  1. Are you kidding me? Ataturk improved the literacy rate of his country.
  2. You can read the complete original work here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/57000534/Devi-Poojan-Partaal
  3. We complain about the dwindling numbers of Sikhs in Panjab and how this effects the demographics, so we should be happy to get these industrious guys, who will have business experience, back there to help bolster numbers and the economy (especially as indigenous Sikh Panjabis seem to have no initiative of their own other than running off to the west). Sure, it's sad to see a long standing community disappear like that in Kabul but then what idiot would willingly let his children grow up being constantly harassed and belittled. What kind of psychological effect will this have on them when they grow up? It isn't even like they can fight back, because I'm sure ALL the sullay would join up against the uppity kaffir, if they did. I had a similar problem with a young cousin of mine in a school in London who was bullied by sullay children in primamry school. The teachers didn't do anything. As regards to the parents, I'm sure this is where the kids probably learn their hatred from in the first place.
  4. Thanks for the clarification: I thought it meant Pre Menstrual Tension for a moment.
  5. Northerners..... http://www.itv.com/central-east/dudley-disorder56929/
  6. Making people take Amrit and live along spartan Khalsa lines i.e. no drink/drugs or consumerist focused existences. A focus on prayer/religion.
  7. Plan B could be a longer term one where people start a campaign to persuade the bulk of the Dudley community to not support these actions. Once the majority go this way, then it makes the job easier.
  8. Maybe being 'brought into politics' is an overstatement. Maybe it would be more accurate to say that they (Congress) tried to get mileage out of a charismatic, popular, upcoming preacher who was having noticeable success at what he was doing? Also, don't think that lower grunts (i.e. the police) are necessarily in the know about the schemes of the high ranking politicians. I don't think he was their pawn. They may have tried to use him, but he didn't play their game. If anything that makes him the absolute opposite of a 'pawn', whatever that may be called (if their is a word for it).
  9. Bhai ji I think that should be 'pawns' not 'ponds'. Yes I agree, he saw through the ruse and reacted openly defiantly. I wonder at what exact point did the government realise that they had underestimated him and miscalculated it all? Or were they relying on what happened all along, so they could unleash what they did afterwards?
  10. I haven't read it all yet, but it looks interesting. Be forewarned, it's quite long.
  11. I still love the millai off boiled milk, now more than ever. If a millai making machine was ever invented, certain Panjabis would be ODing on it. lol Another thing I like is boiled milk with a few crushed green cardamons in it. The subtle favour of the laychees really compliments to milk! A match made in heaven.
  12. Try boiling some broken up cinnamon sticks (a fair few) and a few table spoons of 'sonf' (fennel seeds?). Boil it well. Makes a lovely herbal tea that is naturally sweet. As a side note: Has anyone noticed that desi flavours and tastes that we may have considered 'gross' as youngsters come back in adulthood with a vengeance, and we actually seek them out and take great comfort in them. Strange phenomena! lol
  13. However Sant ji was introduced to the situation, his reaction on learning that his people were being placed in the middle of political shenanigans wasn't surprising. I think they (Congress) may have originally thought that they had a compliant, mouldable figure on their hands, but sant ji wasn't the backboneless, compromising type.
  14. I'm glad someone is thinking ahead. Indians are too pussy for such things.
  15. Nice one! Good to have. I like the way you can hot link to a particular shabad from the TOC.
  16. Given the situation and the fact that they have no loyalty to the Dudley Gurdwara it is a bit despicable of them to 'grass up' in this way - that is if they did. If the police 'demanded' the footage that is another matter altogether but if they volunteered it, they should be ashamed of themselves. My 2 rupees worth.
  17. Codes seem to have frequently been used as in this letter from a wounded soldier in Brighton to a friend in India. Here black pepper refers to Indian soldiers whilst red pepper refers to British troops: * 'The Indian troops fight more fiercely than the British troops'
  18. I've had it. My flatmate used to get it. It's like a packaged, marketed version of the kind of masala tea we make at home. I find the notion that Buddhists used caffeine as a stimulant to help focus meditation interesting.
  19. Interesting extract from a Hindi letter sent to India. The soldiers makes observations on French society and religion also commenting on the perceived state of religion in India:
  20. The izzat thing has become a liability now. It doesn't help us but hinders us in it's current form. It just seems to boil down to hypergamy today, nothing else. We need a better value system than one based on status and avoiding 'bitchy' comments from relatives and members of your pendu biradari, to the extreme of committing murder or suicide because of them. Watch whitey focus on it to bash us and continue with the 'savage, backward, uncivilised, unevolved' narrative. The shame is that in this area at least, they may well be right...... Why didn't you tell me this before!! I can't believe I have been talking to you! I have to have a shower now! <I'm joking before you start crying>
