  1. Just because she plucked her eye brows does not mean she cannot have good sound argument- vahiguru exist in everyone operating mysteriously through everyone its exactly this type of cheap shots from hard liners, people are being put off from sikhi all together. I stand by with her.
  2. You do some have weight in your argument. However its just not proportionate with women with period for for following reasons- 1. This implies women does not take bath but in fact they do during period or off period 2. Due to women innovative products dealing with period, hygienic impurity issues with women during period is been reduced to almost none. So this circumstantial maryada does not apply in this day and age thanks to technology evolution. 3. The problem is many sikhs have failed to realized - realities realities (in this case small maryada of preventing women doing seva of maharaj during their period) is subjected to change as its circumstantial based on individual jevan basis and more importantly subjected to underpinning of absolute reality of maharaj - inner soul intention-sharda and prem- feeling so both for and against argument towards this small maryada rule cannot be used as precedence either way.
  3. I guess counter argument against that would be - this comparison does not make sense as its being implied - women who got their periods every month are un-naturally/out of ordinary sick as its being compared to male who have urinated/cold/flu problems. However, thats simply not true- women periods is quite natural there is nothing out of ordinary about it. I really doubt guru nanak dev ji or sri guru gobind singh ji would have refused woman who has sharda and prem to have their darshan/seva just because of their period, Here we are talking about normal mind being automatically drawn to super cosmic pure light mind of our Guru's (neddle being drawn to mass divine magnet) not talking about normal royal visit. I am with sangat on this one, i think sant hari singh ji with all due respect is little out of depth on this one. I cannot believe gyani of highest calibre of gurmat gyan wrapping their head around small questionable sakhi using that as precedence over gurbani and cannot think pass beyond body/nitty gritty hygienic issues of male and female. He should have explained things in stages/context because most relative realities/truth are underpinned by absolute reality/truth (god in all, all in god-everything gods expression). Once we loose absolute truth/reality underpinning then there is quite high tendency of getting fixated on these nitty gritty relatives realities and make that our reality. It's really a time now to raise collective consciousness of our community, its way too behind or tribal in comparison to gurbani gurmat wisdom.

  5. Why dictate DDT maryada on mainstream panthic gurdwara? Do you see AKJ, nihang or nirmale superimposing their maryada on regular gurdwaras? I am big fan of taksali aka nirmala literature which relates to individual spirituality but when it comes to women equality they are totally out of depth and are deemed sexist.
  6. Its so unfortunate how simple message of sikhi -naam japo - meditation , kirat karo -honest living and vand shako and seva is been reduced to such first level shariat dogmatic notions and in fighting over it. Sant hari Singh should keep the message simple no point taking sangat into bhamal bhosa fighting over it.
  7. Looks like Sant HarI Singh Ji Randhawale getting grilled, he kept calm. Here is in short what happened. Sant ji was doing katha at dukh nivaran sahib in BC where sangat who had questions came to him abruptly interupted live divan on stage for questions then he advised sangat he will answer questions in seperate room environment. Main question was - why women is considered dirty and cannot go to sri guru granth sahib ji while in period? and he responded its not the question of women being period even if men had washrom issues where he has to keep going on and on to the bathroom that is considered unhygienic due to respect of sri guru granth sahib. Here have a listen, i will post my thoughts afterwards. Please discuss. One thing i have noticed in the debates, our people are quite tribal and junglee when it comes to have discussion..in the videos you will see people yelling and screaming..seriously are we that seriously that pathetic we cannot even discuss things without yelling and screaming? Sant ji kept it quiet and calm as you would expect from gyani who has leant 30-40 years learning gurmat vidya and how to interact with debates. At the end i beleive cops as usual were called in. Unbeleivable sad state of affairs. Thats why internet forums are so important for our community to prepare our people to interact in debates or discussion, because amount of deep layers of stuff we talk about online if it was real life shit will fly in the air. https://www.facebook.com/jagroop.singh.904/videos/902551259786485/ In this video, she said her freind was threatned by sant hari singh chela..if thats a case unbelievable. he should be charged uttering threats to women. 8. I do have a feeling, this was more of retaliation from similar incident yesterday when their cop got stabbed (which should not have happened ). We need to step back and stragetize on these things and ask ourselves what vantage point we really have from armed right wing Hindu fanatics? I have a good feeling these raw agents will once again will play with sikh emotions at jammu and push them over on the brink to kashmir will open up gates weapon supply from ISI and islamic militants then viola they have create another militant organization which they will use as their chess piece, in media. Thats what they do, they push people in the corner then they themselves supply them weapons then create a choas on both sides. It's a delicate suitation there.

