I think people are imagining a recreational use of afeem, whereas it was probably being used medicinally. As for Giani Gian Singh taking it being a negative - if this is so, we'd have to condemn Kavi Santokh Singh as well (which even the most conservative Sikh organisations/individuals freely quote). I think a lot of poetic types took certain psychotropic substances to aid them in their creativity back then.
