chatanga1 Posted April 26, 2019 Report Share Posted April 26, 2019 ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ Dohira ਗਬਿੰਦ ਚੰਦ ਨਰੇਸ ਕੇ ਮਾਧਵਨਲ ਨਿਜੁ ਮੀਤ ॥ Gobind Chand Naresh had a friend called Madhwan Nal. ਪੜੇ ਬ੍ਯਾਕਰਨ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਖਟ ਕੋਕ ਸਾਰ ਸੰਗੀਤ ॥੧॥ He was adept in grammar, six Shastras, Kob Shastra and was proficient in music.(1) ਚੌਪਈ ॥ Chaupaee ਮਧੁਰ ਮਧੁਰ ਧੁਨਿ ਬੇਨੁ ਬਜਾਵੈ ॥ ਜੋ ਕੋਊ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਸ੍ਰਵਨਨ ਸੁਨਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ He used to play flute very melodiously; any woman listening to it, ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਅਧਿਕ ਮਤ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਝੂਲੈ ॥ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਕੀ ਸਕਲ ਤਾਹਿ ਸੁਧਿ ਭੂਲੇ ॥੨॥ Would forget all her household work and succumb to its ecstasy.(2) ਪੁਰ ਬਾਸੀ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਪੈ ਚਲਿ ਆਏ ॥ ਆਇ ਰਾਇ ਤਨ ਬਚਨ ਸੁਨਾਏ ॥ The inhabitants of the village came to the Raja and requested, ਕੈ ਮਾਧਵਨਲ ਕੌ ਅਬ ਮਰਿਯੈ ॥ ਨਾ ਤੋ ਯਾ ਕਹ ਦੇਸ ਨਿਕਰਿਯੈ ॥੩॥ ‘Either Madhwan may be killed or should be banish:d from the village,(3) ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ Dohira ਇਹ ਹਮਾਰੀ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਨ ਕੇ ਲੇਤ ਚਿਤ ਬਿਰਮਾਇ ॥ ‘Because he allures the minds of our women. ਜੌ ਹਮ ਸਭ ਕੌ ਕਾਢਿਯੈ ਤੌ ਇਹ ਰਖਿਯੈ ਰਾਹਿ ॥੪॥ ‘Alternatively, you may please retain him and direct us to go away.’(4) ਚੌਪਈ ॥ Chaupaee ਤੋਰਿ ਰਾਵ ਤਬ ਜਲਜ ਮੰਗਾਏ ॥ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਬਿਛੌਨਾ ਕੀ ਬਿਛਵਾਏ ॥ Raja, then, sent them away, and collected the leaves of lotus, ਸਕਲ ਸਖੀ ਤਿਹ ਪਰ ਬੈਠਾਈ ॥ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਾ ਬਨਾਈ ॥੫॥ He made all the maids to seat over them in various postures.(5) ਮਾਧਵਨਲ ਕੌ ਬੋਲਿ ਪਠਾਇਸ ॥ ਤਵਨ ਸਭਾ ਭੀਤਰ ਬੈਠਾਇਸ ॥ He called Madhwan Nal and asked him to settle down among the audience. ਰੀਝਿ ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਤਬ ਬੇਨ ਬਜਾਈ ॥ ਸਭ ਇਸਤ੍ਰਿਨ ਕੇ ਚਿਤ ਸੁ ਭਾਈ ॥੬॥ He played the flute; all the women were captivated.(6) ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ Dohira ਸਭ ਅਬਲਾ ਮੋਹਿਤ ਭਈ ਨਾਦ ਸ੍ਰਵਨ ਸੁਨਿ ਪਾਇ ॥ As soon as the music overwhelmed, the women were entranced, ਸਭਹਿਨ ਕੇ ਤਨ ਸੌ ਗਏ ਕਮਲ ਪਤ੍ਰ ਲਪਟਾਇ ॥੭॥ And the leaves of lotus flowers stuck to their bodies.(7) ਚੌਪਈ ॥ Chaupaee ਮਾਧਵਨਲ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਤੁਰਤੁ ਨਿਕਾਰਿਯੋ ॥ Raja immediately slipped Madhwan Nal out and, ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਜਾਨਿ ਜਿਯ ਤੇ ਨਹੀ ਮਾਰਿਯੋ ॥ Being of Brahmin caste, did not let him die. ਕਾਮਾਵਤੀ ਨਗਰ ਚਲਿ ਆਯੋ ॥ He (Brahmin) walked away and came to Kamwati, the town of Cupid, ਕਾਮਕੰਦਲਾ ਸੌ ਹਿਤ ਭਾਯੋ ॥੮॥ There he was fancied by the Kaamkandla (Cupid’s female counterpart).(8) ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ Dohira ਕਾਮ ਸੈਨ ਰਾਜਾ ਜਹਾ ਤਹ ਦਿਜ ਪਹੂੰਚ੍ਯੋ ਜਾਇ ॥ The Brahmin reached the place, of which, Kam (literally Cupid) Sen Was the Raja, ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਤੀਨਿ ਸੈ ਸਾਠਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਨਾਚਤ ਜਹਾ ਬਨਾਇ ॥੯॥ In whose court three hundred and sixty damsels used to dance.(9) ਚੌਪਈ ॥ Chaupaee ਮਾਧਵ ਤੌਨ ਸਭਾ ਮਹਿ ਆਯੋ ॥ ਆਨਿ ਰਾਵ ਕੌ ਸੀਸ ਝੁਕਾਯੋ ॥ Madhwan reached the court and bowed his head in obeisance. ਸੂਰਬੀਰ ਬੈਠੇ ਬਹੁ ਜਹਾ ॥ ਨਾਚਤ ਕਾਮਕੰਦਲਾ ਤਹਾ ॥੧੦॥ A number of valiant ones were present there and Kaamkandla was dancing.(10) ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ Dohira ਚੰਦਨ ਕੀ ਤਨ ਕੰਚੁਕੀ ਕਾਮਾ ਕਸੀ ਬਨਾਇ ॥ Very tightly, Kama (Kaamkandla) had worn a sandalwood-scented bodice, ਅੰਗਿਯਾ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਕੋ ਲਖੈ ਚੰਦਨ ਲਖ੍ਯੋ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੧੧॥ The bodice was visible but not the sandalwood.(11) ਚੰਦਨ ਕੀ ਲੈ ਬਾਸਨਾ ਭਵਰ ਬਹਿਠ੍ਯੋ ਆਇ ॥ Lured by the aroma of sandalwood, a black-bee came and sat over it. ਸੋ ਤਿਨ ਕੁਚ ਕੀ ਬਾਯੁ ਤੇ ਦੀਨੌ ਤਾਹਿ ਉਠਾਇ ॥੧੨॥ She jerked her bodice and made the bee fly away.(l2) ਚੌਪਈ ॥ Chaupaee ਇਹ ਸੁ ਭੇਦ ਬਿਪ ਨੈ ਲਹਿ ਲਯੋ ॥ ਰੀਝਤ ਅਧਿਕ ਚਿਤ ਮਹਿ ਭਯੋ ॥ Brahmin observed all the interlude and felt very desirous, ਅਮਿਤ ਦਰਬੁ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਲੀਨੋ ॥ ਸੋ ਲੈ ਕਾਮਕੰਦਲਹਿ ਦੀਨੋ ॥੧੩॥ And all the wealth he was rewarded by Raja, he gave away to Kaamkandla.(13) ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ Dohira ਅਮਿਤ ਦਰਬੁ ਹਮ ਜੋ ਦਯੋ ਸੋ ਇਹ ਦਯੋ ਲੁਟਾਇ ॥ (The Raja thought) ‘All the wealth which I handed over to him, he has given away. ਐਸੇ ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਫਜੂਲ ਕੋ ਮੋਹਿ ਨ ਰਾਖ੍ਯੋ ਜਾਇ ॥੧੪॥ ‘Such a foolish Brahmin priest could not be retained by me.’(l4) ਚੌਪਈ ॥ Chaupaee ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਜਾਨਿ ਜਿਯ ਤੇ ਨਹਿ ਮਰਿਯੈ ॥ ਇਹ ਪੁਰ ਤੇ ਇਹ ਤੁਰਤੁ ਨਿਕਰਿਯੈ ॥ ‘Being a Brahmin he should not be killed but he must be banished from the village, ਜਾ ਕੇ ਦੁਰਿਯੋ ਧਾਮ ਲਹਿ ਲੀਜੈ ॥ ਟੂਕ ਅਨੇਕ ਤਵਨ ਕੋ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੧੫॥ ‘And any person who shelters him, he would be cut into pieces.’(15) ਯਹ ਸਭ ਭੇਦ ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਸੁਨਿ ਪਾਯੋ ॥ ਚਲਿਯੋ ਚਲਿਯੋ ਕਾਮਾ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਆਯੋ ॥ When Brahmin learned about this secret proclamation, he instantly came to the house of that woman, ਮੋ ਪਰ ਕੋਪ ਅਧਿਕ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੀਨੋ ॥ ਤਿਹ ਹਿਤ ਧਾਮ ਤਿਹਾਰੋ ਚੀਨੋ ॥੧੬॥ (And said) ‘As the Raja is very angry with me, therefore, I have come to your house.’(16) ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ Dohira ਸੁਨਤ ਬਚਨ ਕਾਮਾ ਤੁਰਤ ਦਿਜ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਲਯੋ ਦੁਰਾਇ ॥ Listening to this, Kama hid him in her house, ਰਾਜਾ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦ੍ਯਾ ਕਰੀ ਤਾਹਿ ਗਰੇ ਸੋ ਲਾਇ ॥੧੭॥ And she flew into a rage and criticised Raja.(17) ਕਾਮਾ ਬਾਚ ॥ ਚੌਪਈ ॥ Chaupaee ਧ੍ਰਿਗ ਇਹ ਰਾਇ ਭੇਦ ਨਹਿ ਜਾਨਤ ॥ (She pronounced) ‘Curse be to Raja who did not grasp the secret. ਤੁਮ ਸੇ ਚਤੁਰਨ ਸੌ ਰਿਸਿ ਠਾਨਤ ॥ Became jealous of wise ones like you. ਮਹਾ ਮੂੜ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੋ ਕਾ ਕਹਿਯੈ ॥ ‘What can we say about such a blockhead. ਯਾ ਪਾਪੀ ਕੇ ਦੇਸ ਨ ਰਹਿਯੈ ॥੧੮॥ One should not live in the country of such a vice-man.(l8) ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ Dohira ਚਲੌ ਤ ਏਕੈ ਮਗੁ ਚਲੌ ਰਹੇ ਰਹੌ ਤਿਹ ਗਾਉ ॥ ‘Corne, let us take the same path and live side by side, ਨਿਸੁ ਦਿਨ ਰਟੌ ਬਿਹੰਗ ਜ੍ਯੋ ਮੀਤ ਤਿਹਾਰੋ ਨਾਉ ॥੧੯॥ ‘And I will always remember you and remain with you.’(19) ਬਿਰਹ ਬਾਨ ਮੋ ਤਨ ਗਡੇ ਕਾ ਸੋ ਕਰੋ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥ ‘I have been pierced with the arrow of separation, how could I remonstrate? ਤਨਕ ਅਗਨਿ ਕੋ ਸਿਵ ਭਏ ਜਰੌ ਸੰਭਾਰਿ ਸੰਭਾਰਿ ॥੨੦॥ ‘Slowly and steadily, I am scorching in the fire ofthis estrangement.(20) ਆਜੁ ਸਖੀ ਮੈ ਯੌ ਸੁਨ੍ਯੋ ਪਹੁ ਫਾਟਤ ਪਿਯ ਗੌਨ ॥ ‘Oh, rny friends, I have heard that at the day break my lover will go away. ਪਹੁ ਹਿਯਰੇ ਝਗਰਾ ਪਰਿਯੋ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਫਟਿ ਹੈ ਕੌਨ ॥੨੧॥ ‘The point is who will enact first (his leaving and rising of Sun).(21) ਮਾਧਵ ਬਾਚ ॥ Madhwan Talk ਚੌਪਈ ॥ Chaupaee ਤੁਮ ਸੁਖ ਸੋ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਹ੍ਯਾ ਰਹੋ ॥ ਹਮ ਕੋ ਬੇਗਿ ਬਿਦਾ ਮੁਖ ਕਹੋ ॥ ‘You, the pretty one, stay here in bliss and bid me good-bye. ਹਮਰੋ ਕਛੂ ਤਾਪ ਨਹ ਕਰਿਯਹੁ ॥ ਨਿਤ ਰਾਮ ਕੋ ਨਾਮ ਸੰਭਰਿਯਹੁ ॥੨੨॥ ‘Do not be alarmed about me and meditate on god Rama’s name.’(22) ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ Dohira ਸੁਨਤ ਬਚਨ ਕਾਮਾ ਤਬੈ ਭੂਮਿ ਪਰੀ ਮੁਰਛਾਇ ॥ Hearing the advice, the lady became unconscious and fell flat on the ground, ਜਨੁ ਘਾਯਲ ਘਾਇਨ ਲਗੇ ਗਿਰੈ ਉਠੈ ਬਰਰਾਇ ॥੨੩॥ Like the injured man, tried to get up but fell down again.(23) ਸੋਰਠਾ ॥ Sortha ਅਧਿਕ ਬਿਰਹ ਕੇ ਸੰਗ ਪੀਤ ਬਰਨ ਕਾਮਾ ਭਈ ॥ In the wake of separation, Kama looked anaemic. ਰਕਤ ਨ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਅੰਗ ਚਲਿਯੋ ਮੀਤ ਚੁਰਾਇ ਚਿਤ ॥੨੪॥ As the paramour had gone after stealing her heart; she looked totally drained.