(Andrea Bruce Woodall/The Washington Post)Sara Lazar, a neuroscientist at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, was one of the first scientists to take the anecdotal claims about the benefits of meditation and mindfulness and test them in brain scans. What she found surprised her — that meditating can literally change your brain. She explains: Q: Why did you start looking at meditation and mindfulness and the brain? Lazar: A friend and I were training for the Boston marathon. I had some running injuries, so I saw a physical therapist who told me to stop running and just stretch. So I started practicing yoga as a form of physical therapy. I started realizing that it was very powerful, that it had some real benefits, so I just got interested in how it worked. The yoga teacher made all sorts of claims, that yoga would increase your compassion and open your heart. And I’d think, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah, I’m here to stretch.’ But I started noticing that I was calmer. I was better able to handle more difficult situations. I was more compassionate and open hearted, and able to see things from others’ points of view. I thought, maybe it was just the placebo response. But then I did a literature search of the science, and saw evidence that meditation had been associated with decreased stress, decreased depression, anxiety, pain and insomnia, and an increased quality of life. At that point, I was doing my PhD in molecular biology. So I just switched and started doing this research as a post-doc. Q: How did you do the research? Lazar: The first study looked at long term meditators vs a control group. We found long-term meditators have an increased amount of gray matter in the insula and sensory regions, the auditory and sensory cortex. Which makes sense. When you’re mindful, you’re paying attention to your breathing, to sounds, to the present moment experience, and shutting cognition down. It stands to reason your senses would be enhanced. We also found they had more gray matter in the frontal cortex, which is associated with working memory and executive decision making. [Related: You’re missing out on your experiences: A meditation expert explains how to live in the moment] It’s well-documented that our cortex shrinks as we get older – it’s harder to figure things out and remember things. But in this one region of the prefrontal cortex, 50-year-old meditators had the same amount of gray matter as 25-year-olds. So the first question was, well, maybe the people with more gray matter in the study had more gray matter before they started meditating. So we did asecond study. We took people who’d never meditated before, and put one group through an eight-week mindfulness- based stress reduction program. Sara Lazar on how meditation affects the brain(3:35)In this excerpt from the documentary "The Connection," which tells the stories of people adding mind-body medicine to their healing practices, Harvard neuroscientist Sara Lazar talks about the connection between the mind and body during meditation. (The Connection)Q: What did you find? Lazar: We found differences in brain volume after eight weeks in five different regions in the brains of the two groups. In the group that learned meditation, we found thickening in four regions: 1. The primary difference, we found in the posterior cingulate, which is involved in mind wandering, and self relevance. 2. The left hippocampus, which assists in learning, cognition, memory and emotional regulation. 3. The temporo parietal junction, or TPJ, which is associated with perspective taking, empathy and compassion. 4. An area of the brain stem called the Pons, where a lot of regulatory neurotransmitters are produced. The amygdala, the fight or flight part of the brain which is important for anxiety, fear and stress in general. That area got smaller in the group that went through the mindfulness-based stress reduction program. The change in the amygdala was also correlated to a reduction in stress levels. [Related: Science shows that stress has an upside. Here’s how to make it work for you] Q: So how long does someone have to meditate before they begin to see changes in their brain? Lazar: Our data shows changes in the brain after just eight weeks. In a mindfulness-based stress reduction program, our subjects took a weekly class. They were given a recording and told to practice 40 minutes a day at home. And that’s it. Q: So, 40 minutes a day? Lazar: Well, it was highly variable in the study. Some people practiced 40 minutes pretty much every day. Some people practiced less. Some only a couple times a week. In my study, the average was 27 minutes a day. Or about a half hour a day. There isn’t good data yet about how much someone needs to practice in order