Meanings of Gurbani

Recommended Posts

As per my understanding:

All Gurbani has literal translations/meanings.

Furthermore it has other meanings as well that only the spiritually 'uchh avastha' people know of, either naturally due to their status or through a lifetime of study. (I think meta-physical meanings is the term.)

Also I think there are different meanings according to different sampardas and backgrounds; as mentioned by Giani Sant S. Maskeen: the dozens of different teekas of JapJi Sahib that are all different but correct in their own way.

Could you guys please expand on this, or have I got the completely wrong end of the stick?

No two people describe the taste of ice-cream in exactly the same way.

But they will both agree, it's delicious.

Even Guru's and Bhagats in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji describe places, experiences and dangers in different ways, it does't matter which way takes your liking, if you listen to and let that advice manifet in your life - the outcome will be the same.
