Shalok: Air is the Guru, Water is the Father, and Earth is the Great Mother of all. Day and night are the two nurses, in whose lap all the world is at play. Good deeds and bad deeds-the record is read out in the Presence of the Lord of Dharma. According to their own actions, some are drawn closer, and some are driven farther away. Those who have meditated on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and departed after having worked by the sweat of their brows - O Nanak, their faces are radiant in the Court of the Lord, and many are saved along with them!
  2. Interesting, but are we projecting esoteric meanings of sperm/eggs etc. onto the slok? I wonder what Prof. Sahib Singh has to say about it?
  3. HSD, I'll read your stuff - When I have a straight week free. But really, in the meanwhile, please actually spend some time with Panjabis, not 3rd or 2nd gen British ones, but ones from back home and actually get some real sense of the type of people that make up the majority of the panth. I think you're actually so far removed from them, that you need this to get a more realistic perspective on things. In the meanwhile don't write another 2500 word essay in reply to this. Wait till I go through your other mammoth posts and respond to them please. PS - if I've introduced you to the notion of orientalism in relation to Sikhs, don't get over excited and think I am suggesting that it is the only perspective that we should use to interpret the past and present (as useful as it is).
  4. Why would you do it? Why would you let people who are likely to find this hilarious and spread it to their wider community, see this? The mind boggles. Next time consider switching it off when such people come around.
  5. Making the most tenuous links/connections and then going on like they are some sort of unquestionable truth is what is absurd. I applaud your creative imagination in interpretation but please realise that you (or any of us here) certainly have no 'extra powers' to interpret esoteric meaning in bani. It possibly refers to all manner of things, including nature/ecology. I'm not saying it is a manual on ecology, just that it is alluded to (possibly?). Consider: I could be wrong but these storehouses seem to imply 'that from which the Lord provides us sustenance'. The point about it being put into place 'once' implies some sort of cyclic system that fulfills our needs here on earth. I don't think it is absurd to consider that at least a part of this is related to the ecological system we have been given that sees to our needs (God's storehouse if you will). The fact that it was put down once implies it was perfect and that (possibly) man through excessively interfering with it could damage this God given perfect system? Whatever we come out with are (in the end) just lowly human reflections and attempts at expansion (ਵਿਸਤਾਰ) on something we ALL need to do A LOT bhagti towards to even begin to grasp on a higher level. So give the supercilious tone a rest mate.
  6. Tejikaur is really clued up about Gurbani grammar. We should ask her maybe? Any way. Air (gases), water, earth. Is Guru ji perhaps talking about the deeper principles underlying the ecosystem? I mean when man really messes about with 'mother earth' chopping down tries and pumping it full of chemical gases, it seems to have a very negative effect on the oxygen (pavan) and the water (pani) levels start acting up? I agree that pavan can mean more than just air/gas but I'm not if that applies here. The tri-formulation of gas, liquid and earth occurs again in bani in this way on panna 146: I don't know if they are related but another similar 'triple formula' that occurs a number of times in bani is one of air, water and fire, as in: A contextual example:
  7. That is one case out of twenty in SGGS ji. I'd go for air myself. Found this in MK: "ਅਖੀ ਅੰਧੁ ਜੀਭ ਰਸੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੰਨੀ ਪਵਣੁ ਨ ਵਾਜੈ". Any idea what the bit in red is saying?
  8. I thought pavan was air, wind, oxygen, gas type thing?
  9. I didn't watch the program but your assessment could apply to Southall in general.
  10. I've edited the original post to include a link to scribd which contains the whole article and is easier to read.
  11. I've had his The Sikh Religion for years (more than 10!). I have gone through some of them years ago but now that I know a whole lot more about him, his times, the significance of the people he collaborated with and the nature of the sources he used, it would be like reading it all totally afresh.
