  1. Panthic Weekly Vancouver, Canada (KP) - The current tour of Ranjit Singh ‘Dhadrianwale’ on Canadian soil as part of his international trip has thus far been a complete flop. First visiting the Toronto area, the ‘sant’ was only allowed to do kirtan in one of the many large Gurdware in the area. In the Vancouver area, the ‘sadh’ has faced even more oppostion. Upon discovering his plans to visit Canada, entities such as 'Sanjh Savera' and Ontario Sikh and Gurdwara Council launched a public boycott of the ‘sant’ because of his violation of Gurmat principals such as allowing followers to touch his feet, singing ‘katchi bani’, and allegedly wearing a ‘kalgi’. He is also criticized for adorning himself in Bollywood type costumes and dastars. As many as 50 activits held a meeting in Toronto to decide how to best question and handle the arrival of ‘Dhadrianwala’, and whether he should be questioned in sangat or in a more private setting. As word spread of Ranjit Singh’s misdeeds, other groups along with the regular sangat began to join the cry for a boycott as well. One such organization that asked for a boycott was the Ontario Sikh and Gurdwara Council (OSGC) which helps run 18 Gurdwara Sahibs in the Toronto area. The OSGC decided that the ‘sant’ would not be allowed to hold a program in any of their Gurdwaras. This decision however came a bit late as Ranjit Singh ‘Dhadrian’ had already held a small unannounced darbar at Kitchener Gurdwara which is managed by the OSGC. The ‘sant’ also held a small darbar at a Ramgarhia Sikh Association Gurdwara in Stoney Creek. Aside from holding a program that took place at Malton Gurdwara Sahib, the other two Gurdwaras in which Ranjit Singh performed at are outside of Toronto and have very little sangat. Following his Toronto visit the ‘sant’ also traveled to Alberta and Calgary where he faced oppostion. Travelling westward, ‘Dhadrianwala’ arrived in Surrey, BC. The ‘sant’ performed at a darbar at the Nanaksar Gurdwara of “sadh balandpuri†on Thursday evening. As the majority of the sangat became aware of his arrival and that permission had been given to him to hold a similar diwan in Khalsa School (Surrey), active sangat members cried out forcing the cancellation of his Khalsa School itinerary. Hundereds of protestors outside Baba's divan in Vancouver (Photo : ChardiKala News Group) As it was later learned the ‘sadh’ was planning to return to the Nanaksar dera at 5pm due to the Khalsa School program being cancelled. Taking note of his expected arrival, some 300-400 members of the Surrey sangat unanimously and, without prior planning, took to the streets, standing on the corner of 168th street and 88th avenue in protest of the ‘baba’ and his misdeeds. Garland of old shoes welcomes Baba ‘Amritdhaaris’ and ‘Sehajdhaari’ alike stood shoulder to shoulder protesting for 5 hours shouting ‘jaikaareh’ and slogans such as “Dhadrianwala murdabad,†“Guru maniyo Granth,†and “Raj Karega Khalsa.†Protestors also held up photos of the ‘sadh’ which were surrounded by homemade garlands of shoes. Vehicles which passed by the protesters honked their horns in their support and of their cries for answers to the ‘sadh’s’ shady actions. Ranjit Singh himself arrived at the dera at 8:30pm along with police escorts the latter informing the sangat that they could protest so long as it was done in a peaceful manner. The sangat obliged to the request and consequently did not enter the darbar which ‘Dhadrianwala’ held out of respect for Guru Ji and to avoid any instances of beadbi. Media persons from stations such as channel M, and other popular Punjabi radio stations covered the ongoing events. Meanwhile inside the dera, ‘Dhadrianwala’ addressed a small gathering of only about 100 people as opposed to the 300-400 persons protesting outdoors against him. It is alleged that ‘Dhadrianwala’ made an attempt to “clear his name†whilst in the home of the family who he stayed with as a guest in Surrey, BC. Having been publicly rejected by the majority, Ranjit Singh cancelled programs which he had scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. It is also believed that the ‘sant’ is expected to return to the Toronto area sometime around October 9th next week. In the wake of the recent happenings against various self-styled ‘saints,’ one thing is certain; that is the sangat has become irksome to the selfish intent and malicious affects that such individuals are having on the Sikh Panth. Recently Mann Pehova who is accused of sexual improprieties with his female followers was given similar treatment during his recent visit to California. Worried from further opposition, the Baba also cancelled his entire August trip to the UK. For their private gain, such self-styled santdoms and gurudoms are amassing unimaginable wealth using the Sangat’s money. It is a sign of good fortune that individuals and community leaders are taking note of the disease of santdom, and that many are taking action, demanding answers, and holding guilty parties accountable for their conduct.
