JALANDHAR: Sukhbir Singh Badal Deputy Chief Minister Tuesday announced the constitution of a special cell under the Inspector General of Police to provide aid to the unfortunate brides deserted by their NRI husbands after marriage. The cell would also provide aid to the youth trapped in other countries, sent fraudulently by travel agents.

Announcing this decision in Punjab NRI Summit-2011 held here today, the Punjab Deputy Chief Minister said that state government has taken seriously the growing practice of NRIs fleeing after marrying Punjabi girls, leaving them in lurch. He said that this cell besides providing legal aid to the affected women, would also pursue the criminal case in the country where the NRI bridegroom has fled.

Expressing concern over growing practice of local travel agents fraudulently sending Punjabi youth through illegal routes, without any valid work visas, Badal said that this cell would also provide help to the youth trapped in other countries without any valid travel documents. The cell would also initiate criminal proceeding against the erring travel agents. He said the law enacted by the state government to check the activities of travel agents was awaiting President’s accent.

Badal said that after the economic recession in Europe and other Western countries Punjab was the right spot for NRIs for multiplying their wealth. He said the state was not after their money but seeking investment was to strengthen the emotional bonding with them. Badal said that it was the duty of NRIs to nurture the state from where they have immigrated.

Punjab NRI Affairs Minister Capt. Balbir Singh Bath welcomed the NRIs and Surjit Sing Rakhra, President NRI Wing, SAD, gave a brief outline of initiatives taken by the SAD-BJP government to strengthen the bonds with NRIs from the state. Speaking on the occasion, Varinder Sharma, MP from UK appreciated the development vision of Badal and urged to set up a State Information Bureau in UK to explain the investment opportunities in Punjab. He also demanded to take up the issue for granting visas liberally to the Punjabis settled abroad with Union External Affairs Ministry. He also advocated for some executive powers to the NRI Sabha.

Raj Atwal adds from Jalandhar: In a further bid to mitigate the sufferings of Non-Resident Indians in Punjab, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal has announced the setting up of an NRI Suvidha Centre in Jalandhar and a Fast Track Revenue Force in each and every district of the State. This is in addition to appointing an IG level police officer to check the plight of NRI brides in Punjab and jailed Punjabi youths abroad.

Today, with MNCs running to India, the country has become the land of opportunities and our NRIs should take advantage of India’s development. As far Punjab is concerned, it will be the power surplus State within the next year and a half,” Sukhbir said.

Going the extra mile in solving NRIs problems and saving them from corrupt practices, the Deputy CM said the Punjab Government would either outsource or privatise 70 odd public services in the State in about three months time. This is in his endeavour to make the state fully e-governable.

“Soon you (NRIs) will get all government records online abroad. This includes copies of FIRs and land records,” said Sukhbir, adding, “Now next time when you come to Punjab you don’t have to visit govt offices for these jobs like getting affidavits because 90 per cent demands of affidavits will be abolished soon.”

Sukhbir informed that . Gurpreet Deol will be the new IG Punjab who will personally look into the cases of harassment of ‘NRI brides’ in Punjab and abroad. She will work in coordination with some other Punjab Police officers and visit different countries abroad and also look into the problems of Punjabi youths lodged in jails there.
