  1. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/3492773.stm Fishermen get space guides Some experts say Isro has paid for itself several times over Fishermen in the southern Indian state of Kerala are receiving a much-needed boost in their efforts to find dwindling shoals - from the country's space programme. For many generations, fishermen in the area have relied on traditional methods such as reflections in the moonlight - or even their sense of smell - to find the best places to cast their nets. But as competition for the fish becomes more intense - with several foreign vessels now in the waters - the boats are using satellite technology to track fishing grounds they may have overlooked before. "When you consider the human labour involved in the operation, when you consider the fuel costs, and then compare it against the quantity of fish caught, this is economically viable," VS Pelies, a fisheries consultant and former director of the Marine Fisheries Research Centre in the city of Kochin, told BBC World Service's Global Business programme. "The satellites help it remain so. The satellites reduce the searching time. "We waste lots of time in searching for a sizeable shoal... satellites have given them at least an area. "Luckily for us, the current is very strong and the wind and wave action is very strong. The shoal will not get distributed at least for a day or two." Commercial spin-offs Once the satellites have spotted a shoal, the information can be distributed to the fishermen via mobile phones and the internet. Alternatively, some fishermen travel with a larger ship, equipped to receive the information from space - and then relay it to smaller fishing boats. Satellites are able to track fish from space... It is one of the practical results of the Indian space effort, which began 40 years ago in Kerala. Vikram Sarabhai, the "father" of the Indian space programme, said his vision was to "connect the people, connect the world." Another way the space programme is being put to use is in a new hospital at the Amrita Institute of Medical Science in Kochin. There, large screens show patients in beds 4,000 km away. Experts at the institute can examine the patients via satellite TV beamed from space in what is known as "tele-medicine." This, its pioneers believe, saves time and money by abolishing the frontiers to treatment in the vast sub-continent. Some critics, however, point out that the internet could probably be used in similar way. Others argue that tele-medicine and other schemes like it are a gloss put over to disguise the fact that, in their view, social benefits from the space programme are being put aside in favour of commercial spin-offs. Selling information The Indian Space Research Organisation, Isro, has tried to be as self-reliant as possible in the technology it uses - despite a tiny budget in comparison to, for example, Nasa, the US space agency. And it has a substantial commercial arm in the form of Antrix, based in Bangalore. ...which then end up on sale in the market "When we started this programme, we stated that as a policy, whenever we could go to industry, we would go to industry - rather than doing it in-house," Isro's Srinaner Murti said. "This is one of the important policies we have taken." Isro's budget is $450m annually, 40% of which is spent on Indian industry. One example of Antrix's activities is the taking of data from satellites, and selling this information in the market. "Particularly downstream, there are a large number of companies which operate in the computing market," Mr Murti said. "That way, space could be seen as a catalytic investment - particularly the satellite and launch vehicles provide a basic infrastructure for a large number of industries for the downstream services." Bangalore has been benefiting from the space programme since it was established in the 1950s. Around 1,000 industries are partners of Isro, some supplying the extraordinary specialist equipment needed for rockets and space exploration. Education But some feel that there is too much money in the space programme - money that could be spent easing the tremendous poverty in some areas of the country. "I don't believe that not enough resources are going into the requirements that are uniquely Indian," S Shandreshaker, a consultant at the Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore, told Global Business. Bangalore is the hub of India's technology revolution "We have a large number of people who are illiterate. We have a large number of people who don't have access to adequate health care. "If India is to sustain itself as a major economic power, or a major power of any kind, you have to cater to these people." However, Madhavan Nair, the chairman of Isro, said that India's space programme was tackling these problems too. He said Isro's drinking water project had been able to increase usage of available water to 90%, up from 30%. "That is the direct impact... it goes down to the common man," he said. And he also stressed there were benefits to education. "40% of our population are illiterate. We have used satellite media to bring an education programme to villages scattered all over the country," he explained. "That provides additional quality of life to them, and also communicates them better skills for cultivation."
