6,000 aboriginal children died in 'cultural genocide' in Canadian residential school system, officials say

At least 6,000 aboriginal children died while in the residential school system in Canada, in a "cultural genocide", officials have said.

Justice Murray Sinclair, Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, who is responsible for studying the legacy of the residential schools, said the figure is an estimate and the true figure could be much higher.

"We think that we have not uncovered anywhere near what the total would be because the record keeping around that question was very poor," Sinclair told Rosemary Barton of CBC's Power & Politics. "You would have thought they would have concentrated more on keeping track."

The new death toll comes after comments from the chief justice of the Supreme Court, Beverley McLachlin, who said that Canada attempted to commit "cultural genocide" against aboriginal peoples.

"The most glaring blemish on the Canadian historic record relates to our treatment of the First Nations that lived here at the time of colonization," McLachlin said.

Canada, she said, sustained an "ethos of exclusion and cultural annihilation", an assessment which Justice Sinclair agreed with.

It's very sad, my wife grew up in northern bc where there were lot of natives. She saw first hand systematic institutionalized racism against natives. Even right now, whilst they have lot of treaties with gov't, living up in north where lot of natives live- is very expensive for natives to properly afford. They literally are given to two options- either integrate with urban anglo saxon canadian society where they can take advantage of subsidized housing/jobs or live in north and preserve their traditions in north and  suffer more as everything is more expensive (pack of fresh water bottles 12 - $24 CAD) and their many native chiefs are just like our corrupt badals- they don't help their own people, they eat all the money as well.

I spoke to someone who worked in the youth prison system in Canada: they had a really negative view of the natives. Is this reflective of the general perception of them out there?

Ahhh the Gorreh's actions uncovered again! Any European (because that's what they are) living in Australia, South Africa, and the Americas is not entitled to the land just because of their race. They did the same here in America, they committed genocide against the Natives and crammed the remaining ones into reservations. How disgusting.