  12. Seems like he was? I used to think it was the rantings of over zealous Sikhs too....but looks like it might have been true. Apparently he left the copyright to his work to Kahn Singh Nabha and was heard reciting JapJi Sahib shortly before his death according to his Panjabi Musalman servant. There was also a hoo-ha about his burial in London as he was deemed to have 'gone native' and was thus undeserved of a burial in a Christian graveyard. If you think about it, his was the first work which properly pushed the untampered views of Sikh gyanis in English. But all was not cosy, he was apparently ostracised by the British establishment for turning Sikh and other Sikhs were (at times) reluctant to stand by him lest they lost favour with their new English masters.
  13. Farmers should jump on this and loads of other ideas and diversify away from the typical wheat, rice crops.
  14. This is a little known but fascinating article on Macauliffe containing a few details of his life that I don't think are generally known. The author has kindly agreed for me to share it with you. I'd say that most externally sourced academic accounts on Sikhs (or Sikh related matters) come from a strongly Anglocentric bias. This makes up much of the material we typically end up reading. So I found it refreshing to read this 3rd perspective - loyal neither to us or our former 'masters'. Personally I think it nails some of complexities of the dynamics involved in our recent history very well. Well worth a read by any conscious Sikh. From Templeglantine to the Golden temple: religion, empire and Max Arthur Macauliffe http://www.scribd.com/doc/49597872 Enjoy! Addition: I've put it on scribd and rotated the pages the right way up - should be easier to read now!
  15. I think I need to take time to explain this to you. How is that 'rich'? Do you disagree that 'mainstream' accounts of people's history and societal behaviour has been presented in a way that denigrates them in a nuanced (or even open) way? Plus lets be frank when I say 'mainstream' here, we are really talking about the Anglo dominated narrative. Now this is where it gets complicated. Whereas most people with a brain have rejected this shite and have written powerful counter-narratives (conspicuous examples could be conscious African-America lit and the Arabic sourced 'Orientalism'), our own wallies haven't even got that far and frequently perpetuate and identify with biased narratives that were used to control us and justify our subjugation. Hence so many dicks believe they are the descendants of some white European Aryans or Scythians and used this to try and arrange some hierarchical society in Panjab. Now here's where you need to pay close attention. It's now our own people who buy into this shite and weaken their own society with it. Hence, after identifying the externally sourced antecedents, the emphasis needs to be on how WE change. The onus is on us to present and disseminate a more positive and honest narrative for ourselves. But let's be frank, if someone was to put about a theory amongst poorly educated, unsophisticated rural folk that helps foster an egocentric world-view and appeals to their haumai, they are generally going to cling onto the thing like a crab (ahem....Tony). Anyway. Put it down to a difference of opinion. I just subscribe to the notion that before we use anything in the big bad world, we'd better make sure it was running efficiently and coherently or else we'll just end up in deeper doo doo. That's why my emphasis is on internal refinement before any big outward movement. If done any other way I guarantee you that outsiders will exploit the internal issues to derail anything being attempted. Tell me this hasn't and isn't happening right now anyway. Plus we are a community that outsiders seem to know how to manipulate to fine detail. That's probably why so many outside people have been writing books on us for so long. People know us intimately and we are largely clueless about these very people. What did you expect? That place is hardly known for people with worldly wisdom.
  16. Most of the things that keep us down today are internally sourced. Plus running away isn't all the issue, it's more people not being able to produce and implement plans that work instead of the myopic, pea brained ones You lost me there. Must be a 3rd gen thing? I'm not surprised about the conspiracy theory thing though, there is so much underhand skulduggery going on in even so-called first world governments, that it makes people prone to imagine all sorts of goings on. Who knows, some of it may have some provenance in truth? I think the phrase 'fallen from grace' is one that rings too true.
  17. lol I'm not going to take the bait. That would take me to very low depths. Come come child. Things will be okay in the end. Here's hoping that the 3rd gen doesn't become the one that loses the plot completely.