  2. The answer as to whether we should spend money on poverty reduction or the space race is simple. The answer is both. Concurrently, as human beings have always done. The space race is going to be worth about 500 billion dollars in the next few years and its in Indias interest to get a piece of the pie. Today, a poor fisherman can get all the information he needs right to his cellphone because of Indias space program to not only find the best fishing spots and to get the highest money possible for his catch. http://www.economist.com/blogs/economist-explains/2013/11/economist-explains-0 "Take one recent example: a fierce cyclone that hit India’s east coast last month killed few, whereas a similar-strength one in the same spot, in 1999, killed over 10,000. One reason for the improvement was that Indian weather satellites helped to make possible far more accurate predictions of where and when the storm would hit. Otherwise, improved data on monsoon rains, or generally shifting weather patterns, can help even the poorest farmers have a better idea of when to plant crops. -
  3. You should do your part as well. Instead of building bigger and bigger gurudwaras that satisfy your own egos and washing the floor with milk every morning you should donate some of that milk to the poor. Are you willing to do this? And nobody is brushing anything under the table. The figures you have tabled are in the reports provided by the GOI. False Accolades and Ching..Ching..Ching...
  4. Human beings do all sorts of stuff that are not considered legit by the standards of religion - some of them you can find in threads on this very forum. One corrupt gyani grabs a bibi and tries to kiss her does that mean we have to stop the Khalsa panth? Mr. Tony in his infinite wisdom is relating the dog marrying incident to the space programme. By that standard, he should be speaking out against German beastility which is perfectly legit under German law and is growing. He should be questioning the Germans as well. No? As for your religious texts - there are technically only a handful - the growing number of texts in the world deal with rationalism where the creator either does not exist or is irrelevant.
  5. Bestiality brothels are 'spreading through Germany' warns campaigner as abusers turn to sex with animals as 'lifestyle choice' Animal welfare officer Madeleine Martin problem of 'erotic zoos' is growing She tells of farmer whose once friendly sheep began refusing human contact So when he put CCTV in his barn he watched men file in and abuse his herd By MATT BLAKE PUBLISHED: 16:53 GMT, 1 July 2013 | UPDATED: 16:58 GMT, 1 July 2013 103 View comments Bestiality brothels are spreading through Germany faster than ever thanks to a law that makes animal porn illegal but sex with animals legal, a livestock protection officer has warned. Madeleine Martin told the Frankfurter Rundschau that current laws were not protecting animals from predatory zoophiles who are increasingly able to turn to bestiality as a 'lifestyle choice'. She highlighted one case where a farmer in the Gross-Gerau region of southwest Germany, noticed his once friendly flock of sheep were beginning to shy away from human contact. Shock discovery: Ms Martin told of one case where a farmer rigged a CCTV camera in the rafters of his barn after finding his normally friendly sheep refusing human contact, to discover multiple men sneaking in in the dead of night to sexually abuse his beloved livestock So he rigged a CCTV camera in the rafters of his barn to discover multiple men sneaking in during the night to sexually abuse his beloved livestock. More... Cows with TB have entered human food chain: Infected meat served up in schools, hospitals and to the military A step in the wrong direction? Hilarious video shows dog's troubles with mastering the stairs 'There are now animal brothels in Germany,' Martin told the paper, adding that people were playing down the issue by by describing it as a 'lifestyle choice'. Armed with a host of similar case studies, Ms Martin is now calling for the government to categorically ban bestiality across the country. Defenceless: There are even 'erotic zoos' which people can visit to abuse animals ranging from llamas to goats Last November German authorities said they were planning to reinstate an old law forbidding sex with animals after a sharp rise in incidents of bestiality along with websites promoting it. Parliament began debating changes to the national Animal Protection Code with the agricultural committee of the Bundestag pledging fines of up to £20,000 for a first offence. Bestiality dropped off the statute books as a crime in 1969 but in recent years the number of people believed to be participating in such acts has increased significantly. There are even 'erotic zoos' which people can visit to abuse animals ranging from llamas to goats. Hans-Michael Goldmann, chairman of the agriculture committee, said the government aimed to forbid using an animal 'for individual sexual acts and to outlaw people 'pimping' creatures to others for sexual use.' German 'zoophile' group ZETA has announced it will mount a legal challenge should a ban on bestiality become law. 'Mere concepts of morality have no business being law,' said ZETA chairman Michael Kiok. When the 1969 law banning sex with animals was banned the Animal Protection Law was introduced, but it failed to include a specific ban on zoophilia. The terms bestiality and zoophilia are the formal names for having sex with animals for pleasure. 6. Yeah, and this is coming from a country (Britain) where bestiality is considered legit. And this country runs a space programme as well. Like the two are related. Douche!
  7. Blind faith is blind faith. Whether it's that girl marrying the dog or people bowing before their invisible friend day in and day out. Everybody does it because it thinks its going to make their lives better. You should be against blind faith but it has to be hog out. No cherry picking. ALL RELIGION by definition is blind faith.
