Interesting. This psychological tool has been used by men of all civilisations for thousands of years...

One could argue, that a variant of this (placebo effect) could be the change that enters ones life when one takes any type of intitiation/makes a promise to enter a religious school/way of life....

Same way, a nocebo effect could be said to present when a devotee 'sins' and falls into a depression due to him thinking he has fallen from grace...

Self fulfilling prophecies are another interesting take on this subject...
