Power Unlimited : Relation With A Man Of God

Recommended Posts

I stumbled across this book "Power Unlimited : Relation with a Man of God" and found the chapter on 'The Word and Meditation' really inspiring and useful in clarifying the path of meditation and some of the teachings we come across. Highly recommended reading... Enjoy

‘When one tries to meditate there is a pressure to go inside, in a deep inner consciousness. But at first the mind takes it as a pressure to go to sleep, since the only kind of inner consciousness to which it is accustomed. The difficulty can be overcome if one perseveres – then gradually sleep changes to a inner conscious state.’

Guidance of Sadhna (spiritual practice):

The first step is that of simran – recollection or repetition of the Lord’s Name; the second state, bhajan , is characterised by devotion and worship; the state dhyan is towards concentration and absorption, and the fourth one leads to the state of samadhi, that is the state of unity with the Divine. One who take dhyan direct without first being steadfast in simran cannot easily get settled in dhyan.

  • The first step on the ladder of spirituality for the equipoise of intellect/mind, that is, absorption in the bliss of the Self, is Simran the recollection of the Name of the Lord, in the recesses of the heart, lips and tongue being tightly closed.

Concentration of the mind is necessary for recollection; freedom from thought waves helps this process. A pure mind alone can attain this state. And to be pure in mind is necessary to be pure in food, in behavior and association.

Freedom from the phenomenal pain of unreal imagination shall not be there unless the mind orientates itself towards the recollection of the Name of the Lord. Peace manifests when the mind, by discarding the illusory names and forms of imagination, establishes itself, with hope and love, in the ever-existent Name.

The control of mind is essential. An uncontrolled mind shall never be able to attune itself to the Name. With absorption in the Name of the Lord, the mind moves from the love of objects towards the love of God, and thereby all activities are viewed from the perspective of selflessness.

When the state of selflessness is reached, the buds of pure devotion begin to sprout in the heart. Such a noble feelings only blesses life. One who is desirous of the state of blessedness must, before anything else, follow the path of recollection of the Name.

The method of recollection needs to be followed correctly. That is some recollect the Name with the help of a beads, some recite the Name in a high tone, whereas others sing the Name. All these methods do give some kind of mental satisfaction, but the real peace of mind can be realized through, unwavering recollection, totally fixed within, in complete introversion. The method and effort both must be right. The real way of recollection is that which unites the mind and breath in perfect inhalation and exhalation.

One attains, through recollection of the Name, the Nameless State, that is, the sate of immersion in the indivisible Word. It is, therefore, essential to have faith in the Name.

The perfect ones (sages and saints) have projected many Names concerning the Absolute – but for spiritual practice a Single Name (Seed Word) is beneficial and effective (preferably one received from a true Guru).

We must remember that the ‘Ultimate Word’ is One, its conditions or states are many. To the extent one passes through these conditions, to the extent the state of inwardness is intensified… ‘Concentrate on the name with the integrated mind and body. Give up your doership. See the presence of the Lord in everything and lovingly remember Him. It is this attitude that brings blessings in life. All the impurities of (even) past lives are washed away. A person given to such recollection experiences with the Word Absolute.’

  • The second state: Bhajan (devotion): It is the condition in which there is experience of the Absolute Word and mind completely concentrates on it. In the state the nectar of God’s love is drunk and the mind hankers not after worldly pleasures.

Withdrawing itself from the things of the world, the mind orientates itself towards the Eternal Word, experiencing its various dimensions and aspects. In this state everything is seen in terms of Divine Will, and there is negation of self-ego.

It is above the lower part of the body, at the root of the nose, in the middle of the forehead (between the eyebrows) that the intellect experiences the Word.

If a spiritual practitioner exposes this state or tries to show miracles, he shall be deprived of Divine Bliss.

To the extent stability in this spiritual practice is achieved, the luminosity of the Reality within is experienced progressively. With freedom from bodily wants, the soul remains merged with the love of God. A person of this state must cultivate such qualities as forgiveness, mercy patience, humility, selflessness etc… Much time must be spent in the remembrance of the Lord, with less of food, less of sleep and less of worldly business.

‘Absorb in that bliss that results from devotion, move in the world with modesty, have more love in remembrance of God than in things of the world’

  • The third stage is Dhyan (contemplation): This is the state when the mind, leaving aside all concepts and designs, gets absorbed in the Absolute Word and experiences only the bliss supreme.