  8. Missed your little comment here. So, is worshiping some invisible deity sitting in heaven who never really seems to show up when needed and categorized by science as non-existent "andhviswas?" But the followers of this invisible deity seem to do far worst than this girl - bomb, kill, rape, behead, and money grab. Its like all these people who are saying jyotish vidya as crap, fraud and against science but have no qualms about "donating" millions and spending countless hours trying to please their friend in the sky. Or as I would say " If my water can't reach the sun how is your ardas going even further guruji?" Hypocrite.
  9. Except, a chinese worshipper like yourself fails to realize the cost of such rapid growth (Great Leap Forward 40-45 million dead) starved and shot, strict one child policy ( forced abortions, babies killed at birth by the government, sterilized) , complete removal of religion and environmental damage not seen before in history. Would you like this for your community? Probably not. I like China though. They just signed a deal with ISRO for joint ventures. The aim is to improve remote sensing and disaster preparation. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/After-Mars-its-China-for-India-Kathakali-for-Isro-chief/articleshow/43069954.cms As for the internet, some person somewhere decided to make an investment rather than feed the poor not knowing the full potential of this area to improve commerce, communication and create jobs.
  10. I wonder how much money the gurudwaras raked in during this time...hmmmm..probably more than 67 million I suspect. Care to donate this money to the poor? That is what the gurus would have wanted, no? Afterall, it's the religions that say "service to humanity above everything" or other nice and tidy slogans. Now step up. Or is it just lip service as your drive around in your BMWs and chase money and careers. The ironic part is that you are now sitting on your computer, using the internet, fibre optics and technology that were created from scientific endevour. Ever stop and think how many people died while you were using this technology? What a hypocrite. Looooser! BTW, 120 million Chinese are still under the poverty line fool!
  11. Nothing wrong with dreaming and trying. It's no different than a young, poor student trying to become a doctor. You live in la la land I guess even dreaming and striving is a sin in your world. Obviously, you have not read your history either because up until about 20 years ago china was in the same boat as India. The colonialists destroyed it and the Chinese were called the "sick man of Asia" and we're generally thought that the Chinese civilization would not amount to anything. They too were living in a delusional world unless of course you think the Chinese and Americans were born superpowers from the womb. Pakistanis like yourself need to stop marrying your own sisters first, and then you too will become a responsible power. As for not having toilets in India, my simple response to that why do we need toilets when we have one giant Islamic toilet to the west of us.
  12. Social welfare programs and dhan don't solve poverty issues at least not long term. It's done by creating jobs.
  13. Yes, this was done on a shoe string budget and will open up Indian capabilities in this area and hopefully rake in massive profits. The cost of the entire program was a measly 67 million compared to the America probe to Mars which landed yesterday (Maven) and cost nearly 670 million dollars. "ISRO has applied its technology to "telemedicine", directly connecting patients in rural areas to medical professionals in urban locations via satellites.[71] Since high-quality healthcare is not universally available in some of the remote areas of India, the patients in remote areas are diagnosed and analysed by doctors in urban centres in real time via video conferencing.[71] The patient is then advised medicine and treatment.[71] The patient is then treated by the staff at one of the 'super-specialty hospitals' under instructions from the doctor.[71] Mobile telemedicine vans are also deployed to visit locations in far-flung areas and provide diagnosis and support to patients.[71] ISRO has also helped implement India's Biodiversity Information System, completed in October 2002.[73] Nirupa Sen details the programme: "Based on intensive field sampling and mapping using satellite remote sensing and geospatial modelling tools, maps have been made of vegetation cover on a 1 : 250,000 scale. This has been put together in a web-enabled database which links gene-level information of plant species with spatial information in a BIOSPEC database of the ecological hot spot regions, namely northeastern India,Western Ghats, Western Himalayas and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This has been made possible with collaboration between the Department of Biotechnology and ISRO."[73] The Indian IRS-P5 (CARTOSAT-1) was equipped with high-resolution panchromatic equipment to enable it for cartographic purposes.[10] IRS-P5 (CARTOSAT-1) was followed by a more advanced model named IRS-P6 developed also for agricultural applications.[10] The CARTOSAT-2 project, equipped with single panchromatic camera which supported scene-specific on-spot images, succeed the CARTOSAT-1 project.[74]"
  14. Except, India's space expertise and low cost is set to make it billions over the next few years in worldwide orders. I'm sure that will help your poverty concern. Additionally, the satellite program has greatly helped farmers by predicting weather patterns and sending it straight to your phone. Natural disasters? Yes, the space program has improved fibre optics, defence, created jobs, partnerships and improved disaster preperation. I notice a hint of jealousy. And that was the whole purpose of the thread and specially congratulating Hindus. I say if you are so concerned about poverty then donate your salaries, land, cars, houses, massive gurudwaras. But I know you won't because it requires more than lip service. Congratulations Hindus.