  2. In my honest opinion, (not that I am a scholar, gyani etc.....as there are many on here that are wise beyond me) but One should never give up naam simran, gurbani paath and kirtan as one cen never reach akaal......One may think that they have reached a level of spiritual bliss but Waheguru's limit cannot be found. In chandi di vaar, Dhan Dhan Satguru Gobind Singh Ji mentions, "baday baday mun devtay kaiee jug tinni tan thaiyaa, kiini tera ant na paiyaa" loosley translated meaning that even the highest of gods tried finding his limit yet they couldn't find his end as he is limitless. Don't think of doing simran as the ends to a mean but a tool on the spiritual journey to akaal. The more simran we do, it is still less. Just keep doing naam simran, gurbani paath and kirtan and guru ji will be benvolent to you.........

  14. http://sarangi.info/archives/108Interview with Ustad Bismillah Khan Bismillah Khan’s Interview Ustad Bismillah Khan, the greatest living exponent of an evocative instrument, the shehnai, received the Bharat Ratna in 2001. The 91-year-old maestro talks to The Indian Express Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta on NDTV 24×7’s Walk the Talk programme about his riyaaz, the oneness of divinity, his unflagging love for music, and above all, his faith in humanity • Ustaad Bismillah Khan, I am very grateful to you for agreeing to speak to us on our programme. Let me tell you I have very little to say, if it’s to talk nonsense. I don’t know anything but music; if you ask about that, I can say many things. • You must practice for hours on end. Oh endlessly. These temples of ours in Benaras—Balaji and Mangala Gauri—Balaji is a little lower, you have to go down the stairs, but Mangala Gauri is at a height. I don’t visit them nowadays; but the stones are the same, aren’t they? You bring gangajal, you go inside to offer it—but the stones outside are just the same. All you need to do is put your hand to them. • And where you place your hand, music and the heart become one. Yes, yes—just put your hand there and what joy you’ll feel. You can’t see it though, I’m afraid, it’s not something to be seen. • You have such power. If you sing just a few phrases from the Raag Malhar it begins to rain. My forefathers used to perform at the Balaji temple. Do you know what they were paid? Rs 35 or 40 for a whole month. When my grandmother performed, do you know what the deal was fixed for? 14 annas. • Khan saheb, you have never differentiated between religions, you believe all are one. They are one, absolutely one. It’s impossible for there to be division. This voice you hear, it’s that that we call sur. • I heard you once had an argument with a maulana from Iraq. He said music was blasphemy, and you made him understand that music is also a means to God. Yes, I set him right. • Tell us how you did it. It was nothing. He said music is evil, a trap of the devil, and you mustn’t fall into it. I said to him: Maulana, all I ask is that you be fair. Then I started singing, and when I finished I asked if this was blasphemy. • You reached out to Allah through music. What did the maulana say then? He was speechless, he had nothing left to say. I told him not to fall into these errors. I asked him if taking Allah’s name in the raag was wrong—that was all I was saying, though it was in Raag Bhairav. • So there is no difference between Hindu and Muslim in music—all music goes to one end? Yes—that same Bhairav I sang—any number of Hindus would agree that it was Raag Bhairav. • Khan saheb, among your contemporaries, you’re in a league of your own. When you got the Bharat Ratna, no one was in disagreement, everyone said it was long overdue. Look, this is the tool I use (holds up shehnai)—it is very dear to me. • You keep it with you always—you sleep with it near you. Yes I do. This is such a thing that when I lift it, I start thinking from my heart. As I said, the stones are the same, both inside and out. People sprinkle gangajal inside, but they never make an offering outside. I put my hand on the stones outside. • I heard that Lata Mangeshkar called to congratulate you when you received the Bharat Ratna. What did she say to you? Lata was overjoyed. She called me and said: Khan saheb, you’ve got the Bharat Ratna. By that time, other people had also told me, so