  1. I don't know from where the idea that Rehras should be done at sunset has become embedded in my head? I notice that Nand Lal's Prashan Uttar (Mcleod's translation) says: His translation of Prem Sumarag says: I think the sunset thing definitely stems from someplace other than my imagination....or I'm losing it? lol Does Bhai Gurdas mention Rehras?
  2. What I find hard to grasp is how even a shred of common sense hasn't prevailed in our society about these things. It isn't too much to expect some sort of adaptation of cultural practices to lessen the pressure that leads to this type of thing. I have to say, even goray came out with the idea of setting fixed reachable dowrys when they were dealing with this issue post annexation. Am I the only one that is surprised with the way our lot seem to go round in circles on some of the most backward of issues? I know for a fact that soldiers who fought in WW1 noticed the marriage practices in Europe, and spoke of them favorably, yet still, we just don't progress? It's like we just accept the most retarded of practices with a shrug of our shoulders. And this one can't even be explained away by the straight lack of education (or penduness and whatnot) because we have urban classes doing the same shite as well. The mind boggles.
  3. Any ideas of why Muslims stuck rigidly to their pre-mechanical clock system and we (apparently) became more relaxed about it? This isn't a cue to sullah bash, in case anyone takes it that way. Genuine opinions are sought.
  4. To be honest, I'm glad. Stops the Pakis from going mental on streets around here.
  5. So if pehrs are broadly of equal size (???) they must be around 3 hours each?
  6. Today went Gurdwara and did Rehras, finished at 7.00pm. It did feel unusual to have finished Rehras when it was still daylight.
  7. Most of us have probably noticed the earlier start of the day in the UK. So I checked for sunset/sunrise times in London and found this: http://www.gaisma.com/en/location/london.html I was just pondering it along the lines of how traditionally Sikhs prayed along solar cycles (i.e. morning prayers and simran in run up to sunrise) and Rehras around sunset. If you look at the table in the link, it shows quite a large difference will steadily take place between these two points of a day over the next few months. Now if we were hypothetically to try and pray along solar rhythms (as it seems was originally intended), that would mean serious adaptation! I mean right now the sun starts to rise about 5.20ish and sets (it gets significantly darker) at around 7.30/7.45ish. In a few months theoretically we are looking at Rehras well after 9.00 pm! I asked a freshy at the Gurdwara about sunset and sunrises back home and he said they were pretty stable/steady with a slight change across seasons but nothing as dramatic as what we experience here. Interesting stuff.
  8. Is this really simply down to dowry? Seems awfully backwards.
  9. You just can't handle the fact that I detest people who use their caste to try and restructure the Sikh community with some bullshit hierarchy along their own egotist self promotional line. If it were some other sub-community doing similar, I'd be letting them have it too. Deal with it. Don't make oblique excuses for it. If behind all of this you are caste proud, just own up to it, instead of lurking around in the closet. Highlighting and detesting divisive, egocentric ideology amongst us isn't 'hating' it's being progressive.
  10. I hope it doesn't turn out that the clown who took off his pagh himself comes from a Sikh background. I too thought that the original copper (with the dastar) was saying 'pagh nahin lohnee' as in don't take of his pagh. Then the arsehole seems to just do it anyway.
  11. Are you trying to break some record for creating the world's longest sentence ever? The above seems garbled and I'm struggling to make sense of it. You seem to sprawled out a lot of different ideas without punctuation? Back to the original question: How exactly does Rumi claim his work has divine providence? Do you have some quotes? I'm just wondering if trying to compare gurbani to his work is comparing two things with entirely different purposes?
  12. Does Rumi's work claim to offer salvation on reading and adhering to it?
  13. I don't eat halal. But seeing as all the shops around me are Muslim I do buy sabjee from them. I have no sullay friends so the question of eating with them doesn't come up.
  14. I vaguely recall reading instructions 'not to eat from the hands of a turk' in an old rehit. We certainly can't eat halal anyway.
  15. They're probably going to say they found 5 kilos of RDX in his pagh next......
  16. No I'm not. When I make a comment people complain, then when I say absolutely nothing some phudu drags me into the topic for not saying anything. It's you lot who are messed up. lol By the way look up Linda McCartneys vege range G.Kaur.
  17. Guys don't be so unwelcoming man! It's good to get a female perspective on things here. I just saw a video of an Indian chef cooking magaz!! Curried lambs brains!! wth!! You'd never believe it unless you saw it. -- --------------------------- Zulu, you didn't have to go where you did with the Chinese comment. It's like you was talking from experience.
  18. I must say that Shankarchaya piece seems to have more breadth and depth than the Bulleh Shah work (which I love). Thematically it seems more closer to Jaap Sahib to me.
  19. That's the same type of simplistic thinking that has some Chinese people thinking eating tiger penis will make them more virile.
  20. Someone on SS recently accused the place of brainwashing (I think it's the same place):
  21. When did this become a stigma? That's just being provocative for the sake of it. lol As for eating hooves and brains....... wtf! <note to self - NEVER accept a dinner invitation to Maha Singh's house EVER>
  22. You've gone and set Zulu off! Jah selasi eye! lol Lick down babylon!