  18. Well, I can't help but think all your strongly proSikh posts are compensating for something .....lol
  19. I tried to keep quiet. I swear I did. Then old McTony had to drag me in...... Anyway HSD...don't give me lectures you... ......wait for it..... ...............wait for it..... Don't start crying, I'm only joking (partially). hee hee
  20. Do I get to wear one of those brightly coloured 'man-skirts' as well? You know the ones with the gold embroidery on the edges? Clown. Tell the truth about peasants, they complain. Say nothing, they complain. lol Anyway the rest of you, you are falling for 'Old McTony's' trick. He just wants to you to give him an opportunity and excuse to start talking about farmers. It's what makes his type most happy. Don't fall for it. lol But on a serious one. Truth is that that tightly controlled stuff over daughters isn't going to work in the west for more than a few generations at best. It's already creaking in the UK. From what I hear, there is also A LOT of surreptitious relationships going on back home too. I know if you are a pendu, this may be difficult to grasp, but we might, just MIGHT, want to try and resolve things within the community in a slightly less destructive way than murder. Maybe.
  21. When you clock how many apneean have undercover relationships with all and sundry in the UK - if the original post example was followed, the bundhay in our community would probably have little time for anything other than murder. lol Those of you allowed out after dark in the UK and don't live in caves should know this. If that girl was being 'forced' by some bloke, I'd be saluting the father for dealing with him in this way. Whatever his background, Sikh or not. However, seeing as his daughter is more than likely as guilty as the 'romeo' or at least reciprocal to his amorous advances, it's just clownish to solely blame the bloke for their relationship. As for those who were saying he got what he deserved for sneaking around like that. Well, do you think if he came over respectfully to the father and asked for his daughter's hand, he would have been treated with respect and whatnot. Wake up. And what the hell is a Valmiki? I thought he was the bloke who wrote Mahabharat?
  22. Did you ever stop to consider that Jatti may have been a BIG slag? It's nothing surprising, come to London and you can meet plenty of Jatti slappers if you don't believe me. He should have done a better job in teaching his daughter to keep her legs closed maybe??
Bhareeai Hathu Pairu Tanu Dayh. When the hands or feet or body are dirty Paanee Thotai Outrasu Khayh.. Then this dirt can be washed with water Word By Word ਭਰੀਐ -Bhareeai - to be filled (of dirt here), to be dirty, to be filthy ਹਥੁ -Hathu -hands ਪੈਰੁ -Pairu -feet ਤਨੁ -Tanu -body ਦੇਹ-Dayh-also body ਪਾਣੀ- Paanee -water ਧੋਤੈ -Thotai - to wash, is washed, washing ਪਾਣੀ ਧੋਤੈ-Paanee Thotai- wash with water, ਉਤਰਸੁ -Outrasu - comes off, gets removed ਖੇਹ - Khayh-dirt ,dust, filth In a nutshell When the hands or feet or body are dirty, that that dirt can come off when washed with water A little Deeper If someone gets dirt (soil) on their hands or feet or body then they are able to wash this clean by using water. Moot Paleetee Kaprhu Hoei.. If a cloth is soiled with urine. Day Saaboonu Leeeaai Ohu Dhoei.. Then it is washed with soap. Word By Word ਮੂਤ -Moot -urine ਪਲੀਤੀ -Paleetee- dirty, soiled, polluted ਮੂਤ ਪਲੀਤੀ -Moot Paleetee-Soiled with urine, dirty with urine, polluted with urine ਕਪੜੁ - Kaprhu -cloth ਹੋਇ - Hoei-to happen, to be done ਦੇ -Day - to take, taking ਸਾਬੂਣੁ -Saaboonu -soap ਦੇ ਸਾਬੂਣੁ- Day Saaboonu- by taking soap ਲਈਐ -Leeeaai- this word means to be done when referring to the deed for example it means here (the cloth's) washing is done ਓਹੁ -Ohu - That polluted cloth, that soiled cloth ਧੋਇ - Dhoei -wash, to wash ਲਈਐ ਧੋਇ- Leeeaai Dhoei - washing to be done, to do washing on, to be washed In a nutshell If any cloth is dirty/soiled with urine, than it is washed with soap. A little Deeper So here Guru Sahib explains that if a piece of cloth is soiled with urine than it is washed with soap. Bhareeau Mati Paapaa Kai