AGAMPUR - Gurbani Terminology

Recommended Posts

AGAMPUR or AGAMPURA

By Major Gurmukh Singh

lit. city unapproachable or inaccessible (Skt. Agamya plus pur or pura). The word appears in one of the hymns of Guru Nanak in Asa measure where it is used to signify God’s abode or the ultimate state or stage of spiritual enlightenment and bliss. Another term used synonymously in the same hymn is nijaghar, lit. one’s own real home signifying the ultimate sphere of jivatima. The relevant stanza first raises the question: “Tell me how the city unapproachable is reached,†followed by the answer, “By discarding such measures as japu (mechanical repetition of God’s name), tapu (bodily mortification) and hath nigrahi (forced control of the senses).†Realizing the Guru’s Word in practice is prescribed as the right path to agampur (GG, 436).

does this imply that the jeev cannot become one with god, in the sense that the jeev cannot be god. Even though agampur is his original home, nijaghar, from where he was fractioned off from.

Although the jeev can become one with god in that he becomes god in minature, in his body. THe jeev cannot be god of the universe. So a jeev can become the likeness of god, meaning he dwells in agampur.

What are the view of others

Can a jeev become god of the universe?

Does the jeev mirror god in his own body therefore becoming a likeness of god?

Does the jeev become god in his own body and therefore become one with god?

But there is only one God and name of the city mentioned is stage of enlightenment. If a jeev reach that stage even in jeev's body, it becomes one with Almighty God. As last line in followed shabad says,"Nanak's God is pervading and permeating everywhere; wherever he looks, He is there."

If a person becomes Vaheguru as Advait Vedant claims, then do our Brahmgianis(including Gurus) merge and become one with Vaheguru and therefor no longer exist?

but Waheguru exists everywhere and at every fraction of time. So when Brahmgianis merge with Lord, they are part of Him and their hondh is always there with Lord. Their hondh is more than us mortals.