(24) ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ ਟਾਂਕ ਤੋਲ ਤਨ ਨ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਮਾਸਾ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਨ ਮਾਸ ॥ ਬਿਰਹਿਨ ਕੌ ਤੀਨੋ ਭਲੇ ਹਾਡ ਚਾਮ ਅਰੁ ਸ੍ਵਾਸ ॥੨੫॥ ਅਤਿ ਕਾਮਾ ਲੋਟਤ ਧਰਨਿ ਮਾਧਵਨਲ ਕੇ ਹੇਤ ॥ The separation of Madhwan made her to roll over on the ground, ਟੂਟੋ ਅਮਲ ਅਫੀਮਿਯਹਿ ਜਨੁ ਪਸਵਾਰੇ ਲੇਤ ॥੨੬॥ Like an addict of opium, she tossed around in the dust.(26) ਮਿਲਤ ਨੈਨ ਨਹਿ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਤ ਜਾਨਤ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪਤੰਗ ॥ ਛੂਟਤ ਬਿਰਹ ਬਿਯੋਗ ਤੇ ਹੋਮਤ ਅਪਨੋ ਅੰਗ ॥੨੭॥ ਕਾਮਾ ਬਾਚ ॥ Kama Talk ਚੌਪਈ ॥ Chaupaee ਖੰਡ ਖੰਡ ਕੈ ਤੀਰਥ ਕਰਿਹੌ ॥ ਬਾਰਿ ਅਨੇਕ ਆਗਿ ਮੈ ਬਰਿਹੌ ॥ ‘I will go around the pilgrim places and, again and again, will burn in fire of alienation. ਕਾਸੀ ਬਿਖੈ ਕਰਵਤਿਹਿ ਪੈਹੌ ॥ ਢੂੰਢਿ ਮੀਤ ਤੋ ਕੌ ਤਊ ਲੈਹੌ ॥੨੮॥ ‘I will face the saw at Kanshi but will never rest till I find you.(28) ਅੜਿਲ ॥ Arril ਜਹਾ ਪਿਯਰਵਾ ਚਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਤਿਤਹੀ ਚਲੇ ॥ ‘Where there is love, there is my life. ਸਕਲ ਸਿਥਿਲ ਭਏ ਅੰਗ ਸੰਗ ਜੈ ਹੈ ਭਲੇ ॥ ‘All my body limbs are getting exhausted. ਮਾਧਵਨਲ ਕੌ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਸੋ ਜਾਨਿਯੈ ॥ ‘I need the charm of Madhwan, ਹੋ ਜਾਤੌ ਲਗਤ ਉਚਾਟ ਸਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨਿਯੈ ॥੨੯॥ ‘As my heart is yearning without him.’(29) ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ Dohira ਜੋ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਬਾਛਾ ਕਰਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਹਰੈ ਜਮ ਮੋਹਿ ॥ ‘If the god of death takes out my life in your remembrance, ਮਰੇ ਪਰਾਤ ਚੁਰੈਲ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਚਮਕਿ ਚਿਤੈਹੌ ਤੋਹਿ ॥੩੦॥ ‘I will become witch and keep on roaming and searching for you.(30) ਬਰੀ ਬਿਰਹ ਕੀ ਆਗਿ ਮੈ ਜਰੀ ਰਖੈ ਹੌ ਨਾਉ ॥ ‘Burning in the fire of passion, ਭਾਂਤਿ ਜਰੀ ਕੀ ਬਰੀ ਕੀ ਢਿਗ ਤੇ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨ ਜਾਉ ॥੩੧॥ I will adopt my name as “the burnt one”.(31) ਸਾਚ ਕਹਤ ਹੈ ਬਿਰਹਨੀ ਰਹੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਸੌ ਪਾਗਿ ॥ ‘I say truthfully that a disengaged one burns in love, ਡਰਤ ਬਿਰਹ ਕੀ ਅਗਨਿ ਸੌ ਜਰਤ ਕਾਠ ਕੀ ਆਗਿ ॥੩੨॥ ‘Exactly like the dry wood blazes with crackling sounds.’(32) ਤਬ ਮਾਧਵਨਲ ਉਠਿ ਚਲਿਯੋ ਭਯੋ ਪਵਨ ਕੋ ਭੇਸ ॥ In the meantime, Madhwan had flown away like air, ਜਸ ਧੁਨਿ ਸੁਨਿ ਸਿਰ ਧੁਨਿ ਗਯੋ ਬਿਕ੍ਰਮ ਜਹਾ ਨਰੇਸ ॥੩੩॥ And reached there where the reverend Bikrimajeet used to sit.(33) ਚੌਪਈ ॥ Chaupaee ਬਿਕ੍ਰਮ ਜਹਾ ਨਿਤਿ ਚਲਿ ਆਵੈ ॥ ਪੂਜਿ ਗੌਰਜਾ ਕੌ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਜਾਵੈ ॥ Bikrim used to visit the place and perform prayers to goddess gory. ਮੰਦਿਰ ਊਚ ਧੁਜਾ ਫਹਰਾਹੀ ॥ ਫਟਕਾਚਲ ਲਖਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਲਜਾਹੀ ॥੩੪॥ The temple was lofty and its grace was unsurpassable.(34) ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ Dohira ਤਿਹੀ ਠੌਰਿ ਮਾਧਵ ਗਯੋ ਦੋਹਾ ਲਿਖ੍ਯੋ ਬਨਾਇ ॥ Madhwan went there and wrote a couplet at the place, ਜੌ ਬਿਕ੍ਰਮ ਇਹ ਬਾਚਿ ਹੈ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਹੋ ਮੋਰ ਉਪਾਇ ॥੩੫॥ (Thinking) ‘When Bikrim reads it he will suggest some resolve for me.‘(35) ਜੇ ਨਰ ਰੋਗਨ ਸੌ ਗ੍ਰਸੇ ਤਿਨ ਕੋ ਹੋਤ ਉਪਾਉ ॥ If a person is sick he can be suggested some remedy, ਬਿਰਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਦੋਖਨ ਜੇ ਗ੍ਰਸੇ ਤਿਨ ਕੋ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਬਚਾਉ ॥੩੬॥ But for a person who is suffering from love-sickness, there is no sanctuary.(36) ਚੌਪਈ ॥ Chaupaee ਬਿਕ੍ਰਮ ਸੈਨਿ ਤਹਾ ਚਲਿ ਆਯੋ ॥ ਆਨ ਗੌਰਜਾ ਕੌ ਸਿਰ ਨ੍ਯਾਯੋ ॥ Bikrim came there in the evening and paid his obeisance to the goddess Gory, ਬਾਚਿ ਦੋਹਰਾ ਕੋ ਚਕਿ ਰਹਿਯੋ ॥ ਕੋ ਬਿਰਹੀ ਆਯੋ ਹ੍ਯਾ ਕਹਿਯੋ ॥੩੭॥ He read the couplet and inquired if there had come some love-sick person.(37) ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ Dohira ਕੋ ਬਿਰਹੀ ਆਯੋ ਹ੍ਯਾ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਲੇਹੁ ਬੁਲਾਇ ॥ (She pronounced) ‘The one who is love-sick, has come here, call ਜੋ ਵਹੁ ਕਹੈ ਸੋ ਹੌ ਕਰੌ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਜਿਯਨ ਉਪਾਇ ॥੩੮॥ Him. ‘Whatever he desires, I will fulfi1.’(38) ਚੌਪਈ ॥ Chaupaee ਬਿਕ੍ਰਮ ਮਾਧਵ ਬੋਲਿ ਪਠਾਯੋ ॥ ਆਦਰੁ ਦੈ ਆਸਨੁ ਬੈਠਾਯੋ ॥ Bikrim called Madhwan and asked him respectfully to be seated. ਕਹਸਿ ਦਿਜਾਗ੍ਯਾ ਦੇਹੁ ਸੁ ਕਰਿਹੌ ॥ (Madhwan said) ‘Whatever the Brahmin priest orders, ਪ੍ਰਾਨਨ ਲਗੇ ਹੇਤੁ ਤੁਹਿ ਲਰਿਹੋ ॥੩੯॥ I will abide by, even I may have to fight,’(39) ਜਬ ਮਾਧਵ ਕਹਿ ਭੇਦ ਸੁਨਾਯੋ ॥ When Madhwan told the whole story, ਤਬ ਬਿਕ੍ਰਮ ਸਭ ਸੈਨ ਬੁਲਾਯੋ ॥ Bikrim called all his army. ਸਾਜੇ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਕੌਚ ਤਨ ਧਾਰੇ ॥ Arming themselves and putting the armour ਕਾਮਵਤੀ ਕੀ ਓਰ ਸਿਧਾਰੇ ॥੪੦॥ They commenced march to the direction of Kamwati.(40) ਸੋਰਠਾ ॥ Sortha ਦੂਤ ਪਠਾਯੋ ਏਕ ਕਾਮਸੈਨ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸੌ ਕਹੈ ॥ He sent his emissary to (Raja) Kam Sen to give him the message, ਕਾਮਕੰਦਲਾ ਏਕ ਦੈ ਸਭ ਦੇਸ ਉਬਾਰਿਯੈ ॥੪੧॥ ‘To save your country, you handover Kaamkandla.’(41) ਚੌਪਈ ॥ Chaupaee ਕਾਮਵਤੀ ਭੀਤਰ ਦੂਤਾਯੋ ॥ ਕਾਮਸੈਨ ਜੂ ਕੋ ਸਿਰੁ ਨ੍ਯਾਯੋ ॥ Kamwati learned what the emissary had conveyed to Kam Sen. ਬਿਕ੍ਰਮ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਸੁ ਤਾਹਿ ਸੁਨਾਵਾ ॥ ਅਧਿਕ ਰਾਵ ਕੋ ਦੁਖ ਉਪਜਾਵਾ ॥੪੨॥ The message from Bikrim had distressed the Raja.