Sangi.. (But) If a person’s intellect is stained with sin Ohu Dhopai Naawai Kai Rangi.. Then this sin can only be cleaned with love of the Naam Word By Word ਭਰੀਐ -Bhareeau -to be full (of filth here), to be dirty/defiled with filth, filthy ਮਤਿ -Mati -intellect, mind, one's thinking ਪਾਪਾ -Paapaa -sins ਪਾਪਾ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ- Paapaa Kai Sangi-with sins ਓਹੁ -Ohu =that (in this case sin) ਧੋਪੈ -Dhopai -can be washed, is able to be washed ਨਾਵੈ -Naawai- the Naam of the Timeless Being ਰੰਗਿ -Rangi-love ਨਾਵੈ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ- with Love of the Naam of the Timeless Being In a nutshell (However) If (a human's) intellect becomes defiled with sin, than this sin can only be washed clean with love of the Naam of the Timeless Being. A little Deeper While outer dirt can be washed away, the only means of cleaning the mind is by loving the Naam. God's love chases sins away, the way that a roaring lion scares away sheep. When one loves God then their heart becomes compassionate and they would never cause pain to another being. They find contentment with life and their jeolousy of others disappears as do their evil intentions. Their only thirst is God and so they do not heed to hedonistic desires. Bit by bit as they fall deeper into God's love, their sinful intentions vanish. In this way they become pure. They lose the desire to indulge in acts of lust, anger, greed, ego and attachment. Only the love of God can fill the emptiness which tortures us humans, the emptiness which causes us to find pleasure in sin. Once that emptiness is filled then love for mankind wells up and the desire to sin is eradicated. It is God's very nature to purify even the most sinful of people. The Naam can heal even the most broken of hearts and it can soften the most stonehearted sinners. It is only by loving the Naam, by loving God, that our bodies can be purified of sin. Punnee Paapee Aaakhnu Naahi.. Virtuous and sinful are not just mere words Kari Kari Karnaa Likhi Lai Jaahu.. (but in reality) whichever deeds you do, those values will be embedded inside your being and go with you. Word By Word ਪੁੰਨੀ -Punnee -Virtuous ਪਾਪੀ -Paapee -Sinful (opposite of virtuous) ਆਖਣੁ -Aaakhnu -Name, word ਨਾਹਿ-Naahi-negation word, is not ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਣਾ- Kari Kari Karnaa -The karam, the actions which are done by one’s own self. Whichever karam, actions, one commits ਲਿਖਿ -Likhi - after writing, after writing such a lekha (written account),after writing a written account of those types of values, after engraving those types of values in one's own mind ਲੈ ਜਾਹੁ- Lai Jaahu- to take with, you will take them with you note: It is important to attentively discuss the word 'ਆਖਣੁ' (Aaakhnu). In Japji Sahib this word comes in the lines written below (1) Punnee Paapee Aaakhnu Naahi. (Paurhee 20). (2)Naanak Aaakhni Sabhu Ko Aaakhai, Eik Doo Eiku Siaaanaa (Paurhee 21). (3) Jay Ko Khaaeiku Aaakhni Paaei. (Paurhee 25). (5) Aaakhni Jor chupai Nhi Jor. (Pauree 33) To more clearly understand the meaning of the word Aaakhnu here are some more examples below (6) Aaakhnu Aaakhi Naa Rajiaaa, Sunni Na Rjay Kann .2.1 (Maanjh Kee Waar). (7) Aaakhni Aaakhhi Kaytrhay, Gur Bin Boojh Na Hoei.3.13. (Maanjh Kee Waar). From these above examples it is clear that the word "ਆਖਣੁ(Aakhnu) is a noun and 'ਆਖਣਿ' (Aakhni) is a verb. The noun Aaakhnu means Naam, sayings, words said by mouth, just like examples 1 and 6. In examples 2,3,4,5,and 7 Aaakhni (ਆਖਣਿ) is a verb. In a nutshell Oh Naanak! "Virtuous" and "sinful" are not just names (meaning they are not only sayings (just words) but in reality whatever ever deeds you do, those values will be embedded within you and you will take those values with you. A little Deeper Every action one commits contributes to the formation of habits. These habits go with us and they make who we are. Sinful and virtuous are not mere words. One becomes sinful or virtuous based on each action they do. Everything we do has a consequence and humans become the actions that they commit. These actions are engraved in our souls and they go with us to the