Like if Im reading a teeka or Gurbilas, Panth Parkash etc I will touch it to to my forehead out of respect. For other books like Sikh/Panjabi history I don't. It may also be something about knowledge as well. If you are learning from the book, is that book a "guru" a teacher for you? If it is then bowing or some kind of respect is necessary.