I said: Yes, it’s come to me too. • Both of you had received it. Yes, I congratulated her. Lata is very melodious, it must be said. • Do you like listening to her? Immensely. She has a magic in her voice that very few have. There was also Begum Akhtar… • Yes, she used to sing ghazals and thumris. She sang Deewana Bana De—it was a couplet. Many people have sung it, but when she sang, I would make it a point to go to the studio to hear her. And how she sang. I was asleep once—it must have been an hour or so after midnight. Somewhere, someone was playing one of the Begum’s records. • Which one? The same one—Deewana Bana De. There was a strong breeze—I awoke and sat up to hear her sing. I was enjoying myself so much, I woke my wife up—she was very annoyed and she said, What’s all this in the middle of the night? I told her to get lost. • You said that to her? Yes, I did. Well, she was my wife after all. The next day, I got to know that what I’d heard at two o’clock in the morning wasn’t a record, but was Begum Akhtar herself. • And which of Lata’s songs do you like? Not anything in particular, but it’s her voice. As I said, not everyone has what she has. From the first time I heard her, I wanted to see whether or not she would keep her voice. But it’s still there, intact till today. Other people lose their voice, not Lata. Whenever she sings, it is always a pleasure. • There was also that song you composed for Gunj Uthi Shehnai. That, yes—Dil ka khilona— I composed it. What people have to say about it doesn’t concern me, so long as they liked the melody. You can say anything you choose—if you want to call me names, I’m ready to take them, but only, please, be in tune. I composed and played that song for the world, and the world enjoyed it. But this sort of thing isn’t to my liking. • Is that why you didn’t do any other work for film? There’s no way I would. • Khan Saheb, your contemporaries—Pandit Ravi Shankar, Bhimsen Joshi, Balamurali Krishna from the South—what do you think of these musicians? They are all very good—there’s no doubt of that. Bhimsen Joshi and I were great friends. • They’re all your friends. Khan Saheb, all your contemporaries have made so much money—they’ve built huge homes, they have several cars, they live abroad. And here you are: still in your old neighbourhood, living so simply at your old home. Have you ever had regrets? No, none. Here’s what I say—if anyone wants to meet me, they will have to come here. I will not go anywhere, whether it’s for a raja, a maharaja or anyone else. If I’m not in the mood, I won’t go anywhere for any amount of money. Look, this is my means (touches shehnai to forehead). By the grace of God, when this is in my hands, all the wealth of the world could be brought to me, and I’d say: Get about your business, take it away. So long as this one thing is with me, what need do I have for anything else? • No one should be grasping, agreed. But don’t you think it would have been better, with your large family, if you had organised your records and performances, built a house, accumulated some wealth? Yes, I have a family—but it isn’t in my nature, all this nonsense. Is there no joy in music—is it all to be this foolishness? There is beauty in my voice—I could sing, and after a while there would be tears in your eyes. • Everyone who hears you has tears in their eyes, and while they cry, they laugh as well. Yes, but that doesn’t happen for money. • So, you are not bothered with money. No, not at all. • But you would say that other musicians have been greedy, that this isn’t right? Yes, there shouldn’t be that. You don’t know this—I had gone to Pakistan once, and I didn’t feel at all at home there. There was this fence—look at one side and it’s Pakistan, look at the other and it’s Hindustan. I said to hell with it. I would say namaskaar to the Pakistanis and salaam alaikum to the Indians. I was there for about an hour—I couldn’t take the place, but I had a good laugh. • You didn’t like it there? No, not in the least. I just crossed the fence to say: I have been to Pakistan. • But when Partition happened, didn’t you and your family ever think of moving to Pakistan? God forbid. Me, leave Benaras? Never. • When India became independent, you performed at the Red Fort. Could you tell us about that? How can I tell you