Whirling Dervishes

Recommended Posts

A few week ago I saw this program on the tv, about twirling... and that's what sparked my interest...

it showed a sufi muslim teaching twirling... as in he was literally moving round and round on the spot.. one hand pointed in the air and the other towards the ground..

unfortunately i didnt catch the name of the program as i was just flicking through channels when i came across it, whilst eating my Sunday morning prontahs.

does anyone have any more information on this?

In Turkey today, Rumi is revered by many as the founder of the Mevlevi Order, which is associated with the colorful "whirling dervishes," the Sufis who twirl themselves into joyful merger with the Absolute. Indeed, Rumi himself helped make popular the once questionable practice of this mystic dance by twirling, first in the marketplace, and later, to the astonishment of many, at a funeral for a beloved friend. Iran, which has assumed the role of the preserver of Persian culture, has in recent years offered its respects to the poet through an abundant outpouring of new scholarly essays.

Whirling Dervish (wurl-ing dur-vish) n. 1. A mystical

dancer who stands between the material and cosmic

worlds. His dance is part of a sacred ceremony

in which the dervish rotates in a precise rhythm.

He represents the earth revolving on its axis while

orbiting the sun. The purpose of the ritual whirling

is for the dervish to empty himself of all distracting

thoughts, placing him in trance; released from

his body he conquers dizziness.