‘Stabilised in the experience of the Absolute Word, one hears internally tunes of various types, see lightening within, cuts oneself asunder from the world. All actions are surrendered to the will of the Lord, maintains equanimity towards diverse fruits of action, and lives a very natural life, without desires.’

One established in this state is a yogi. He is a true knower. His mind is away from wants and plans; he stays with his real self. He envies none, rather loves all.

With steadfastness in contemplation one hears within indivisible Word rather loudly. He sees the whole world as the reflection of the Supreme Light. Nothing attracts him except the Name of the Lord.

Contemplation of God is the real blessing. It comes on giving up all desires. There has to be complete surrender to God’s will…. No one in this state should be inclined to show any miracle.

When longing for all actions (for self) dies, and one dedicates his life to helping others, considering the whole world as God’s manifestation, himself with a sense of non-doership and stable in bliss, such a composed, patient person has reached the state of Samadhi.

  • The fourth state: Samadhi (enstatis): In this state of concentration all concentration all consciousness of the outer world is transcended; the intellect immerses itself in the eternal Word of the Absolute and all the ego-related fantasies come to an end. It is a state of experience in which luminous Consciousness alone is known.

The one who has achieved this Transcendent state of being, experiences nothing but the Absolute. He is the knower of Brahman, remains established in the eternal Sound of the Absolute. See the world as manifestation of the Lord.

He maintains perfect equanimity with all circumstances, above the polarity of pain and pleasure. Within him is total renunciation. It is the state in which one remains immersed in one’s essence.

One who has, through tapas (penance), established firmly himself in the Lord and has, by going inward, ruptured all association with the objective world – such a person achieves the condition of non-duality that is characterised by pure luminosity.

That person alone finds himself established in the Sound Absolute who, all the time, perceives body to be perishable and who, having realised freedom from the desires of the body, remains engrossed in contemplation of Self.

Only that person will attain the state of enstatis who considers indivisible and imperishable Reality to be the substratum of everything.

Summary: Be selfless in your devotion to God. be firm in you faith in God. Resolve that you will serve all creatures with selfless mind. Give up the luxuries of the world. Recognize that everything belongs to God. Wit a firm mind engage in the recollection of the Lord. Those who follow such a path obtain real devotion, faith, concentration and Samadhi. Therefore, lead a pure life so that, while living, you may be able to cut asunder the knots of bondage.

On Technique:

Meditation is an individual, rather personal, approach towards unity with God. One may select and adopt the best way, as suits one.

  • Sit on a simple asan. Sit in any pose you comfortably can. Keep back and chest straight in any case.
  • Breath comfortably; inhale and exhale peacefully.
  • Carry, along with the breath, the Name (of the Lord) from the tip of the nose to the centre of the navel gently, after a small comfortable rest-pause there, do the same thing on the return journey of the breath. The air we breath in is cool and fresh, while the air we breath out is warm.
  • Do not puff up the belly unnecessarily with ingoing breath, nor strain yourself with outgoing breath. Let it be as natural a process as possible.
  • Breath is the carrier of prana, the subtle life-force which pervades the whole body. Attention ahs to be focused on this subtle element / essence, joining it with the Name, this combining the three – the delicate prana, the complete surat (mindful attention) and the adopted Name. This triad – this sacred trinity – is the secret of Yoga. (In advanced state of meditation is focused on the point between the two eyes, root of nose.)
  • This auspicious combination, when regularly practiced, makes the movement of breath balanced and deep, as well as sufficiently slow without effort.
  • When this practice becomes mature and firm, it leads to the opening of Kundalini (rising of the latent force, coiled at the base of the spinal cord) automatically One also overcomes sleep, indolence, appetite and thirst.

Experiences

  • Firstly the Word – Shabad/Anhad (unstruck heavenily sound) is heard internally, at the navel point (that is the beginning of Simran). It reaches the throat with practice (that is the practice of Bhajan); later it resounds in the Trikuti – center point between two eyes (then it is started of Dhyana) - leading to total contemplation in advanced states of concentration. Last it dissolved in Kapal, to of the head. This is Samadhi. The intellect then gets absorbed in the Braham – the Divine in us. Complete void – Shunia or Sunn – prevails there. A deep, deep silence with it own sound and light! (This is enlightenment.)

Verses on technique of meditation:

Firstly sit straight as convenient, and stablize the mind and senses.

Keep mouth and eyes closed and tongue motionless, recalling the true Name (seed Word) within.