about it? I can’t express those feelings. I performed at the Red Fort—I went inside, there was a stage set up and it was a thrilling experience. But what exactly happened, who was there, I can’t recall. • You have seen so much of the world. You were born in 1914, when the First World War was on; you’ve also seen the Second World War, India’s Independence—the whole world has changed. But at this time, what’s happening in the world, violence, terrorism—what do you feel about it all? Nothing. Tell me, how many people are there in Hindustan? • More than a hundred crores. Everyone has a mind, right? Everyone thinks differently. Each one of them can’t be good, there will have to be some who will do bad. • But, Khan saheb, the world has started talking about ‘Islamic terrorism’, as though terror were intrinsic to Islam. Do you feel bad about that? No, it’s not like that. Didn’t I just tell you, there’s only God. I can sing to Allah in Raag Bhairav. • And you say that if you sing, it will start to rain. Yes, it does. • Well, it’s started to rain now. It’s not like that. But a raag is a raag, you can’t change a raag. • What would you like to tell the world, and specially Muslims, about handling this problem? I do not want to say anything to Muslims. (claps) These claps are the rhythm, the flow. • You mean, when you are with the flow, you think of good things, bad thoughts will vanish of their own? How many people will you reform? How many thousands of people there are. • Yes, there’ll always be a few bad guys left. That will always happen. All the maulavis say one shouldn’t drink liquor, but people still do, don’t they? If others do wrong, let them. One should be firm about not doing so oneself. • Khan saheb, tell me—you’re 91 years old. You’re playing still, and there’s a glow in your face. How have you kept your health all these years—your health and your spirit? To look at you would lift a sad man’s heart. I’ll tell you, it’s not like that. When my wife passed away, I was very disturbed for a year. Everyone wanted me to remarry, but I listened to my heart. I have children, girls—what would become of them? I decided I wouldn’t marry. This is my companion. (picks up shehnai) • When your begum left, this was by your side? Yes, this is all I have. • So, who are you teaching now; who will take care of the shehnai after you? My sons will be there. • When you listen to today’s film music—do you ever listen to A.R. Rehman? No. I am not in that line. I went into films once or twice. They wanted me to do things their way. I said: Am I here to learn from you? I just packed up and quit. They think they have so much money—they’ll throw a bit here and there, and I will be ready to do whatever they want. They could be playing all their lives, but they will never learn anything. I couldn’t stand it. They thought they would dictate terms—that I should do what they told me. It’s the other way around—I tell them what to do and they follow. • Khan saheb, you played when the country attained independence, and you played at our 50th Independence Day. My elder brother and I had ordered new clothes made of thick khadi specially for the occasion. There must be a recording of that somewhere, the country’s independence celebrations. I don’t know who would have it. • What is your message now for the country? I would say only this: all is still not lost. If you dedicate yourself to what you learn, if you practise it sincerely, you will lose all fear of what may befall you. • You can forget all your troubles in music? Things will happen around you, and you will stop minding them. It happens to me. I was waiting for you before the interview. That’s alright. But I will not play for any and everyone. It takes two hours for me to tune this, and then it plays the way I want it to. It won’t be that I’ll wish it to do one thing and it will do something else. No. I will tell it what to do and it will do just what I say. • Your message to the world is that people should think about peace, rhythm and harmony, and they will be freed of their troubles. Look, Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian—whoever they are, they’re all one. Once people realise that and come into harmony with each other, there will be no more division. Bismillah Khan's Jaunpuri from the SAWF Music Articles Archive.