(42) ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ Dohira ਨਿਸਿਸਿ ਚੜੇ ਦਿਨ ਕੇ ਭਏ ਨਿਸਿ ਰਵਿ ਕਰੈ ਉਦੋਤ ॥ (Raja,) ‘Moon may shine during the day and sun may come at the night, ਕਾਮਕੰਦਲਾ ਕੋ ਦਿਯਬ ਤਊ ਨ ਹਮ ਤੇ ਹੋਤ ॥੪੩॥ ‘But I will not be able to give Kamkandla away.’(43) ਦੂਤੋ ਬਾਚ ॥ ਭੁਜੰਗ ਛੰਦ ॥ Bhujang Chhand ਸੁਨੋ ਰਾਜ ਕਹਾ ਨਾਰਿ ਕਾਮਾ ਬਿਚਾਰੀ ॥ (The emissary,) ‘Listen Raja, what magnificence is there in Kaamkandla, ਕਹਾ ਗਾਠਿ ਬਾਧੀ ਤੁਮੈ ਜਾਨਿ ਪ੍ਯਾਰੀ ॥ ‘That you are protecting her tied to your own self, ਕਹੀ ਮਾਨਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਹਾ ਨਾਹਿ ਭਾਖੋ ॥ ‘Beeding to my advice, don’t keep her with you, ਇਨੈ ਦੈ ਮਿਲੌ ਤਾਹਿ ਕੌ ਗਰਬ ਰਾਖੋ ॥੪੪॥ ‘And by sending her away, protect your honour.(44) ਹਠੀ ਹੈ ਹਮਾਰੀ ਸੁ ਤੁਮਹੂੰ ਪਛਾਨੋ ॥ ਦਿਸਾ ਚਾਰਿ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਸਦਾ ਲੋਹ ਮਾਨੋ ॥ ‘We persist and you must recognise, as our potency is known in all the four directions (of the world).’ ਬਲੀ ਦੇਵ ਆਦੇਵ ਜਾ ਕੌ ਬਖਾਨੈ ॥ ਕਹਾ ਰੋਕ ਤੂ ਤੌਨ ਸੋ ਜੁਧੁ ਠਾਨੈ ॥੪੫॥ ਬਜੀ ਦੁੰਦਭੀ ਦੀਹ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਭਾਰੇ ॥ ਜਬੈ ਦੂਤ ਕਟੁ ਬੈਨ ਐਸੇ ਉਚਾਰੇ ॥ The drums started to beat war cries when the emissary spoke harshly. ਹਠਿਯੋ ਬੀਰ ਹਾਠੌ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਜੁਧ ਮੰਡੋ ॥ The obstinate Raja pronounced the declaration of war and ਕਹਾ ਬਿਕ੍ਰਮਾ ਕਾਲ ਕੋ ਖੰਡ ਖੰਡੋ ॥੪੬॥ Determined to cut Bikrim into pieces.(46) ਚੜਿਯੋ ਲੈ ਅਨੀ ਕੋ ਬਲੀ ਬੀਰ ਭਾਰੇ ॥ ਖੰਡੇਲੇ ਬਘੇਲੇ ਪੰਧੇਰੇ ਪਵਾਰੇ ॥ Taking with him the brave Khandelas, Baghelas and Pandheras, he raided, ਗਹਰਵਾਰ ਚੌਹਾਨ ਗਹਲੌਤ ਦੌਰੈ ॥ ਮਹਾ ਜੰਗ ਜੋਧਾ ਜਿਤੇ ਨਾਹਿ ਔਰੈ ॥੪੭॥ And he had in his army Raharwars, Chohans and Ghalauts, who had taken part in great fighting.(47) ਸੁਨ੍ਯੋ ਬਿਕ੍ਰਮਾ ਬੀਰ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਬੁਲਾਏ ॥ ਠਟੇ ਠਾਟ ਗਾੜੇ ਚਲੇ ਖੇਤ ਆਏ ॥ When jikrim heard the news, he collected all the intrepid ones. ਦੁਹੂੰ ਓਰ ਤੇ ਸੂਰ ਸੈਨਾ ਉਮੰਗੈ ॥ They both fought valiantly, ਮਿਲੇ ਜਾਇ ਜਮੁਨਾ ਮਨੌ ਧਾਇ ਗੰਗੈ ॥੪੮॥ And amalgamated like river Jamuna and Gang.(48) ਕਿਤੇ ਬੀਰ ਕਰਵਾਰਿ ਕਾਢੈ ਚਲਾਵੈ ॥ ਕਿਤੇ ਚਰਮ ਪੈ ਘਾਇ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਬਚਾਵੈ ॥ ਕਿਤੋ ਬਰਮ ਪੈ ਚਰਮ ਰੁਪਿ ਗਰਮ ਝਾਰੈ ॥ ਉਠੈ ਨਾਦ ਭਾਰੇ ਛੁਟੈ ਚਿੰਨਗਾਰੈ ॥੪੯॥ ਕਿਤੇ ਗੋਫਨੈ ਗੁਰਜ ਗੋਲਾ ਚਲਾਵੈ ॥ ਕਿਤੇ ਅਰਧ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਾਦਿ ਬਾਨਾ ਬਜਾਵੈ ॥ ਕਿਤੇ ਸੂਲ ਸੈਥੀ ਸੂਆ ਹਾਥ ਲੈ ਕੈ ॥ ਮੰਡੇ ਆਨਿ ਜੋਧਾ ਮਹਾ ਕੋਪ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਕੈ ॥੫੦॥ ਫਰੀ ਧੋਪ ਖਾਂਡੇ ਲਏ ਫਾਸ ਐਸੀ ॥ ਮਨੌ ਨਾਰਿ ਕੇ ਸਾਹੁ ਕੀ ਜੁਲਫ ਜੈਸੀ ॥ ਕਰੀ ਮਤ ਕੀ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਮਾਰਤ ਬਿਹਾਰੈ ॥ ਜਿਸੇ ਕੰਠਿ ਡਾਰੈ ਤਿਸੈ ਐਚ ਮਾਰੈ ॥੫੧॥ ਚੌਪਈ ॥ Chaupaee ਜਬ ਇਹ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਸਕਲ ਭਟ ਲਰੇ ॥ ਟੂਕ ਟੂਕ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਪਰੇ ॥ Fighting, and fighting hard, when they fell being cut in combats, ਤਬ ਬਿਕ੍ਰਮ ਹਸਿ ਬੈਨ ਉਚਾਰੋ ॥ ਕਾਮਸੈਨ ਸੁਨੁ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਹਮਾਰੋ ॥੫੨॥ Bikrim came forward said smilingly, ‘Kam Dev, now listen to me,(52) ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ Dohira ਦੈ ਬੇਸ੍ਵਾ ਇਹ ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਕੌ ਸੁਨੁ ਰੇ ਬਚਨ ਅਚੇਤ ॥ ‘Oh, fool, handover this prostitute to that Brahmin. ਬ੍ਰਿਥਾ ਜੁਝਾਰਤ ਕ੍ਯੋ ਕਟਕ ਏਕ ਨਟੀ ਕੇ ਹੇਤ ॥੫੩॥ ‘Why for the sake of a prostitute, get your army killed.’(53) ਚੌਪਈ ॥ Chaupaee ਕਾਮਸੈਨ ਤਿਹ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਕਰੀ ॥ ਪੁਨਿ ਬਿਕ੍ਰਮ ਹਸਿ ਯਹੈ ਉਚਰੀ ॥ Kam Sen did not heed and Bikrim said, ਹਮ ਤੁਮ ਲਰੈ ਕਪਟ ਤਜਿ ਦੋਈ ॥ ਕੈ ਜੀਤੇ ਕੈ ਹਾਰੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੫੪॥ ‘Whether one wins or losses, let us now fight.(54) ਅਪਨੀ ਅਪਨੇ ਹੀ ਸਿਰ ਲੀਜੈ ॥ ਔਰਨ ਕੇ ਸਿਰ ਬ੍ਰਿਥਾ ਨ ਦੀਜੈ ॥ ‘Let us finish our quarrel ourselves, why roll the heads of others. ‘For ਬੈਠਿ ਬਿਗਾਰਿ ਆਪੁ ਜੋ ਕਰਿਯੈ ॥ ਨਾਹਕ ਔਰ ਲੋਕ ਨਹਿ ਮਰਿਯੈ ॥੫੫॥ Our own sake, we should not make others to lose their lives.’(55) ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ Dohira ਕਾਮਸੈਨ ਇਹ ਬਚਨ ਸੁਨਿ ਅਧਿਕ ਉਠਿਯੋ ਰਿਸ ਖਾਇ ॥ Listening to this, Kam Sen flew into the rage, ਅਪਨੌ ਤੁਰੈ ਧਵਾਇ ਕੈ ਬਿਕ੍ਰਮ ਲਯੋ ਬੁਲਾਇ ॥੫੬॥ Sprinting his horse, he challenged Bikrim.(56) ਕਾਮਸੈਨ ਐਸੇ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਸੂਰ ਸਾਮੁਹੇ ਜਾਇ ॥ Kam Sen Addressed the Soldiers like this, ਝਾਗਿ ਸੈਹਥੀ ਬ੍ਰਿਣ ਕਰੈ ਤੌ ਤੂ ਬਿਕ੍ਰਮ ਸਰਾਇ ॥੫੭॥ ‘I will consider you as Raja Bikrim, if you can injure me with the sword.’(57) ਝਾਗਿ ਸੈਹਥੀ ਪੇਟ ਮਹਿ ਚਿਤ ਮਹਿ ਅਧਿਕ ਰਿਸਾਇ ॥ ਆਨਿ ਕਟਾਰੀ ਕੋ ਕਿਯੋ ਕਾਮਸੈਨ ਕੋ ਘਾਇ ॥੫੮॥ ਐਸੇ ਕੌ ਐਸੋ ਲਹਤ ਜਿਯਤ ਨ ਛਾਡਤ ਔਰ ॥ Tlien they struck each other with force, ਮਾਰਿ ਕਟਾਰੀ ਰਾਖਿਯੋ ਜਿਯਤ ਰਾਵ ਤਿਹ ਠੌਰ ॥੫੯॥ And, brandishing his sword he killed the Raja.(59) ਚੌਪਈ ॥ Chaupaee ਜੀਤਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਸਭ ਸੈਨ ਬੁਲਾਈ ॥ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਕੀ ਬਜੀ ਬਧਾਈ ॥ After the victory, he assembled his army and exchanged felicities. ਦੇਵਨ ਰੀਝਿ ਇਹੈ ਬਰੁ ਦਯੋ ॥ ਬ੍ਰਣੀ ਹੁਤੋ ਅਬ੍ਰਣ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਗਯੋ ॥੬੦॥ The gods showered their blessing and Bikrim’s injuries Were diminished.(60) ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ Dohira ਅਥਿਤ ਭੇਖ ਸਜਿ ਆਪੁ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਗਯੋ ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਕੇ ਕਾਮ ॥ Disguising himself as Brahmin priest, he went there, ਜਹ ਕਾਮਾ ਲੋਟਤ ਹੁਤੀ ਲੈ ਮਾਧਵ ਕੋ ਨਾਮ ॥੬੧॥ Where Kama was rolling in remembrance of Madhwan. ਚੌਪਈ ॥ Chaupaee ਜਾਤੈ ਇਹੈ ਬਚਨ ਤਿਨ ਕਹਿਯੋ ॥ ਮਾਧਵ ਖੇਤ ਹੇਤ ਤਵ ਰਹਿਯੋ ॥ Raja (Bikrim) told her that Madhwan had died in the war. ਸੁਨਤ ਬਚਨ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਮਰਿ ਗਈ ॥ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਲੈ ਇਹੈ ਖਬਰਿ ਦਿਜ ਦਈ ॥੬੨॥ Hearing the news she immediately breathed her last and then Raja went to give the news to Brahmin.(62) ਯਹ ਬਚ ਜਬ ਸ੍ਰੋਨਨ ਸੁਨਿ ਲੀਨੋ ॥ ਪਲਕ ਏਕ ਮਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਨਹਿ ਦੀਨੋ ॥ When he (Brahmin) heard this news through his own ears, he, instantly, expired. ਜਬ ਕੌਤਕ ਇਹ ਰਾਇ ਨਿਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥ ਜਰਨ ਮਰਨ ਕਾ ਨਿਗ੍ਰਹ ਧਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੬੩॥ When Raja witnessed this, he decided to immolate himself as well.(63) ਚਿਤਾ ਜਰਾਇ ਜਰਨ ਜਬ ਲਾਗ੍ਯੋ ॥ ਤਬ ਬੈਤਾਲ ਤਹਾ ਤੇ ਜਾਗ੍ਯੋ ॥ When the flaming pyre was ready, suddenly Betaal, (his court poet) appeared. ਸੰਚਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਤਿਹ ਦੁਹੂੰਨ ਜਿਯਾਯੋ ॥ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੇ ਚਿਤ ਕੋ ਤਾਪੁ ਮਿਟਾਯੋ ॥੬੪॥ He sprinkled the nectar over the bodies of both of them, made them alive again and eliminated Raja’s affliction.(64) ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ Dohira ਸਹਿ ਸੈਥੀ ਪਾਵਕ ਬਰਿਯੋ ਦੁਹੂੰਅਨ ਲਯੋ ਬਚਾਇ ॥ He bore the brunt of sword and had decided to burn himself, ਕਾਮਾ ਦਈ chatanga1 Posted May 8, 2019 Author Report Share Posted May 8, 2019 After listening to the katha of this charitar, i still can't see anything blatant underhand acts/deceit etc. The charitar seems to focus on the life of Madhavnal as he seems to run up against problems in one place or another. Maybe the initial fault was his as he was enticing the minds of the women with his flute playing which ended in his being expelled from the kingdom. One of the other things that stood out was the the thinking of the King Bikramjit. He wanted to retrieve Kaamkandla for Madhavnal. Even in the story he tells Raja KaamSen to give the "prostitute back to the Brahman." Raja Bikramjit rather than wage fullscale war involving thousands of soldiers says that "we should duel, just the two of us, and the winner takes all, rather than casuing the deaths of thousands of soldiers." This tells us that the Brahman must have been very highly regarded to the King where he would be prepared to risk the lives of thousands of his soldiers for the freedom of one woman. At the end, having been falsely told that Madhavnal is dead, Kaamkandla kills herself in grief. The relaying this news to the Madhavnal, he also kjlls himself in grief as well.