next world, they are part of our account. Aaapay Beeji Aaapay Hee Khaahu.. Whatever we plant, we must ourselves eat . Naanak Hukmee Aaawhu Jaahu..20.. O Nanak, It is within the divine hukam, that in accordance to what we plant (our deeds) we shall continue to come and go in reincarnation. Word By Word ਆਪੇ -Aaapay - by one’s self ਬੀਜਿ -Beeji -to plant a seed ਆਪੇ -Aaapay by one’s self, ਹੀ -Hee -in this case this means will ਖਾਹੁ- Khaahu-to eat ਨਾਨਕ- Naanak ਹੁਕਮੀ -Hukmee - Within the Hukam of the Timeless Being ਆਵਹੁ -Aaawhu - will come ਜਾਹੁ-Jaahu-will go ਆਵਹੁ ਜਾਹੁ -Aaawhu Jaahu- will come and go, will be born and die, will be stuck in the cycle of birth and death In a nutshell Whatever you plant, that is what you will eat. In accordance with what you have planted, within the Hukam of God, you will be subject to the rounds of transmigration (coming and going) .20. *Meaning= Those beings who care about maya get stuck in vikaars (the five thieves meaning lust, anger, greed, attachment, ego) and their thinking becomes dirty. This dirt keeps the beings away from the pure Lord and that being remains in pain. Meditating on the Naam is the only means of cleaning this dirt from the intellect (mind). So Meditating on the Lord is for getting rid of the dirt from the vikaars (lust anger greed ego attachment) and for making the mind meet with the Lord but it does not give a being strength to find the Lord's limits.20. *Note- The first Paurhee contained the line Hukmi Rajaaee Chlnaa Naanak Likhiaaa Naali..1.. Satguru Nanak Dev Ji It is by walking with the Hukam of God In the second pauri this line is discussed with the words Hukmee Outamu Neechu Hukami Likhi Dukhu Sukhu Paaeeahi. In the Hukam Humans are good and bad (do good and bad) By the Hukam, It is written whether humans receive pain or pleasure depending on their good and bad deeds Now, in this Paurhee the above lines are given close attention and made clear. All of Creation is acting in accordance with special rules from the Timeless Being. These rules are referred to as the Hukam by SatGuru ji. These rules are that whichever deeds a human does, a human eats the fruit of those deed (receives the consequences). Whichever good or bad values they are formed inside their own dhur (axis, origin) it is according to those that they pass through the cycles of death and rebirth, and, it is by walking in the will of the Timeless Being that their births are made fruitful. A little Deeper So here we learn one aspect of hukam. It is God's law that every action has a consequence. It is a law of science that every stimulus has a reaction and every reaction has a stimulus. This is a truth of the universe. We humans think we are free but in reality we are slaves to the five thieves (lust, anger, greed, ego and attachment). Sometimes love (from attachment), other times hatred, other times greed, other times ego and at times our anger controls our actions. These actions bear many consequences and as long as we are stuck in this web we go through the cycle of death and rebirth. There is only one way to rise above this. It is when one surrenders to the hukam that they are free from the veil of falsehood. Surrendering to God makes a human free from the bonds of the five evils. Surrendering to the Hukam which is Gods form, Indeed God himself is the hukam present in every single thing controlling every aspect of the universe, and surrendering to this amazing form of God makes a human truly liberated. This is the best way. One does not get affected by pain and pleasure and they realize God everywhere ! Also, so far in the last few pauris we have learned that God and God's creation is infinite. No great saint can find the limits. Here Guru ji tells us that although meditation on the Naam gives a person great strong blessings, it still does not make them able to tell the limits of creation.
  24. Opinions please: I'm not sure about this one? Alternatively, are they talking about the lack of love towards general society (ਖਲਕ ਤੇ ਖਲਕਤ??) on part of the hermits (ਤਿਆਗੀ)???
  25. Found it! ਵਲਵਲਾ means excitement, impulse, sudden strong feeling, idea, thought, aspiration