  19. This is some funky weird news........ Jathedars and SGPC reps avoid Sangat, attend anti Akal Takhat establishments Sunday 23rd of April 2006 EXCLUSIVE : Panthic Weekly News Bureau Selma, CA (KP) – The Jathedars of three Takhats along with the SGPC secretary, and Darbar Sahib manager became embroiled in another controversy when they avoided Panthic Sangat and Gurdwaras, yet visited institutions that did not follow the maryada implement by Akal Takhat Sahib and violated Hukamnamas barring tables and chairs from Langar halls. When they did visit a Gurdwara Sahib where Panthic maryada was followed, they declined to intermingle with the visiting Sangat. On April 20th, Akal Takhat Sahib Jathedar, Joginder Singh Vedanti, Takhat of Sri Keshgarh Sahib Jathedar Tarlochan Singh, Takhat of Sri Patna Sahib, Jathedar Iqbal Singh along with SGPC secretary Dilmegh Singh, Darbar Sahib Manager Roop Singh, and Granthi Ranjit Singh from Delhi visited the newly built Gurdwara Kalgidhar Sahib in Selma. It was their first stop on this trip at a Gurdwara where Akal Takhat Sahib maryada was actually being followed. All of their previous stops were at private deras and institutions, such as the 3HO and Nanaksar. Upon arriving, they gave their usual standard speeches, and spiels of, “Support Akal Takhat Sahib, do Sikhi parchar…..â€. Waiting for them were anxious local Sangat members, sevadars from as far as Los Angeles, Sacramento, and the Bay Area, some having driven several hundred miles so they could meet with Jathedars and discuss critical issues of importance. They included Bhai Bhajneet Singh, Bhai Prabhsharandeep Singh, Amardeep Singh and many others. Their questioned included: Why was Baba Daljit Singh of Chicago let off so easy and not instructed to retake Amrit? Why hasn’t Jathedar Vedanti taken any action against Badal’s wife for visiting Ashutosh? Why haven’t they taken actions against SGPC and DSGMC members that associate with RSS and attend their anti-Sikhi functions? Why haven’t they taken action against publishers such as Chatter Singh Jiwan Singh who are publishing and selling saroops of Guru Granth Sahib Ji against Akal Takhat Sahib Maryada? Why do they attend functions organized by deras that do not recognize the Maryada of Sri Akal Takhat Sahib? Why are the Jathedars attending 3HO functions, and addressing Yogi Bhajan with the “Sri Singh Sahib’ title? After some short speeches by SGPC secretary Dilmegh Singh, and Darbar Sahib manager Roop Singh, Jathedar Tarlochan Singh, Granthi Ranjit Singh of Delhi, Bhai Prabhsharandeep Singh spoke from the podium and welcomed the Jathedars. He then stated that the Sangat here is fully supportive of Sri Akal Takhat Sahib, and that of the actions taken against Gurbaksh Kala-Afghana, and the Joginder Singh, editor of Spokesman. Jathedar Vedanti listening to Prabhsharandeep Singh Video of Prabhsharandeep Singh's Speech These are good steps Prabhsharandeep Singh indicated, but questioned why more was not being done in isolating those who continue to support Kala-Afghana and the Spokesman editor. He also questioned why the Jathedars attended a function organized by the 3HO, which he stated was as a cult. “During the function, which was broadcast by SikhNet, Jathedar Sahib referred to Yogi Bhajan as ‘Sri Singh Sahib’â€, Prabhsharandeep Singh strongly protested. “How can the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takhat Sahib refer to anyone with that title? There is no precedence of it in Sikh history for anyone having such a title†he later added. Not expecting this line of questioning, the Jathedars were taken aback. Out of embarrassment Jathedar Vendati kept his head lowered when questioned. Several other speakers had also given their names so that they too could address the Sangat, but the Jathedars by now had become nervous, and immediately signaled to the management committee that they were not comfortable with this venue and that no one else should be allowed to speak. This move irritated the rest of Panthic individuals who wanted to be heard, but Jathedar Joginder Singh Vendati then pre-empted the time from the other speakers and walked to the podium to speak, causing some minor commotion amongst the committee members and the visiting Sangat. Out of respect, the rest of the sevadars sat back down quietly in the Sangat to hear what Jathedar Vendanti had to say. Instead of answering the queries put forth by Prabhsharandeep Singh, he digressed into other unrelated topics. The visibly shaken Jathedar claimed that “…this was not the setting to discuss such issues, and that if a discussion was to take place it must be done after the completion of this diwanâ€. He them implied that he was willing to sit down with anyone and entertain any and all questions from the Sangat. Afterwards, one of the sevadars from Los Angeles, Bhai Jhalman Singh, spoke from the podium and confirmed with Jathedar Vendanti that… “…..if they (the Jathedars) sit down afterwards then they would not ask for time in the diwan.