Woman and her lover convicted for murder of husband after minor son testifies in UP's Shahjahanpur

UTTAR PRADESH: A local court in Shahjahanpur has convicted a British citizen and her lover for the murder of her husband, seven years ago.

Ramandeep Kaur Mann, a UK national, with the help of her childhood friend Gurpreet Singh, killed her husband Sukhjeet Singh on September 2, 2016.

The court convicted the two on the testimony of Ramandeep's nine-year-old son.

Ramandeep planned a month-long family vacation in Uttar Pradesh with her husband and two kids, aged six and nine.

She got Gurpreet, a native of Kapurthala in Punjab, and brought the two men to Shahjahanpur, where she poisoned the entire family before slitting her hubby's throat. However, that night one person had skipped the poisoned dal-rice -- her nine-year-old son -- and survived.

The boy had then told reporters, "My dad was great but my mom was bad and I don't want to see her face ever because she killed my dad in front of my eyes. She kept a pillow on my dad's face and asked Gurpreet to slit his throat."

The boy's claims were crucial to the case and local police later filed a supplementary charge sheet with the testimony.

Prosecuting counsel, Ashok Kumar Khanna, said, "The court of additional district and sessions judge Pankaj Kumar Srivastava in Shahjahanpur pronounced Ramandeep and Gurpreet guilty under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 34 (criminal acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) and will decide the quantum of punishment on October 7."

He added, "Gurpreet has also been convicted under section 4/25 of the Arms Act. This is a rarest of the rare case as the victim's throat was slit in front of his nine-year-old son. We want capital punishment for both the accused who were sent to Shahjahanpur jail on Thursday."

Khanna said, "Gurpreet during his confession in front of the police said that he and Ramandeep planned to commit the murder in Uttar Pradesh because they thought they would get away by spending money."

Sukhjeet's mother, now 75, said, "I am here to fight for my son who was wronged. I want him to get justice."

The couple are said to have been indulging in a sordid affair since last November and have now been paraded in front of the media with their faces covered.

Last night Ramandeep's family in England denied the allegations and claim Sukhjit was actually killed over a land dispute.

Despite that Gurpreet Singh has been filmed appearing to confess to the crime.

Cops told a press conference on September 1st Ramandeep, 31, put sleeping pills in her family's dinner before letting Gurpreet into her mother-in-law's house in Shahjahanpur, Delhi.

Gurpreet then allegedly hit Sukhjit, 34, on the head with a hammer while Ramandeep smothered him with a pillow as he lay sleeping next to his children, aged six and nine.

Police believe the lorry driver also had his throat cut with a butcher's knife to make sure he was dead.

Gurpreet was arrested moments before he was due to board a flight to Dubai, and Ramandeep is believed to have handed herself in to Indian police.

They are alleged to have started an affair after Sukhjit reunited his friendship with when the couple visited India.

Sukhjit, who had been living with his family in Derby since 2014, is said to have refused Ramandeep's request for a divorce - but it is unclear whether he knew of the affair.

He was found with serious injuries last Thursday while on a month-long trip to India.

Ramesh Kumar Bhartiya, Assistant Superintendent of Police (Ruralr), Shahjahanpur said: "We got a call from the relatives of Sukhjit in the morning. He was attacked between 12-1am.

"He had slept with wife and children in a room on the first floor of his ancestral house in Shahjahanpur. His throat was slit with what seemed to be a big knife attack. He was also hit by hammer.

"We first thought it was a case of family feud. But after examination and checking call records of his wife Ramandeep Kaur, we realised Mitthu aka Gurpreet Singh had called her late night.'

"She was not at all cooperative at first and said she cannot speak Hindi since she was born in the UK. "But during interrogation she revealed that she had developed a romantic relationship with Gurmeet - Sukhjit's childhood friend last year and they both planned to live together.

"But when Sukhjit, who had no idea of her affair, refused to divorce her, they planned to kill him. "

Family and friends back in England strongly deny the Indian police version of events and are now preparing to launch a legal battle to free Ramandeep.

Friend Nick Rai, 53, property landlord said: "I've been speaking to Ramandeep's sister who is a solicitor in London

"Ramandeep and Gurpreet have been jailed in India but Ramandeep has been framed

"He was murdered by a local man and relative over a land dispute, it was nothing to do with an affair there was no love triangle.

"Sukhjit's mother warned him he was in danger but he ignored it. He knew he was in danger because he was carrying a gun around with him."

Jaz Rai, a friend of Sukjit's who attended the same temple as him, paid tribute to the 'perfect friend'.

He said: "He was the perfect friend and the perfect neighbour. He was a very good bloke and a lovely man.

"He adored his family and he was a loving dad.

"He was a family man and was known for volunteering and helping out in the community.

"He did a lot of good work and made sure people were always OK.

"What has happened is very shocking."

A woman whose son lives next door to the couple, who did not want to be named, said: "They're a lovely couple.

"They've been here less than two years.

"I think it's all rubbish – I don't think what's being said is true.

"They didn't seem to have any difficulties at all."

British Sikh woman gets death penalty in India for killing husband

Ramandeep Kaur, 38, from Derby, was convicted of the murder of her husband, Sukhjit Singh, 34, during their vacation at his mother’s residence in India in 2016

A court in India’s Uttar Pradesh’s awarded death penalty to a British Sikh woman for murdering her husband with the help of a friend seven years ago.

Ramandeep Kaur, 38, from Derby was found guilty of murdering her husband Sukhjit Singh, 34, while they were on holiday in India in 2016.

Her friend and accomplice Gurpreet was sentenced to life imprisonment with a fine of £2,960 by the court in Shahjahanpur on October 7.

Singh was sleeping with his sons Arjun and Aryan, when he was killed by Kaur and Gurpreet, additional district government counsel Shree Pal Verma said.

Arjun told the court during a hearing that his mother smothered Sukhjeet with a pillow and then, Gurpreet hit him with a hammer on his head. Then, Gurpreet took out a knife from his pocket and gave it to Kaur, who slit her husband’s throat, Verma said citing Arjun’s testimony.

The prosecution said Sukhjeet, his wife, and sons Arjun Aryan visited his native place in Shahjahanpur in August 2016. Gurpreet, from Punjab, accompanied them.

Singh was found murdered in the house on September 2, 2016.

Hours after her sentencing, Kaur said she is being “framed” by her husband’s family members, a jail official said.

Kaur said she will appeal against the capital punishment, according to the official.