The breathing should be as slow, steady and effortless as possible, and the sacred Name blended with the flow of breath, and the sacred Name blended with the flow of breath in and out with unflickering concentration.

The movement ration between outgoing and incoming breath is 12 and 16 (measurement in fingers put together) Their balancing helps attain state of ‘samenesss’.

While inhaling let the impulse – along with name go to the center of the navel and the exhalation process will start from there.

Hold the breath (for a little while) at the navel center, recalling the true Name, throughout.

When the breath and surat (conscious attention) are combined, that is the first experience of the Word (Primordial Sound).

When the breath and surat are in conjunction, vibrations are generated and one experiences sensation of reverberating sound at the navel center.

The navel ‘lotus’ lights up and twang of the Word is heard. One starts on the journey to own real abode, leaving behind the uproar of thoughts/conceptions.

As one joins attention to the flow of breath from moment to moment, one experiences ecstasy of the Word (Radiant Resonance).

The breath resounds with all the time. Understanding this secret leads to crossing over. (Success achieving / emancipation)

The air we breath is manifestation of Braham – the Supreme Being; indeed full treasure of spiritual knowledge and contemplation.

In Part Conclusion:

Watch the movement of breath and repeat the Name (of the Lord) along with it. Then the Limitless, Everpresent / Ever witnessing will be perceived within.

When the breath and attention are joined together and the mind merges with them, the resonant Word with brilliance of billions of suns – shines within.

On hearing the Word, the mind is drowned in delight; rising above desires it achieves a state of supreme. There is no Yoga beyond it; enjoy the essence arising from the togetherness of the breath and Word.

Ida Pingala Sukhmana, Chakras and Kundalini

As one focuses attention on the track of breath within, the dormant coiled kundalini is easily activated.

Ida, Pingula and Sukhmana (the left, right and central channels) meet above the point between the two eye brows. Sushmana or Sukhmana is the main nadi in the very centre of the spine. It is the passage through which Kundalini Energy rises. The two ganglionic chains – main nadis – are on the either side of the spinal cord: ida on the left and Pingula on the right – also called Chandra (moon or cool) and Surya (sun or hot) Nadi respectively)

In the portion of the body below the throat called - the pind – there are two types of currents, the incoming breath is cool while the outgoing breath is hot, their respective proportion being 16 and 12 ‘fingers’ (a sort of measure). This indicates a pair of opposites which has to be balanced.

On stirring the exhalation and inhalation, the Sukhmana the central channel, gets filled up with air.

With the Sukhmana filled with Air, the primordial Resonnance will then rise up and break the fort of illusion.

When the mind and breath mingle into one, the reverberating sound rises through the Sukhmana to the top of the head where it resounds.

The sound primordial while going up pierces through six chakras (plexsuses), and passing through the trikuti (the mid centre of the two eyes) it goes up the apex of head.

Elixir:

From the navel centre (likened to a lotus) elixir drops and gets filled in the Sukhmana.

When the breath is going out let it pull up the base of the spinal cord squeezing the navel centre comfortably, thus the dormant serpent power will get activated and release the flow of the elixir.

In the unfathomable interior burst ‘the pot’ containing the elixir; (emitting) light of nonparallel brilliancy.

Hail to the elixir flowing, a rare guru-orientated person can drink it in.

(Evidently there is a mysterious connection between the source, its pumping up, its storage, and then its pouring down. It seems a symbolic description of something highly precious within us of which were are oblivious. Only a highly realised Yogi could possibly experience and explain it).

On opening of the Sukhmana the Word awakens (becomes more perceptible) within. One is fortunate in achieving this state, following the advice from some Realised Soul.

Thousands petalled lotus (top of the head) blooms up; surat (conscious attention) plays with nad (celestial sound).

A glimpse of the Final State of Bliss

The automatic reverberation of the unbroken primordial Divine Sound (Nad) within goes on day and night; it remains constantly perceptible, permeating the mind completely.

Consciousness loses itself in the throb of primordial resonance and one attains emancipation, shedding of all illusions.

While seated on earth, with Surat focused in the Kapal (top of head), one experiences knowledge of emancipation, as the Divine Word arises, and there is intense radiance. In this state the individual consciousness merges with the universal consciousness.

Surat on absorption in Divine radiant resonance rises to the zone of dead silence (inside the head). Then the Creator, Lord of the Universe, is visible.

One recognising the Word within, the mind enters the state of void complete silence. Thus is our true-self full of immense bliss.
