) I would definitely say that the Gurus who gave their lives in such a state of calm surrender because of their devotion to Waheguru, would qualify as sati. But it's not speaking merely of being killed or giving your life, but I think the actual surrender to God's will.

Bhagat Jaidev jee Maharaaj'e wife was a great Sati. She was at a stage, where she would die, if she heard the news of her husband's death.

That's the type of Sati that Gurbani actually speaks against... our attachment should not be on any human, but on God alone... when Gurbani speaks of separation it's not of separation from anything physical, as we are told over and over that this world is false and an illusion... and only transient. 

I assume you are thinking of this:

ਸਤੀਆ ਏਹਿ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਜੋ ਮੜਿਆ ਲਗਿ ਜਲੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥ 
Saṯī▫ā ehi na ākẖī▫an jo maṛi▫ā lag jalaʼnniĥ. 
Do not call them 'satee', who burn themselves along with their husbands' corpses.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤੀਆ ਜਾਣੀਅਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਜਿ ਬਿਰਹੇ ਚੋਟ ਮਰੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥੧॥ 
Nānak saṯī▫ā jāṇī▫aniĥ jė birhe cẖot maraʼnniĥ. ||1|| 
O Nanak, they alone are known as 'satee', who die from the shock of separation. ||1||

Here it is not separation from the physical husband which is being spoken of... remember that Gurbani takes a physical reference (in this case Sati) to show us what really matters - relationship to God, our thoughts / ego, our deeds.  Here it is saying that killing themselves because of separation from their physical husbands is not what matters... what matters is separation from God. It's saying that the shock of separation from God should be more important than shock over loss of anything transient.... of course this doesn't mean don't love your spouse... of course love your spouse but ultimately it's our separation from God which we are suffering.  

How do we know it's speaking of separation from Waheguru and not the physical husband?  Because this is what is written directly above:

ਮੋਹੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਹੈ ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਰਤਾ ॥
Moh kūṛ kutamb hai manmukẖ mugaḏẖ raṯā. 
The foolish, self-willed manmukh is engrossed in false attachment to family.
ਹਉਮੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਕਰਿ ਮੁਏ ਕਿਛੁ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਲਿਤਾ ॥ 
Ha▫umai merā kar mu▫e kicẖẖ sāth na liṯā. 
Practicing egotism and self-conceit, he dies and departs, taking nothing along with him.
ਸਿਰ ਉਪਰਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਸੁਝਈ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਰਮਿਤਾ ॥ 
Sir upar jamkāl na sujẖ▫ī ḏūjai bẖarmiṯā. 
He does not understand that the Messenger of Death is hovering over his head; he is deluded by duality.
ਫਿਰਿ ਵੇਲਾ ਹਥਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਜਮਕਾਲਿ ਵਸਿ ਕਿਤਾ ॥ 
Fir velā hath na āvī jamkāl vas kiṯā. 
This opportunity will not come into his hands again; the Messenger of Death will seize him.

So we can see it's it's actually telling us NOT to become so attached to our physical family that we die of separation... we should only be so affected by the separation from God.  As I said, love for your spouse is perfectly fine, but not to the point where you would die without them... because only Waheguru deserves that amount of devotion, and if we give up our own journey and our own chance to merge with God because of attachment for a physical person, then it says we are stuck in duality and will lose this chance to find God.

  • Mata Sita jee - Wife of Sri Ram Chandar jee
  • Mata Tara jee
  • Draupadi jee

 

Who is Mata Tara jee? Is she the one, who is mentioned as the wife of Raja Harichand jee, in Vaaran (Bhai Gurdas jee)? Can someone please confirm?

I think it is king bali's (sugreev's brother, from ramayan that was killed by raam) wife.
