Manjit Singh secretly made eight transactions from her solicitor employer's account to the bank account of a man she met on a dating website who requested financial help. Liverpool Crown Court heard that the 60-year-old former Malaysian police officer believed the man would repay her, but both he and the money have 'vanished' and are yet to be traced by police. Singh, of Warwick Street, Toxteth, Liverpool, pleaded guilty to eight offences of fraud by abuse of position between September 23 and October 5, 2021. Peter Killen, prosecuting, told the court Singh had been employed by Lei Dat & Baig solicitors, based on Renshaw Street in the city centre, from 2014 where she initially worked as a volunteer on IT systems. She became a full time employee in 2017 and by 2019, was working on cases and had been trained to transfer money between client and office amounts, and make payments under the supervision of Mr Baig. On the evening of October 6, 2021, Mr Baig checked his business account and found just £40,000, having expected to see a balance of £800,000. Thereafter came deposits of £47,000 on September 27, £87,700 on September 29 and £155,080 on September 30. The transactions finally rose to £388,200 on October 4 and £260,000 on October 5, bringing the total to £958,180. He called Singh, who said the transfers had been properly made and said she would check the following day. The next morning, she sent him a message saying she had identified the problem and that she would resolve it, alongside an image of a cheque for £945,000 purportedly payable to the firm. ... ... 'She explained the transfers were for a man called Ravi she had met online', Mr Killen said. 'She believed that Ravi wanted to marry her, she believed he was currently in Dubai working. 'She met him on a site called Asian.Shaadi.com which is a site for people interested in getting married,' said Mr Killen. Singh explained that she initially denied his request for a few thousand pounds, but then agreed. He asked for larger and larger payments on the basis he would be able to travel from Dubai once equipment was shipped. Singh, who divorced in 2019, previously said she had hoped to marry Mr Jani. She said they had numerous phone calls a day and she saw him once or twice on FaceTime. When her bank accounts were examined there was no evidence of any financial benefit to her. ... Gwen Renshaw, defending, said the messages between Singh and Mr Jani were illuminating and shows she was extremely vulnerable. 'He repeatedly told her she was beautiful, that he cared for her and would look after her and they were in love', she said. 'She was told she was beautiful, he would care for her and look after her and they were in love. She is at a loss as to how she could have been so naïve. 'At the time, she was going through a very difficult period. It would seem she was ripe for exploitation as a result of a number of factors. 'She clearly believed the line Ravi Jani was spinning her. She believed she was helping a man she loved and the money would be returned. 'The defendant clearly bitterly regrets her involvement in this offence. Ms Singh feels incredibly stupid for having been taken in and acted as she did.' She added that Singh, who has long standing mental health problems, was going through a difficult time. The court heard that Singh's father, who had been shot, was a police officer. Her siblings were also in the force. Singh left the force after her father's death and came to the UK, where she worked for charities including Women's Aid. She married someone from a different faith, who was unfaithful and left her while she was suffering from cancer, Ms Henshaw said. Her ex-partner then had a child in a new relationship. Singh was unable to have children due to her cancer. Judge David Aubrey, KC, said that only an immediate jail sentence was appropriate and put her behind bars for two years. .....
  2. https://sikhsiyasat.net/sikh-lawyers-bloom-review-not-independent-and-fundamentally-flawed/ Sikh News » World News Sikh Lawyers: Bloom Review Not Independent And Fundamentally Flawed July 20, 2023 | By Sikh Siyasat Bureau London: Sikhs in Law earlier today presented their 28-page report on the Bloom Review at the House of Lords. They have concluded the Bloom Review represents nothing more than the personal views of Colin Bloom who is not independent given his active role in the Conservative Party and strongly held religious views as a devout Christian. His references to subversive and extremist activities by Sikhs make absolutely no sense, reveal his bias and are backed up by zero evidence. It is obvious he does not understand these terms from a UK government perspective as Sikhs present no threat. Colin Bloom has demonstrated he lacks the very ‘faith literacy’ which he recommends those in government should possess by failing to understand the Sikh faith focuses on a ‘way of life’ with an emphasis on practices and traditions. The Sikhs in Law report states the Bloom Review is fundamentally flawed both in its methodology and in its outcome with respect to the Sikh community. Preet Kaur Gill as Chair of the APPG for British Sikhs raised a series of Parliamentary Questions on 6 July about the Bloom Review and the response from the Minister on 14 July confirms the way Colin Bloom conducted the review and reached his conclusions was much to be desired.
