the website says: "Finally, the Akal Takht will return to its unifying role of engaging all Sikhs in the service of humanity."

since when are sikhs supposed to be "in the service of humanity"?

Sikhs should be serving God not "humanity".

You cannot serve God. You can worship God.

Did Guru Sahib not feed the hungry Sadhus ? We serve God by serving humanity. You cannot serve God directly. You don't have anything that God can't get himself. Yet you can serve his creation.

Here is one of the dictionary definition of the verb 'to serve': to work for; to do your duty to.   ("http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/serve")

How can you then say you cannot serve God? (You can see other meaning like there like 'give food or drinks to' (as in hospitality or 'service' industry) ).  Do you apply the above definition to humanity?  you thinks sikhs 'work for' humanity, do 'duty to humanity'?  can you not see how misguided that idea is? and how is that differant from atheism?

"You cannot servie God directly".  Nonesense.  This is exactly what you are called to do.  You serve God by remembering Him, honourinng His Name and His Will, enshrining Him in your heart, keeping Him in your mind, and serving his genuine devotees.  Isnt the whole idea of Khalsa that they ONLY serve God directly- hence forbidden from worshiping Devtas, visiting Graves of Saints etc

Clean hearted people are naturally compassionate.  They will give to the poor etc.  But thats not their aim.

Guru ji had much adoration for sincere sadhus and devotees- so in Gurbani he says things like he is dust of their feet and a sacrifice to them (kurbani).  (likewise he called out false sadhus- calling them butchers etc).  but charity work by itself is not worth a mustard seed compared to devotional service.

Seva also means to serve humanity. Key component of SIkhi.

please justify it as being 'key component of sikhi'?   From SGGS.

I'm not trying to be awkward.  I think this idea is more a projection on Sikhi, in order to appease modern humanist mindset.

Rather the  actual idea is more like how Jesus instructed his disciples- 'give with one hand without the other knowing what it is doing'- this is the way devotees behave.  they are generous yes, but they dont focus on it.  In the oldern days no siksh made a big deal of langar, it was just a given.

Contradiction in terms?  Are you saying that He can't take care of His own creation?

Also, if the Queen of England came to your house, are you saying you wouldnt offer her some tea etc?  Since she could always get it herself.

Devotees dont think like that, politicians do.

another point about 'serving humanity'-

the idea that you become like the person you serve- based on that should we 'serve' God or humanity?  (yes God is within humanity, but when people refer to humanity they usually don't mean that, they mean in a secular sense)

what exactly does this 'movement' want?  I couldnt see any details on their website.

Basically the "movement" wants Punjab to be free from the oppressors.

A takt where all Sikhs can go to to get guidance , help, support

Quote from their website

It is not enough to replace the current governance of the Akal Takht with new leadership. It’s how we arrive at new leadership, the process we undertake for decisions, and developing representative processes that will ensure our future leaders are equipped for success in their roles.

Our current leadership is a symptom of the lack of accountability and processes—the root cause for many of the issues faced by Sikh institutions. Most Sikhs in the diaspora have been focused on laying foundations in their new homes and providing for the basic needs of their families. There was no space or resource to develop coordinated responses to attacks or even to raise voices in articulating a response.

NEW METHODS

Today, we have tools for collaboration. We have a global and interconnected community. The lines between home and foreign lands has become increasingly blurred. With a community of Sikhs living under threat and oppression in Punjab, it is the global community that must organize and provide the thought leadership necessary to bring about change in Punjab.

The most powerful institution through which to effect positive change is the Akal Takht. If you have a desire to improve the condition of the Sikh community, you now have more opportunity and better ability to engage than at any time in history.

so they want the process by which the people who make desicions at the Akal Takht institution are elected to be reformed?  this is what i could deduce from all that.

they speak in alot of generalisations, and go on about 'leadership' (i.e. they are after power of some kind and not clairifying what exactly).  this to me sounds very creepy.

1. what challenges and changes do they mean?

2. what do they want changed and how?

3. what are they intending to do?  (my guess is start asking for $)

Akal Takht is for rulings pertaining to ceremonial/ethical principles.  its not a political body (from what i understand?) but they want it to become one?