†Jathedar Vendanti along with others agreed and gave their commitment to sit down after the diwan. This move was endorsed with a loud Jaikara from the Sangat. The diwan then concluded with the recitation of Anand Sahib, Ardas, and the reading of the Hukamnama. In the conclusion, the head Granthi of the Gurdwara spoke and suggested that the Jathedars only visit those Gurdwara Sahibs where Panthic maryada is followed and that instead of making their accommodations at people’s homes, they should stay in the Gurdwaras so they would be more accessible to the general Sangat. It needs to be noted that though the Jathedars do stay at the private residences of questionable wealthy individuals, such as liquor store owners, deradars and rich landlords has been criticized by many, their response is always, “They are the ones who pay for our tickets, so we stay with them.†As recently as last year, all the Jathedars were being entertained by Baba Daljit Singh of Chicago of ‘Motel Wakunda’ fame. The Jathedars would not answer queries about why they made so many trips to Baba Daljit Singh’s dera when they were warned by the Sangat on multiple instances not to associate with him. Breaking their word to the Sangat Once outside, the Jathedars quickly backtracked on their commitment to sit with the Sangat, and began walking towards their cars. “Aren’t you going to sit with the Sangat now?â€, one sevadar asked. Jathedar Vedanti was hesitating, but quickly SGPC secretary with others began to frisk him away pushing sevadars aside. This followed to a momentary confrontation between one of the young sevadaars and the secretary Dilmegh Singh, which was promptly brought under control. As tempers continued to rise, the Jathedars were now scattered throughout the front parking lot and surrounded by various Sangat members questioning why they are running away. Jathedars Vedanti, Iqbal Singh, and Tarlochan Singh being escorted away from Sangat Video of Jathedar Vedanti and Sangat One of the trip organizers mentioned that they had a prior engagement in the North Stockton-Lodi area. Amongst the chaos, Jathedar Vedanti and others were whisked into a minivan and escorted off the property but then quickly pulled off the road when they realized that their companions Dalmegh Singh and Roop Singh were left behind. The two were still being questioned and chastised by the angry Sangat as to why the SGPC was controlling the Jathedars to be used as puppets for their own selfish means. Panthic Weekly along with sevadars of the Khalsa Alliance approached the vehicle in which Jathedar Vedanti had ‘escaped’ from the questioning Sangat. The driver tried to roll up the windows and leave, but Jathedar Vedanti stopped him and allowed Panthic Weekly’s Amardeep Singh to ask several questions. These were Jathedar Vedanti’s responses: PW: Why was Baba Daljit Singh not instructed to take Amrit again? Jathedar Vedanti: Daljit Singh said he committed no kurehet, so why would we have punished him for something he did not admit to? We punished him for staying all night with another woman other than his wife, so he was absolved.†PW: Why aren’t you taking action against SGPC and DSGMC members that associate with the RSS? Jathedar Vedanti: We will take action. Give their names to us in writing, and we will take action. PW: What about publishers Chatter Singh Jiwan Singh who are publishing and selling saroops of Guru Granth Sahib Ji against Akal Takht Sahib Maryada ? Jathedar Vedanti: …….(does not answer question, his minivan sped off) The Jathedars were to attend the foundation laying ceremony of a new Gurdwara site in Lodi California. As one of the Singh’s questioned: “The new Gurdwara in Lodi? You mean that place that is run by ‘communists’, and supporters of Shergill’s brother?†referring to Hardev Shergill, a staunch supporter of Kala-Afghana, who was excommunicated from the Panth by Sri Akal Takhat Sahib. Hardev Shergill is rumored to also be involved with the same group since he had closed his dera in Roseville. In 2004 Shergill along with Gurtej Singh IAS, presented a ‘gold medal’ to Gurbaksh Kala-Afghana in Roseville for challenging the authority of Sri Akal Takhat Sahib, and the Panth. The Lodi group was the same anti-Akal Takhat Sahib crowd. They had originally tried to overtake Gurdwara Sahib Stockton, which is the oldest Gurdwara Sahib in America, founded by the Ghadarittes who were also known as ‘Ghadari-Babays’. Since Gurdwara Sahib Stockton followed Panthic Maryada of langar pangat, the Lodi group split off after an unsuccessful takeover attempt. Jathedar Vedanti attending a Gurdwara that blatantly violates Akal Takhat Maryada & HukamNamas Nevertheless, it did not matter to the Jathedars regarding their questionable destination nor that they were backing away from their commitments to the Sangat in Selma. They were more than anxious to leave the Sangat’s questions unanswered. Stated one Sangat member, “This instance only provided more evidence to fuel growing resentment in Panthic circles concerning the activities of the Jathedars and the SGPC officials’ abroad. We fully support the actions taken against Kala-Afghana, and the Spokesman editor, but why be silent on other issues such as Badal, derawadis and those who violate the Hukamanamas?" 20. 21. Gurfateh Sangat Ji, Though I am no scholar, gyani, or even knowledgable but from my prespective, I can say that Simran means to remember on the battlefield. So essentially, remembering Akal Purkh on the battlefield of the mind as we are constantly fighting the 5 evils.
