Chritar 95: Tale of Bindo

Chaupaee

There was a daughter of a Jat, the peasant, she came to us for begging.

She called herself as Bindo; she was an accomplice of the thieves.(1)

She took an earthen-pitcher and put in it linseeds.

After putting four nails in it, she buried it (at the back ofthe place).(2)

She came and told the Raja, ‘Some maid has performed an incantation.

‘If you desire and order yourself, and I will display it to you.’(3)

She took Raja and showed him and put all the people in whim.

She proved it to be true and none could acquiesce her trick.(4)

When the backbiting reacted, the Raja summoned that maid.

She was beaten with whips but she did not murmur.(5)

In spite of beating she did not confess and the Raja thought she was stubborn.

At the night when they were discussing, she ran away.(6)

The Raja sent guards to catch her and put her in the cell.

He made her to take poison and dispatched her to the domain of death.(7)(1)

This one seems to have parallels with the famous/controversial chariter that some people attribute to dasmesh pita's life where a women tries to trick the 'raja of Anandpur' by promising to show him some incantation?

I still don't get the connection to the pitcher with linseed and nails to the mantar she was trying to show the raja?

Just a thought as I was starting this topic. This is number 95 and we are into June. I had set myself a lofty target of getting to charitar 100 by the beginning of this year. Hopefully by the end of this month we can get to 100.

The translation of the story is also unusual as it seems to be a first person narrative. The narrator also tells thats Bindo had acted in this way, so that means at some stage her story or actions had become known.

Bindo tells the King that someone has done "toone" on him - Black magic. She says she can show him the actual concuction which has the things that are used for black magic. The seeds and nails etc. The King get scared and because Bindo has shown these to him, he believes that she has some kind of power. So he believes her word when she frames an innocent woman, who ends up being poisoned.

The accused maid, however brutal the whipping, has nothing to reveal and stays steadfast, taking the punishment. This points at something that the writer wants the reader to know.

Listen to this if you have time:

Okay the Panjabi translation makes much more sense than the English one.
