Can you change the world?

No one can change the world single-handedly! That’s why we have pressure groups, activitists, power brokers,  influence peddlers/lobbyists! There is nothing superficial about them! Without their invaluable foresight and influence policy making is impossible and stands no chance of ever becoming laws let alone rules!  He needs to rethink what he is saying. Why does he think it’s too “public” to express how to end  any kind of suffering/poverty?  Besides, what the hell is so funny and why are they all laughing? So stupid!  None of the issues that mar our western societies today are funny! There are some things we should be doing in the ‘confines’ of our privacy ( for self development)  but there are other things which have a detrimental affect on masses, and should never be kept private and should be talked about openly and publicly! How can a person establish himself by accomplishing whatever he believes in, in the world before embarking upon any career, does the world not consist of people/public?

If you look at Moscovici's work on minority influence, it is possible for small groups to change the entrenched thinking of the majority. It isn't easy, but it is possible. I think more realistically and practically (as Sikhs) we should be focusing on regional change where required for the moment. A lot of our scattered sub-communities have various problems like grooming, being attacked for some perceived relationship with Osama Bin Laden, general loss of values from majority culture influence etc. (especially but not solely with young impressionable females) These are the things we need to work on.

You talk about "pressure groups, activitists, power brokers,  influence peddlers/lobbyists", but in England at least these tactics (which have been tried for decades) seem to have little to no effect. It may well be that instead of top down influence, a better approach would be to tackle things from grassroots level until those 'above' are compelled to deal with the issues. This requires balls and tenacity which a lot of conservative (and lets be frank coward) apnay don't seem to possess, but there are still some apnay out there that haven't turned into complete invertebrate sycophants.

People (especially politicians) are really good (and in the latter case expert!) at fobbing people around with false promises. Sikhs fall prey to this routinely.