to benefit. Meditation teachers will tell you, though there’s absolutely no scientific basis to this, but anecdotal comments from students suggest that 10 minutes a day could have some subjective benefit. We need to test it out. We’re just starting a study that will hopefully allow us to assess what the functional significance of these changes are. Studies by other scientists have shown that meditation can help enhance attention and emotion regulation skills. But most were not neuroimaging studies. So now we’re hoping to bring that behavioral and neuroimaging science together. Q: Given what we know from the science, what would you encourage readers to do? Lazar: Mindfulness is just like exercise. It’s a form of mental exercise, really. And just as exercise increases health, helps us handle stress better and promotes longevity, meditation purports to confer some of those same benefits. But, just like exercise, it can’t cure everything. So the idea is, it’s useful as an adjunct therapy. It’s not a standalone. It’s been tried with many, many other disorders, and the results vary tremendously – it impacts some symptoms, but not all. The results are sometimes modest. And it doesn’t work for everybody. It’s still early days for trying to figure out what it can or can’t do. Q: So, knowing the limitations, what would you suggest? Lazar: It does seem to be beneficial for most people. The most important thing, if you’re going to try it, is to find a good teacher. Because it’s simple, but it’s also complex. You have to understand what’s going on in your mind. A good teacher is priceless Q: Do you meditate? And do you have a teacher? Lazar: Yes and yes. Q: What difference has it made in your life? Lazar: I’ve been doing this for 20 years now, so it’s had a very profound influence on my life. It’s very grounding. It’s reduced stress. It helps me think more clearly. It’s great for interpersonal interactions. I have more empathy and compassion for people. Q: What’s your own practice? Lazar: Highly variable. Some days 40 minutes. Some days five minutes. Some days, not at all. It’s a lot like exercise. Exercising three times a week is great. But if all you can do is just a little bit every day, that’s a good thing, too. I’m sure if I practiced more, I’d benefit more. I have no idea if I’m getting brain changes or not. It’s just that this is what works for me right now. 14. Great news indeed. Naamdharis can learn lot of things from wider khalsa panth such as political activism, martial tradition, wider gurmat vidya and khalsa panth can learn great gurmat raag vidya tradition within naamdharis and also utilize naamdhari influence in higher positions in gov't sector when it comes to job, medical field etc.
  15. I agree with gyani kulwant singh ji understanding on this subject on one hand but this issue needs to be look at in its totality with perspective of parchar. If we keep coining in mainstream that people born in sikh families who are money, rhoday, kababi, anchari are patits or non sikhs then we likely will fail to bridge them we may even inadvertently demonize them so best thing to do is avoid all these labelling, do parchand gyan parchar of gurbani as many sants have done without labelling which has automatically quite naturally, spontaneously bought many non sikhs into sikhi fold so no really need for labelling. But if one really wants to do this type of labelling not in a contextual sense(question and answer) as gyani ji has done but one use it arrogantly self righteously demonize them than same argument can be made against whole label definition of khalsa as sarbloh granth defines khalsa as - atamgyani (self realized enlightened soul) so amritdhari who is not self realized yet does not have any right to use term khalsa with themselves. So its not quite black and white.

  17. Satguru meaning is perceived at different based on aspirant spiritual development stage- its -sargun satguru- sri guru granth sahib ji- physical saroop, -subtle form of Satguru- shabad guru in its resonance(dhun). -gyan agam saroop of Satguru all prevading satguru exist in everyone (all in one, one in all)- Sat(eternal true) Guru (chaitanta- consciousness/awareness)
  18. I think its human conditioning -egoic self righteouness plus -religious beliefs mixed with socio-political slant are perfect recipe of problems especially if not guided. It's complicated topic. One can argue we have miri-piri concept as well. But my understanding of miri piri is more from spiritual angle. Here are my thoughts on it based on my understanding, off course more idealistic than realistic in sikh diaspora
  19. Sikhs should have primary satoguni diet (raw food-fruit/vegetables/milk/almond/oats) with small portion of rajogun(enrich food) and tamogun(those who eat meat eg- nihang).
