For us to experience God, we have to rise up to meet him and be at his upper head level in order to encounter his max grandeur entirety. We are so distanced and lower down that the first part we can grab to take this climb is his charan. His charan are the most extreme and farthermost part of SATch that can reach us lowly earthlings! These charan are the ultimate part of Nirankaar that we may experience first. They are "Naam" and the anhad shabad itself. We want to grab hold of this naam as if a ship, and let it carry us through maya and the turbulent bhavsagar. Hence, "Nanak naam jahaaz hai" Gurbani tells us that we can only start getting purified once we start drinking the amrit that washes the layers off filth on our Mind.