  15. Congratulations to all Hindus everywhere! Mangalyaan is officially in the orbit of Mars. And a very special congrats to my brahmin community. You guys did it again! This small group of largely brahmins at ISRO found water on the moon and now sending this satellite 330 million km to Mars on a shoestring budget. This little 2% community never ceases to amaze me.
  16. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-29306271 ndia's maiden mission to Mars has "entered the Martian neighbourhood", its space agency says, 48 hours before its planned arrival in orbit. Launched last November, the spacecraft - known informally as Mangalyaan - will complete a 300-day journey to reach the orbit on Wednesday. If it succeeds, India will become the fourth country in the world to claim a successful Mars mission. US, Russia and the European space agency already have probes there. "Our navigator's calculations shows that the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) has entered the gravitational sphere of the influence of Mars," the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) tweeted on Monday. Science journalist Pallava Bagla told the BBC the gravity of Mars had now "started acting on the orbiter and it would gather more speed" ahead of its planned entry into the orbit of the Red Planet. Regional space race Later on Monday, India's space scientists successfully started the spacecraft's idling main engine for four seconds to test their efficiency. The probe is being tracked by scientists and engineers in Bangalore The engine will be fired to slow down the spacecraft, enabling it to be captured by the planet's gravity and place it into Martian orbit. The 1,350kg (2,976lb) spacecraft is equipped with five instruments including a sensor to track methane or marsh gas - a possible sign of life, a colour camera and a thermal imaging spectrometer to map the surface and mineral wealth of the planet. The mission will also analyse the thin Martian atmosphere. Separately, the US space agency Nasa's latest Mars satellite arrived successfully in the Mars orbit on Monday after its 10-month journey. India's Mars Mission is being seen as the latest salvo in a burgeoning space race between the Asian powers of India, China, Japan, South Korea and others. At $72m (£43m), India's Mars mission is comparatively cheap, but some commentators have still questioned whether a country with one of the highest rankings for childhood malnutrition in the world should be spending millions on a mission to the Red Planet.
  17. Is this the same Jai Singh that helped Shivaji escape? And was poisoned by Aurangzeb for it?
  18. Set aside the Bhinderwale Zindabad chant for a second. He's dead. What is your position on fellow Sikhs inviting Indira to invade the Golden Temple? Or fellow sikhs helping the GOI in crushing sikh militancy? Is this Rajputish behavior? lack of Industry, commerce, education, women safety and rights, crime, drugs are at a all time high under sikh rule today. What is your position on this?
  19. Yep, the Brahmins definitely benefited from moslem rule - ancient libraries burnt, temples destroyed, massacred priests, forceful conversions. Yes sir! Definitely beneficial! LOL! As for the Buddhism the less said the better. This crappy philosophy or "religion" has a fatal flaw- absolute non-violence, which makes them sitting ducks in war time. They lost because their great king Ashoka banned hinduism, its rituals and processions. The Buddhists ruled most of India until a young preacher from South India takes the fight to them. The survival of the fittest. I agree with you on the feudal nature of the Rajputs. They are no different than the Sikhs, Afghans and other so called martial races - petty disputes, clannish behavior, infighting, caste divisions. The same things that you accuse the Rajputs of can be said about the Sikhs today. BTW, if I remember my history it was fellow sikhs who encouraged and prodded Indira to invade the Golden Temple - Badal, Longowal, Tohra, Brar etc..so what is your position on this?
  20. Easy there my farmer friend. You see sikhism was handed to yourself by default and it happened because the last Guru died before his time along with his family. And now it's starting to show. The marvelous thought in the Shri Guru Granth Sahib is the work of Khatris and Bamans. Everybody with half a brain knows how the Rajputs were brought into Hinduism. And the Sikh gurus were well aware of this story because they traveled extensively in Rajasthan. About 1000 years ago or perhaps more the barbarian hordes were taken to Mt. Abu in Rajasthan and baptized into Hinduism, and given the Khanda, Singh surname, specific dress (kesariya bana) trained in shastar vidya and told to defend dharma which they did. There is no other group from ancient times to the modern indian and pakistani army that has perhaps done more to defend their motherland.