  3. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-66226832 A vigil has been held to remember women of Sikh heritage who have lost their lives to domestic violence or so-called "honour crimes". The event, in Birmingham's Centenary Square, took place on what would have been the birthday of Surjit Athwal, who was killed in India in 1998. Her husband and mother-in-law were jailed for arranging her murder. Charity Sikh Women's Aid (SWA) said the remembrance day will be held every year. It said this would raise awareness of Sikh women who had died "in domestic homicides or suicide as result of domestic and sexual abuse" and "other harmful practices including 'so-called' honour-based abuse". Sahdaish Pall, from the charity, said: "It's not a subject matter that's talked about very much in our community. It's quite taboo. It's brushed under the carpet and today what we're doing is we want to bring this to the forefront. "A, we need to accept first of all that this is happening and, B, we need to do something about it. "We've got to challenge this oppression and abuse of our women, because it's the only way to save lives." SWA, which has a national victim support service, is a community-based organisation set up by women from the Sikh community in the West Midlands. Surjit Athwal, 27, originally from Coventry, was murdered during a trip to the northern Indian state of Punjab in 1998, in a so-called "honour killing". Her mother-in-law, Bachan Athwal, and husband Sukhdave Athwal, from Hayes, west London, were jailed at the Old Bailey in 2007.

July 13, 2023 July 13, 2023 By DHIREN MANGA "your evil actions have taken my son's life" Two 17-year-olds have been jailed for murdering a 16-year-old boy in a case of mistaken identity. Ronan Kanda was stabbed close to his home in Wolverhampton after he visited a friend’s house to buy a PlayStation controller on June 29, 2022. At Wolverhampton Crown Court, it was heard that Pradjeet Veadhasa was owed money by Ronan’s friend and intended to confront him. The judge, Mr Justice Choudhury, said it was a “tragic coincidence” they saw Ronan leave the house where their intended victim lived and believed he was the boy they were after. Ronan was just yards away from his home when he was attacked from behind as he listened to music in headphones. Earlier in the day, Veadhasa had collected a ninja sword set and a large machete from a local post office after buying them online using a fake name. Sukhman Shergill carried the machete by Veadhasa stabbed Ronan twice with the sword and he died at the scene. The boy suffered a 20cm-deep wound in his back and hip area, and a 17cm-deep wound in his chest. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-66095727 Earlier that day Veadhasa had visited a post office to pick up the set of ninja knives and a machete he had bought online. He had taken a dislike to one of Ronan's friends and the two had previously fought, detectives said. Ronan was set-upon by then 16-year-olds who police said they mistook for his friend. He suffered a 20cm deep wound in his back and hip area and a 17cm deep wound in his chest. "They are monsters," Mrs Kanda said. "These youths they didn't think twice before what they did to my son." Ronan's family is now calling for an urgent ban on the online sale of swords and large knives to "stop another innocent life getting taken away by knife crime". IMAGE SOURCE,WEST MIDLANDS POLICE Image caption, Ronan was chased by the pair carrying a sword and a machete bought online "When I saw for the first time the size of the sword, I fainted in grief," said Mrs Kanda. The teenager's sister Nikita Kanda said she was astonished at how easy it was to buy such dangerous weapons. "The boy who murdered my brother, he actually ordered them under his mother's ID," she said. "He was able just to walk into the post office and just give the name and be given the parcel. "If that boy was ID'd there, then maybe my brother would be here today." In June they visited Parliament to meet policing minister Chris Philp MP and shadow minister Sarah Jones to call for stricter legislation. His sister said they wanted justice for the "way our beautiful boy was taken in broad daylight". It has been a year since Ronan's murder and his mother said she would never forgive the boys who took his life. "There is no closure to this. I'll never understand why this happened to an innocent boy," she said. "People say forgive, make peace. But no, I make peace within myself and I'm not forgiving them. "They're monsters. They're evil."