  20. http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-32929855 The darker side of BuddhismBy Charles HavilandBBC News, Colombo30 May 2015 From the sectionMagazinePhoto: AFPIn today's MagazineImage gallery Pilgrimage to the mountainsA symbol of holding outWho killed Alberto Nisman? How did my dad's Uber account get hacked? The principle of non-violence is central to Buddhist teachings, but in Sri Lanka some Buddhist monks are being accused of stirring up hostility towards other faiths and ethnic minorities. Their hard line is causing increasing concern. The small temple in the suburbs of Colombo is quiet. An image of the Buddha is surrounded with purple and white lotus flowers. Smaller Buddhas line the walls. But upstairs, a burly monk in a bright orange robe holds forth - for this is one of the main offices of a hard-line Buddhist organisation, the Bodu Bala Sena or Buddhist Power Force (BBS). The peaceful precepts for which Buddhism is widely known barely figure in his words. Instead, the monk, Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero, talks of his Buddhism in terms of race. Most Buddhists here are ethnically Sinhalese, and Sinhalese make up three-quarters of the island's population. "This country belongs to the Sinhalese, and it is the Sinhalese who built up its civilisation, culture and settlements. The white people created all the problems," says Gnanasara Thero angrily. He says the country was destroyed by the British colonialists, and its current problems are also the work of what he calls "outsiders". By that he means Tamils and Muslims. In fact, while a minority of the Tamils did indeed come from India as tea plantation workers, most of them, and most of the Muslims, are as Sri Lankan as the Sinhalese, with centuries-old roots here. "We are trying to... go back to the country of the Sinhalese," says Gnanasara Thero. "Until we correct this, we are going to fight." Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero. Photo: AFPThis firebrand strain of Buddhism is not new to Sri Lanka. A key Buddhist revivalist figure of the early 20th Century, Anagarika Dharmapala, was less than complimentary about non-Sinhalese people. He held that the "Aryan Sinhalese" had made the island into Paradise which was then destroyed by Christianity and polytheism. He targeted Muslims saying they had "by Shylockian methods" thrived at the expense of the "sons of the soil". And later, in 1959 Prime Minister SWRD Bandaranaike was assassinated by a Buddhist monk - the circumstances were murky but one contentious issue was the government's failure to do enough to ensure the rights of the Sinhala people. Find out moreThe Dark Side of Buddhismis on BBC Radio 4 on Sunday 31 May at 13:30 BST. Listen later on iPlayer Radio The long war against the Tamil Tigers - a violent rebel group purporting to speak for the Tamil minority - brought the hard-line Buddhists into their own once more. Portraying the war as a mission to protect the Sinhalese and Buddhism, in 2004 nine monks were elected to parliament on a nationalist platform. And it was from the monks' main party that Gnanasara Thero later broke away, in time forming the BBS. It is now the most prominent of several organisations sharing a similar ideology. Since 2012, the BBS has embraced direct action, following the example of other like-minded groups. It raided Muslim-owned slaughter-houses claiming, incorrectly, that they were breaking the law. Members demonstrated outside a law college alleging, again incorrectly, that exam results were being distorted in favour of Muslims. Now that a Tamil adversary has been defeated, Muslims seem to be these nationalists' main target, along with evangelical Christians whom they accuse of deceitfully and cunningly converting people away from Buddhism. But can the BBS be called violent? "Whenever there is something wrong done by a Buddhist monk everything [is blamed on] us because of our popularity," says BBS spokesman Dilantha Withanage. "BBS is not a terror organisation, BBS is not promoting violence against anyone... but we are against certain things." He cites threats by Islamic State to declare the whole of Asia a Muslim realm. Time and again he and his colleague bracket the word "Muslim" together with the word "extremist". "BBS is not promoting violence against anyone" - Dilantha WithanageThey are not the only Sinhalese who express discomfort at a visible rise in Muslim social conservatism in Sri Lanka. More women are covering up than before and in parts of the country Saudi-influenced Wahabi Muslims are jostling with more liberal ones. Yet there is no evidence of violent extremism among Sri Lankan Muslims. Rather, they have been at the receiving end of attacks from other parts of society. In the small town of Aluthgama last June, three people died in clashes that started when the BBS and other Buddhist monks led an anti-Muslim rally in a Muslim area. At