ALCOHOL AT SIKH EVENT

I can shed some light on this. My uncle is part of the committee of this Gurdwara and I have spoken to him about this.

He said it is a kabbadi tournament, and they are organising the event. They do provide LANGAR but they do not cook any meat. He said there is a hot dog stand at the event and people do drink alcohol even though they try and stop it.

I told him they should enforce the ban through the police or if they can't control the event they shouldn't organise it.

My dad wouldn't let me discuss it any further with my uncle as he felt I was disrespecting my uncle.

I will try get more information for you.

GURDWARA EXPOSED!

“Guru Arjan Dev Ji Shaheedi†Sports & Cultural Tournament organised by:

Sri Guru Singh Sabha London East

For several years Sangat has been trying to stop this tournament where the following happens:

1) Excessive Alcohol & Drug Abuse

2) Rowdy and Violent Behaviour

3) Langar from Gurdwara is distributed alongside meat and alcohol

4) Misuse of Gurdwara Funds

Is this what Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji & Sikh Shaheeds lived and died for?

This Gurdwara committee are the Massands of today. They refuse to address the concerns of the Sangat. They are misusing the offerings from Sangat. They partake in the alcohol & drug abuse on the day of the tournament. They profit from the tournament.

This is the future of our community at stake. Do we want people who abuse their roles as community leaders?

This abuse of power has to stop and as Sadh Sangat this is your chance to make a difference in your local area. The committee is responsible to YOU all of the local Sadh Sangat. The tournament highlights the extent to which this committee is not capable of promoting Sikhism within the local area.

Things will not change unless we try to do something about it. If you have love for Guruji and call yourself a Sikh then it’s your problem.

Call the Gurdwara on;

020 8594 3940 / 020 8597 8822

Write to the committee;

100 North Street, Barking, Essex IG11 8DJ or

720-730 High Road, Seven Kings, Ilford, Essex IG3 8ST

Call Committee Members;

Lehmbar Lehal 020 8252 7244

Sardara Dhaliwal 020 8550 3303

Sansara Narwal 01708 753649

Gurdip Hundal 020 8924 9310

everyone should ring and tell the committee what they think.

some ideas:

explain to them that meat and alcohol are prohibited for all sikhs.

ask them would they let someone under the influence of alcohol enter their Gurdwara?? if they wouldn't then how can they provide langar for people who are drunk.

why does the Gurdwara need to be involved in organising this event?

how much sangat money is ploughed into the event?

who's money is used for langar?

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!!

“Guru Arjan Dev Ji Shaheedi†Cultural & Sports Tournament.

Currently this tournament has been advertised as “Guru Arjan Dev Ji Shaheedi†in the Punjabi Press.

Flyers distributed by the Organisers locally have the tournament’s name as “Shaheediâ€.

Yesterday the committee of Sri Guru Singh Sabha London East met with the Local Sangat regarding “Guru Arjan Dev Ji Shaheedi†Cultural & Sports Tournament. The committee promised to adhere to the following points:

1) The name of the tournament will be changed for next year & following years, this includes removing the term Shaheedi.

2) There will be a complete alcohol ban this year within the grounds. Police will enforce this and drunkenness will not be tolerated. This will be mirrored & improved on in following years.

3) No serving of meat this year and in future years.

The committee has promised the above in the presence of the Local Sangat. The proof will be on the day.

The phone calls really helped put pressure on the Gurdwara committee. Thanks to everyone that took time out to call up the individual committee members. The Gurdwara committee received calls from outside countries such US, Canada, Singapore and India.

Thanks to all the sangat who signed the petition, this also added to the pressure on the committee.

At the end of the day we may have not completely received the desired outcome, but the fact that they have implemented some changes after 25 years shows the collective power the Sangat have over the committee.

Keep up the pressure!!!! E-mail sikhalerts@yahoo.co.uk with any issues surrounding beadbi in Guru Ghars or visit www.gurugranthsahibji.com.
