Bristol-Slavery-Seminar

The Sikh Education Council UK (SEC) is a team of professional Sikh volunteers concentrating

on esoteric Sikh teachings from the Shri Guru Granth Sahib and Sikh history working for the

betterment of humankind. We commemorate key milestones in Sikh history by organising

high-profile events to educate and empower people through the Sikh way.

Currently, our major project is to celebrate the tri-centenary of the establishment of the Khalsa

Republic by Baba Banda Singh Bahadur. We are organising a series of seminars in which we

propose to highlight the achievements of Banda Singh, by inviting comparisons to different

periods of world history, specifically the Slave Trade.

This seminar will focus on the Sikh concepts of Truth, Equality & Justice in the socio-political,

legal and economic Khalsa Republic of the early 18th century, showing how these policies and

concepts were unprecedented to the ‘modern world’ at that time. This blueprint of Banda

Singh will be contrasted to the abolition of slavery in the UK. The following five especially

selected speakers will explore this distinction:

1. Dr Robert Beckford, an academic and award winning broadcaster, has written

several books in the field of religion, culture and politics. Most recently, he

appeared on Channel 4 presenting a part of the History of Christianity Series.

2. Madge Dresser a Reader in History at the University of West England in Bristol, is

a published author and contributor to numerous documentaries. A Fellow of the

Royal Historical Society, her most recent research is on the impact of slavery.

3. Palbinder Singh of the SEC, is a researcher on the Khalsa Republics and author

of ‘Nankonianism.’ He will be speaking on the legacy of Banda Singh.

4. Baroness Caroline Cox of Queensbury is the author of; ‘This Immoral Trade:

Slavery in the 21st Century’ and ‘West, Islam & Islamism: Is Ideological Islam

Compatible with Liberal Democracy?’ She will be focusing on Humanitarian Aid

and Human Rights, in relation to the Sikh concepts of Equality and Justice.

5. Kerry McCarthy is the MP for Bristol East and a member of the All Party

Parliamentary Group for UK Sikhs. She will be addressing the seminar about

something close to her heart, campaigning for social equality and justice.

Dr. Pargat Singh, who will also take individual questions after the seminar, will give an

introduction and summary at the seminar.

The event will be held on Saturday 27th June, 2009 at Will’s Memorial Building, Queens

Road, Clifton, Bristol, BS8 1RJ. It will begin at 11am and last approximately 4 hours. Light

refreshments will be provided during a mid-afternoon comfort break.

The historic Wills Memorial Building has only limited capacity; to avoid disappointment you

are advised to book early. Tickets for the seminar are on sale now at £10 each and can be

bought online by clicking through the relevant link at www.TheSikhWay.com. All proceeds

from ticket sales will go towards the Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Project. For any further

queries please contact the SEC on banda@thesikhway.com