the time, I met Muslim families whose homes and shops had been burnt and utterly destroyed, and who were cowering in schools as temporary refugees. Moderate Buddhists have also been targeted by hard-line ones. Last year Rev Wathareka Vijitha Thero was abducted, rendered unconscious, tied up and forcibly circumcised - he says this was meant as a gesture of ridicule because he had worked for closer cooperation between Buddhists and Muslims. He believes Buddhist monks - he doesn't know who or whether they were aligned with any particular group - were responsible. In a separate case, a few weeks earlier, Vijitha Thero had held a news conference to highlight the grievances of the Muslim community - the gathering was broken up by the BBS. Gnanasara had hurled insults and threatened him: "If you are involved in this type of stupid treachery again, you will be taken and put in the Mahaweli River," he said. The reference to the Mahaweli is significant - there was a left wing insurrection against the Sri Lankan government in 1989 - it's estimated 60,000 people disappeared and many dead bodies were dumped in the river. Another country where fierce Buddhism has recently made headlines is Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. A Buddhist faction there, the 969 movement, is known for strident anti-Muslim campaigns that have triggered widespread violence. Shin Wirathu (centre) arrives with Gnanasara Thero (left) for the Buddhist Power Force convention in Colombo in 2014. Photo: AFPIts leader, Shin Wirathu, was recently invited to Sri Lanka by the BBS. Both organisations say that even if Buddhism predominates in their own countries, overall it is under threat. "We want to protect it, therefore we signed a memorandum of understanding on forming alliances in the Asian region," says Withanage. In January, Sri Lanka unexpectedly elected a new president, Maithripala Sirisena. He told me that "everybody knows" who gave rise to the BBS - implying that it was the administration of his predecessor, Mahinda Rajapaksa. The previous government was, at least, strongly supportive of the organisation. And the group thrived because the rule of law had broken down, according to the new minister for Buddhist affairs, Karu Jayasuriya. He has told me that the BBS will be reined in. On Tuesday, Gnanasara Thero was arrested for taking part in an unauthorised demonstration but later freed on bail. Thus far, the new government - which, like the old one, includes a strongly Buddhist nationalist party - seems timid about taking on the men in orange. More from the MagazineOf all the moral precepts instilled in Buddhist monks the promise not to kill comes first, and the principle of non-violence is arguably more central to Buddhism than any other major religion. So why have monks been using hate speech against Muslims and joining mobs that have left dozens dead? Why are Buddhist monks attacking Muslims in Myanmar? Would this help in this discussion? .Gurfateh !The 'rehatnama' you are looking for is the 'Vajib Ul Arz' - or 'reasonable request' - This document is found in Bhai Mani Singh's 'Bhagat ratna wali'and is in the form of ten questions - said to have been asked of Guru Gobind Singh by Sehaj dhari Sikhs - and Guru Sahib's response. It is quite controversial - the version I am posting - an entry from Kahn Singh Nabha's Mahan Kosh - is prefaced by Kahn Singh saying that this cannot be the writing of Bhai Mani Singh and Guru Sahib would never have made such 'Hukums'.The main controversial points are to do with the keeping of kesh (the document allows the trimming of kesh to an 'acceptable' length) and various ceremonies requiring the presence of a 'Brahmin' It must be remembered that 'Mahan Kosh' was written at the height of the Singh Sabha Movement and it could be argued Kahn Singh was its chief apologist.Like always it's for you to make your own decision.hope this helps in someway !Ranjit Singh 'Freed'Here is the entry (in my copy of Mahan Kosh - 2000 edition, its on page 901) this version is from srigranth.orgMahan Kosh EncyclopediaEntry - ਵਾਜਿਬੁਲ ਅਰਜਅ਼. __ ਵਾਜਿਬੁਲ- ਅ਼ਰਜ. ਯੋਗ੍ਯ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ. ਵਿਨਯਪਤ੍ਰ। ੨. 23. It's very sad, my wife grew up in northern bc where there were lot of natives. She saw first hand systematic institutionalized racism against natives. Even right now, whilst they have lot of treaties with gov't, living up in north where lot of natives live- is very expensive for natives to properly afford. They literally are given to two options- either integrate with urban anglo saxon canadian society where they can take advantage of subsidized housing/jobs or live in north and preserve their traditions in north and suffer more as everything is more expensive (pack of fresh water bottles 12 - $24 CAD) and their many native chiefs are just like our corrupt badals- they don't help their own people, they eat all the money as well.
