Here are some of the notes that I made on prema-bhakti, which I copied from the site srigurugranthsahib.org which is run by Guru Nanak Data Baksh leh mission. The notes have all your answers. Dont waste your time in reaching mental states such as sunn, nothingness, emptyness—- focussing on avasthas and mental states is not the goal. Look for the qualities that are pleasing to the Guru.

“Complete surrender is an essential pre-requisite, pre-condition to enter the arena of the spiritual field of Divine Love. And then opens the door, the entrance to the Supreme Mansion of the Beloved Satguru.
Father invariably proclaimed in every congregation that Sri Guru Granth Sahib was the Living Lord, that Sri Guru Nanak Sahib was realisable, attainable from within the Divine Body of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, that the blessed ones could perceive Him physically and commune with Him and that humility and Prema Bhagti was the essential pre-requisite to attain Him. Utter Humility and intense yearning and Love was his own direct and personal experience. Communion with the Supreme Lord Sri Guru Nanak Sahib can be established through Prema, through intense and earnest devotional love, through humility, through strong impulse of rock-like faith in Him, through His benign Grace and so on, but certainly not on the basis of dry intellectualism.“

Guru Nanak is attainable. Possible for ordinary persons. This is good news.
Pre-Requisite for prema-Bhakt:
Complete surrender
Utter Humility
Intense & Earnest devotional Love
Rock-Like Faith
Intense yearning
Be Authentic, admit your faults before the Guru. If you have no faith admit it.

These kind of states come and go. Try not to pay attention to them, dwell too much in them. Classic example is where a person gets attached to being in such states and then that bcomes reality of the bandagi. Rather focus only on the prem aspect of bhagti and forget the rest.