  21. Or as Shah Jahan taunts his son Aurangzeb after being imprisoned. Praise be the Hindus in all cases, As they even offer water to their dead, And you my son are a wonderful Mussalman, As you cause me in life to lament for water!
  22. Why are we guys arguing as to who brought down the moghul empire and when. Why don't we hear it from the Aurangzeb Nama (Alamgir Nama) from the will and final testament of that fascist, tyrant Aurangzeb. TWELFTH,—The main pillar of government is to be well informed in the news of the kingdom. Negligence for a single moment becomes the cause of disgrace for long years. The escape of the wretch Shiva took place through [my] carelessness, and I have to labour hard [against the Marathas] to the end of my life, [as the result of it]. -- Aurangzeb
  23. I will mention two more - Hemu Chandra and Khusro Khan. Khusro Khan is an interesting case. Here was a Hindu child that was abducted by the moslems, raped, assaulted by the Sultan and his men for years. Until he grew up, captured power in Delhi, converted back to Hinduism and installed idols at Jama Masjid, burned the masjid and made his ministers sit on and step on Korans amongst other things. “In those dreadful days the infidel rites of the Hindus were highly exalted, the dignity and the importance of the Parwárís were increased, and through all the territory of Islám the Hindus rejoiced greatly, boasting that Dehlí had once more come under Hindu rule, and that the Musulmáns had been driven away and dispersed”. (Baranī) t so happens that a young lad with charming features was enslaved by the Muslim conquerors ofPatan (in present day Gujarat) c. 1297, and presented to Sultan Alauddin Khilji, after being converted to Islam and named Hasan. Inside the royal household, Hasan became a favoruite of Mubarak, Alauddin’s son, who subsequently conferred upon his sex slave and confidante, the title of Khusro Khan, and entrusted him with military missions and policies pertaining to administration. It is said that Khusro Khan was instrumental in the assassination of Alauddin Khilji and he did kill Mubarak Shah, thereby bringing an end to the Khilji dynasty. Khusro Khan did so with the aid of QueenDevala Devi, another enslaved Hindu princess, forcibly betrothed, first to Alauddin’s elder son Khizr Khan and then included in Mubarak Shah’s harem when the later killed his elder brother. The coup that Khusro Khan and Devala Devi staged did not just bring about the downfall of the Khilji dynasty, but also, albeit briefly, restored Hindu rule in Delhi, because soon after claiming the throne,Khusro Khan is said to have made a declaration to the effect of him renouncing the religion forced upon him (Islam) and him assuming the rule of India as a Hindu ruler with Devala Devi as his wife and also a reconvert to Hinduism. Khusro Khan is known to have assumed the title of Nasiruddin which means ‘defender of the faith’. It is strange that he would assume such a title right after publicly renouncing the faith; however, his actions were indeed in keeping with his declaration. Khusro Khan or Sultan Nasiruddin is remembered for his policy of religious tolerance and liberal administrative policies. He revoked several taxes which at the time were a burden for his people, including the notorious Jaziya levied on Hindus. He is known to have advocated a more respectful attitude towards women and a more benignant treatment of slaves. It is to be noted that the sources of most of these information are the chronicles of Muslim scholars, chiefly of Muhammad Qasim Farishta (from his Tareekh-e-Farishtah) and Ziauddin Barani, both of whom held a critiquing view of a Kafir ruler, a reconvert, who, at least to Farishta, ‘was a shemale’. Hence we may safely assume that many of Khusro Khan’s virtues were deliberately overlooked by these scholars. It may also have been that Khusro Khan was not a ‘shemale’ contrary to Farishta’s claims (which he did perhaps out of malice) and that the love story involving him and Devala Devi may have been true, given that he married her when he became king. If that was indeed the case, it makes him an even more extraordinary character, for he ordered sex slaves to be treated with respect and dignity, and almost half of the sex slaves at that time were castrated males or naturally born members of the third sex. So, through his own life or through his policies, Khusro Khan, the once Delhi Sultan, consolidated the position of the third sex in the society, and showed the world that people, who are neither male, nor female, are still humans, with a feeling, beating heart and a functioning brain that, when harnessed and channeled well can wield a sword and a scepter and rule a nation with equanimity and respect for civil liberties.
  24. "The Marathas fought with the greatest valour which was beyond the capacity of other races. These dauntless blood-shedders didn't fall short in fighting and doing glorious deeds. But ultimately we won with our superior tactics and with the grace of the Divine Lord" -Abdalis letter to Madhav Singh