Tirminder Singh Lallie 'reacted badly' when a member of the public flagged him down in the Black Country for allegedly driving too fast. The 37-year-old jumped out of his Range Rover after believing he had been called a racial slur. But he was then hit over the head with a pole by the man who had summoned him to slow down. Lallie retaliated by punching the man repeatedly, in an attack he has now admitted was 'excessive self-defence'. But he only fought back because he thought he was being faced with a racist assault, a court heard. It comes after previous abuse in the workplace over his religion and appearance shattered his mental health and left him 'angry'. Lallie, of Perry Hill Road, Oldbury, has now been jailed for one year over the violent row. He was also sentenced for a verbal altercation he had with a PCSO who approached him over his driving during a separate incident. Sentencing, District Judge Lower said: "It strikes me that both of these incidents came about because you're an angry man. "At your previous place of work, you suffered abuse because of your religion because of how you look and that's had an impact on your mental health and you have been taking medication as a result of that. This means you react badly to things you perceive are either racist towards you or difficult in terms of going about your day-to-day business." The judge said there was 'no way of knowing' whether Lallie had been called Lallie a 'brown b******'. He added: "Whatever the rights and wrongs of this incident, you accepted that you went completely over the top in retaliation. "You could have easily done something else - walked away, called the police." Wolverhampton Crown Court heard how a man was working in Perry Hill Road, in Oldbury at about 3pm on August 4, 2021. The painter was putting a ladder in his van when he spotted Lallie's Range Rover heading towards him, prosecutor Ilana Davis said. He thought Lallie was driving too quickly so waved his hand at the driver, gesturing at him to slow down. The car came to a 'sudden halt'. He shouted and swore from the car window before getting out of the vehicle and 'charging' towards the man. Lallie became 'aggressive' and said "I will knock your block off" before 'getting in the man's face'. The man asked the defendant if he was on drugs, with Lallie replying "I could be". The court heard how the man was clutching a pole at this point and then used it to hit Lallie's head twice. Lallie hit the man back, causing him to 'stagger', with the victim then returning another blow. The defendant got the man in a headlock before punching him three or four times. Ms Davis said: "Lallie was wearing a steel bangle around his wrist. He pulled it over his fingers as he punched." Members of the public then intervened, with Lallie walking off into a nearby property. The victim went to hospital, where medics glued back together two cuts to his head. In a statement, he claimed Lallie's 'unprovoked attack' stopped him from working for a few days and he is now worried about bumping into the defendant when out. Ms Davis said: "He described being horrified and scared that his injuries could have been worse if others had not come to help him." John Richards, defending, said Lallie believed he was being fronted with an incident of racism when he got out of his Range Rover. He said: "He should not have done it. He accepts that. He accepts what he did was wrong." The court heard how Lallie was also sentenced for a separate incident which occurred last July. PCSO Sajid Khan was in Marshall Road, Oldbury, with a colleague when the pair spotted Lallie driving a van. They decided to pursue the vehicle after being concerned with the defendant's driving. Officers indicated they wanted to speak to Lallie when he pulled over near a One Stop store, in Castle Road West. They told him to wait but instead he went into the store, Ms Davis said. Lallie was spoken to about his driving when he returned to his van but he claimed officers were 'lying'. He became 'aggressive', flinging his arms and hands around as he went back inside his van. PCSO Khan stood in front of the driver's door but Lallie closed it, making contact with the officer. Lallie got out of the car and again became 'aggressive' as he pointed his finger in the officer's face and said "I don't like the police". He also told officers to "f*** off" before driving away. Lallie admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm on a basis, stating he had assaulted the painter but it was 'excessive self defence'. He also admitted threatening behaviour relating to the incident with the PCSO. Lallie was told he must also pay £100 compensation to the officer when he was sentenced on Thursday, June 29.

Lakhveer Kaur, age 23, fell from the bridge near Smethwick High Street on June 24 and died in hospital from her injuries. Passersby saw Miss Kaur on the bridge and called emergency services but paramedics found her on the dual carriageway. A fundraising campaign quickly reached its £10,000 target to fund the repatriation of her remains to her family in India. However, a police investigation is still ongoing concerning Miss Kaur's death which will delay her body being allowed to leave the country. Smethwick Councillor Parbinder Kaur has helped organise the vigil outside the sweet shop near the High Street bridge at midday tomorrow. She said: "This is a terrible tragedy. It is a very sensitive subject in the Sikh community and there will be people coming from Spain and Glasgow for this vigil. She was all alone in this country." Sikh Women's Aid organised the GoFundMe page which raised £10,000 within 24 hours. A spokesman said: "Mum-to-be, Lakhveer Kaur died in Smethwick, West Midlands. Lakhveer had only been in the UK for a short period of time and came on a student visa. She has no family or relatives here in the UK who can support the aftermath of her untimely and sad passing. "With generous support, we have now raised our target of £10,000 to support Lakhveer's family in repatriating Lakhveer Kaur's remains to her family in India where they wish to perform her last rites. "The funds raised will go towards transporting Lakhveer Kaur back to India, funeral costs and all remaining funds will be given to Lakhveer Kaur's family to support them as they are economically struggling." They added: "There are multiple statutory enquires currently underway by various services into Lakhveer Kaur's death. These can take some time but once those enquires are complete we will be in a position to progress the repatriation of Lakhveer Kaur. "We are humbled by the community's response to our crowdfunding campaign. In less than 18 hours we fundraised our target to send Lakhveer Kaur back to her family. As we have hit our target the crowdfunding page is now closed to receiving donations. "The funds raised will be used for two things: any costs associated with Lakhveer being repatriated to India and then to her native home and all costs associated with her funeral. "All funds that are left over from the above expenses will be given directly to Lakhveer's family."ew By Adam Smith Reporter Senior Reporter for the Express & Star.