  22. The Amrit of the Double-Edged Sword Siri Singh Sahib Bhai Sahib Harbhajan Singh Khalsa Yogiji addresses persons about to take Amrit. It is a very fortunate day today. This occasion comes once in a lifetime. To give your ego and become egoless is a very rare opportunity. Even if you want to call it a ritual, it is a ritual of self-contained consciousness. It is not so ordinary in the life of a man that he accomplishes his "longing to belong" to someone which is Infinity. In the beginning there was the Word. Word was with God, and the Word was God. You might not have experienced the Ultimate Truth of Infinity, but today, out of your emotional devotion, you are going to walk on that Path. It is a Path of Righteousness. Sat karam, sat kirit, sat gyaan. You are going to do something righteously on the Path of Righteousness, and you are going to know the Truth. Belonging to this fact of life is the way on which you are proceeding. It is not an easy path. Don’t misunderstand that this is just a ritual which you are doing. It is a test of your totality and personality. You have certain things to do, and you have certain sacrifices to make, and you have a certain way to live. That discipline, that tapas, that sanjam, is the way of life you are entering. It is your fortunate karma that your prayers are being answered. Understand one thing: if you would not have been existing in prayer, if you would not have had a longing to belong to someone, God would not have provided this opportunity. All prayers are not answered; all do not get to the Path and reach the destination. It is a rare opportunity. Mustuk bhaj jineh kay, tinha har sant milaya. The destiny is written on the forehead of some who meet the Saints and take the Path of Righteousness." It doesn’t happen to everyone all the time under all circumstances. Sometimes the longing to belong is so heavy, that God gives an opportunity to give self to Him. Today, you are going to be baptized in the Panth of Khalsa. Remember, the word Khalsa means "pure ones." Today the Amrit, this nectar, has been prepared out of the two-edged sword, which represents the negative force and positive force and on the very tip of this sword lives the soul of the being, which are Right Conduct and Right Consciousness. Now you are going to be baptized in that Panth. You are saying, "My will is Thine, O Lord, Thy Virtues are mine, whatever comes from Thee is all to me." You rise early in the morning, taking the Naam and reciting the Banis, living righteously, earning righteously and being in that Brotherhood. Whenever you meet each other you have to say, ‘Wahe Guru Ji ka Khalsa, Wahe Guru Ji ki Fateh!’ Your mantra will be Wahe Guru. It is a mantra of ecstasy. If the Seed Mantra, the Bij Mantra of Sat Nam has gone deep into your heart, then you will know better than anyone else, the rhythm of Wahe Guru, the mantra of ecstasy. Under all environments, the life of the Khalsa is the life of a soldier and a saint blended in one way of life. Sometimes, in this country especially, we do not understand the significance of a saint, nor the significance of a soldier. You might have thought that a soldier is one who kills. Then, you are the soldiers who are going to kill all the negativity and should live righteously in the light of God-consciousness to proceed on your path. Belonging together, living together, sacrificing together; today when you take this Amrit, sharing it, it means there is no difference of caste, creed, race or color. It is fortunate that you have been brought to this end now, to belong to someone, your own Creator, because of this consciousness for which you have longed through many incarnations. Last word of advice to you is: after receiving this chance which has come to you after many lifetimes, don’t miss it, and having taken it, never spoil it. Amrit
  23. and to add on that note, on Sunday, drawrof and myself attended a raag kirtan darbar at Nanaksar gurudwara and the raagi's did such an amazing job that for an hour noone in sangat was moving.