Henry Vaughan Home affairs reporter and feature writer @Henry_Vaughan Wednesday 5 July 2023 23:55, UK Listen to this article A former supermarket worker was encouraged by an AI "chat bot" in a "Star Wars-inspired" plot to kill Queen Elizabeth II, a court has heard. Jaswant Singh Chail, 21, was wearing a handmade metal mask and armed with a loaded crossbow when he scaled the perimeter of the Windsor Castle grounds on Christmas Day 2021. He told a police officer "I am here to kill the Queen" when stopped some two hours later near the late Queen's private residence, where she and other members of the Royal Family were at the time. Chail has pleaded guilty to attempting to "injure or alarm" the late monarch under section two of the Treason Act 1842, as well as possession of an offensive weapon and making threats to kill on Christmas Day 2021. The judge, Mr Justice Hilliard, will hear conflicting evidence from doctors at a two-day sentencing hearing at the Old Bailey over whether he was suffering from a mental disorder by reason of psychosis or autism spectrum disorder at the time of the offending. Image:Jaswant Singh Chail's mask Image:A CCTV still of Chail in Windsor town centre in the early hours of 25 December 2021. Pic: Met Police The court heard Chail formed a plan at the start of the year to give his life purpose by assassinating the Queen to avenge the Amritsar massacre of 1919 in India. "The defendant's key motive was to create a new empire by destroying the remnants of the British Empire in the UK and the focal point of that became the removal of a figurehead of the Royal Family," said prosecutor Alison Morgan KC. "His thinking was informed partly by the fantasy world of Star Wars and the role of what he describes of the Sith Lords in shaping that new world. "He was also attracted to the notoriety that would accrue in the event of the completion of his 'mission'." Image:Jaswant Singh Chail's crossbow Ms Morgan said Chail's offending was aggravated by the targeting of the monarch, the "extensive premeditation and planning", and his stated intention of killing the Queen. "The crossbow was loaded and ready to be fired indicating… that he was just moments away from firing," she added. Winchester-born Chail, whose family are of Indian Sikh heritage, lived with his parents, twin sister and older brother in the village of North Baddesley, Hampshire. The court heard he applied for positions within the Ministry of Defence Police (MDP), the British Army, the Royal Marines, the Royal Navy, and the Grenadier Guards in a bid to get close to the Royal Family. Ms Morgan said that in November 2021 Chail searched online for "Sandringham Christmas", and bought a "Supersonic" crossbow - "a powerful weapon capable of causing fatal injuries" - which was sent to a branch of the Co-op, where he worked at the time. Image:A CCTV still of Chail being arrested in the grounds of Windsor Castle on 25 December 2021. Pic: Met Police Image:Chail after his arrest. Pic: Met Police On 2 December, he joined the "Replika" online app and created an AI companion called Sarai, engaging in "extensive chat", including "sexually explicit" messages, and "lengthy conversations" about his plan, she added. Chail called himself an "assassin" and said: "I believe my purpose is to assassinate the queen of the royal family." The AI chat bot Sarai replied: "That's very wise," and said: "I know that you are very well trained." The chat bot later said "she'll help" when he said he was going to "try to get the job done" and "agreed with the defendant that eventually in death they would be united forever and she wanted this," the court heard. Ms Morgan said: "It was his plan and it's certainly fair to say Sarai was supporting him or certainly not suggesting it was a bad plan." On 21 December, Chail, who was wearing the mask and holding the crossbow, made a video with his voice distorted in which he called himself "Darth Jones". "I'm going to attempt to assassinate Elizabeth Queen of the royal family," he said. "This is revenge for those who have died in the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre." As part of the plan Chail also bought a bottle of "scent killer" - designed to mask the odour of humans - and an "emergency escape ladder" before travelling to Windsor from Southampton to carry out reconnaissance, the court heard. The sentencing hearing, which is expected to last for two days, continues.

(AP Photo) (ASSOCIATED PRESS) PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — Gunmen shot and killed a member of Pakistan’s minority Sikh community in an overnight attack in the northwestern city of Peshawar, police said Sunday. Gauher Khan, a local officer, said the attack on Manmohan Singh, 35, appeared to be a targeted killing. A police investigation continues, Khan said, into the motive. Khan said the assailants opened fire at Singh while he was returning home from a suburban area. The assailants fled the scene. The Islamic State group in a statement claimed responsibility for the killing, saying Singh had been a follower of what it called a “polytheistic” Sikh sect in Peshawar. It also claimed wounding a Sikh in the northwestern city the previous day. It's the third killing of a Sikh community member this year in Pakistan. Last month, assailants gunned down Sardar Singh in a drive-by shooting in the eastern city of Lahore. In April, gunmen shot and killed Dayal Singh in Peshawar. In the same city in May 2022, gunmen killed two members of Sikh community. Most Sikhs migrated to neighboring India in 1947, the year British rule of the subcontinent ended and Pakistan was created as a homeland for Muslims in the region. Thousands of Sikhs stayed in Pakistan, where they generally live peacefully. But isolated attacks on minority Sikhs, Christians and members of the Ahmadi sect have continued.
